Good Ol' Platformer- With Beavers!

Archive: 8 posts

Hi everyone. I've published another level, this time around a platformer. That's all I really ever make, isn't it? Anyhow, it's a pond themed platformer with beavers scattered about. That pretty much explains it. I was kind of feeling that LBP1 vibe when I actually took the level for a test drive, but not so much that it feels outdated. It's just a plain old platformer, no fancy gimmicks and such. I encourage you to try it, and I hope you like it!
Oh, and I'd prefer if you'd provide a DIRECT Lbp.me link with your post if you want an F4F. If there's already one in your sig or something, just let me know.
Here are some pictures:

And I'm having that problem where the badge doesn't show up again, so until it's fixed, here's the link to the level.

Very nice level! I really liked playing it. It looks nice, and it's usually clear where you have to go next.
On the place where you go down between the giant spinning saw blades i managed to get the chain chuck though I uploaded a pic of where it happened, you might wanna fix that.

OK, here's my promised feedback. I'm typing this as I play the level, so hopefully you can pinpoint areas I'm talking about, plus, I'm a forgetful fellow. Please excuse any typos that will no doubt occur

Opening is lovely, I have a thing for the camera being all zoomed out, gives a lovely sense of scale. The sign is a tad unreadable though, but it's not like it's hugely important. Onto the next checkpoint, now it's all zoomed in. Again, very cool. Nice bit of platforming to get you started (though I died xD). Stairs are cool. Compared to what I've seen so far, the fire wall doesn't look particularly impressive, perhaps decorate it a bit? Though I can see your point (fire wouldn't be decorated, after all). That whole bit was very fast=paced and impressive, took me by surprise. Up the stairs that move back and forth, that was cool.

Some more fire, and now I'm in a building of sorts. Again, zoomed in and very cool. I jumped on the bouncepad and hit my head on the ceiling, then came crashing down to my death. Maybe make the hole a little bigger? Onto the stones in the water, that's another thing I love, when people get decorations and make them solid and incorporate them into the gameplay, and this is a great example.

Grab switch is visible as you descend down the saws, intentional? When swinging across the saws (from left to right), the sponge I was holding onto acted a bit strangely and kept getting stuck on the ceiling. Big windmill is lovely. Layer changing into the rock was a bit dodgy, I couldn't see there was a little raised edge so the game kept pushing me forwards. Maybe lower this edge slightly? In a big, open field, with the camera zoomed out, really highlights your lovely wind effect with the leaves. Pull a switch, and there's the scoreboard!

Overall, not a bad level. It was a bit short and not hugely challenging, but the graphics are lovely and it's genuinely fun to play, if troubled by a few very minor setbacks. Plus, beavers. A happy face from me

In return, would you mind F4Fing my level Explosive Adventures 2 (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=69903-Explosive-Adventures-2-Another-Bomb-Based-Platformer&p=999216#post999216)? Thanks.

Alrighty, I'm loading it up now... Okay, I'm entering... Wow, scenery looks nice.. A nice happy environment - OH LOOK A BEAVER -- anyways.. The camera for the infinite checkpoint was unneccessary in my opinion. Alright, the first obstacle. Looks like a simple jump.. WHAT? They move down! .. Maybe a little hint at what to do would help, maybe a sign to show that the platforms move down when you touch them. The stairs were neat. The checkpoint is misleading, I don't know where to go. But the camera directed me to the right, I guess that works. I burned my buttocks jumping to the sponges, maybe having the platform go over the fire? ... Okay, what do I do now? I had to risk my life to find the in/out platforms that I didn't even know were there. I was just jumping to see if something happened. A sign would have been nice. The bouncepad/conveyor thingy was neat, I liked that. Those stairs that came in and out of the wall were neat as well. The next little bit of tiny platforming was okay I guess, although I died on the bouncepad that was supposed to launch me through the floor. Everything else is okay up until the saws. The sponge has a visible grab sensor by the way. If it is ment to be there then it really isn't needed bacause the sponge is out in the open, and it is quite obvious it's going to move down when you grab it. The sponge that you hold onto and glide above the saws got stuck, and sent me flying into the saws. Running all the way across that patch of grass, just to pull a switch and have to run back to the scoreboard seemed a bit pointless to me.

Overall: 7/10

Scenery looked nice and enjoyable.
Gameplay kept me entertained, although it was confusing and didn't work at times.

Since this is F4F, can you check out my level Rundown? It is 1 player only. Here is the LBP.me Link: http://lbp.me/v/-sd0sg
Here is the LBPC thread link if you want to post the review there: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=69929-Rundown-1-Player-Only

I actually really enjoyed the level! Although some parts I couldn't figure out until AFTER I died, it was still fun in the end. The last stretch where you push the switch to open up the scoreboard, if that could be just a bit more fun, then I'd say I have no problem with the level! Good job. ^^2012-04-25 02:49:00

Sorry for the extremely late responses, I haven't been able to get on lately. Here it goes nonetheless!

No, thank you. I appreciate the detail you put into it even though you typed it up as you played. I'll try my best to fix any bugs, and yes, any visible logic is intentional, just in case the player doesn't know what to do (if it isn't obvious already). I'm glad the scenery appeals to most players, I was hoping for that. It's kind of a laid-back level, I know. I just felt that way when building it. :hero:

Thanks too! Thank you also for the detail, I'll try to fix what I feel I need to. However, although I agree with most of your helpful suggestions, I don't want to make everything TOO obvious so that it's some cakewalk. I don't want to send the impression that one would be too stupid to figure out the obvious or explore to find it. I mean, not everything needs a marker, some vague areas are needed to add some sort of challenge in a particularly easy level like mine. I'm also not surprised that you saw the switch-pulling unnecessary, in fact, I hate it when people do that kind of switch-yanking fancy crud, but just be glad that I didn't use a three-hour movie camera to point out that a block changed color some three inches away from me. I did feel guilty using it though. I have a reason. The thermometer hates sticker panels for some reason, and it decided to fill up at that area, so I decided to keep it short, sweet, and simple. That, and the fact that I'm REALLY impatient when I'm so close to publishing! It's a bad habit that I need to rid myself of.
Thanks to everyone else for their feedback, too. I just don't want to fill up the whole page with a single reply. Thanks for playing my level!
