The truth behind the "happened" censorship

Archive: 35 posts

I found out why words such as "happened," "computer," "analog," and "Uranus" have been censored once you type it. I typed down random letters before and after a bad word, and the whole thing shows up censored. I know you want those words uncensored, but the reason why the whole words are censored is because they contain substrings of letters that can't pass the swear filter. To stop the censorship of these words, they should take out the swear filter.

I know that update 1.12 has upset you, as well as the broken creatinator from update 1.10, the lethal sackboy glitch, copying, and advertising, but this is another issue going on. People are tired of this censorship.

Even if you didn't know this I'm surprised you didn't know the truth behind Uranus already. No pun intended.2012-04-20 02:14:00

On Wikipedia, I read an article with all these scenarios that had a similar story to this. This is what we call The Scunthorpe Problem. The definition: It's when swear filters go out of control. I know Wikipedia isn't always reliable, but I think the whole story on this article is true. In many cases, many innocent words have been blocked out because of a substring. I'm sure you know all about "Uranus" and "Analog," but "Happened" and "Computer" contain a substring that is considered obscene in another language.2012-04-20 02:25:00

Why, I've never seen so much gratuitous profanity in one post! Your mother should wash your mouth out with soap!

I am 19 years old, and those aren't bad words.

@warlord_evil: I can't belive how bad the censorship is. I know it's rediculous. Maybe in update 1.13, they should remove the swear filter. It's better to see kids swear than it is to limit freedom of speech.

That's it you made me made I am gonna say a bad bad word...
COMPUTER!
There I said it! You made it HAPPEN!
Nooo! I said a bad one again!

But on a side note, I worked at a certain web company that is a bit super big and they had a program in their password system that you could not use any word that was in any language in any part of your password...I grew to hate certain Languages that had words like "le" or "ka".

I kinda get why the swear filter jumps onto these words, but I never understood why the word "entering" is also blocked out 2012-04-20 08:27:00

"Tering" is Dutch slang for a word starting with S and ending with hit. It's used in the context of "dang!" rather than referring to what comes out of one's posterior when one sits on the latrine.

"Tering" is dutch slang for tuberculosis. The dutch have a tendency to throw diseases around as swear words. When it comes to the S and the F words, they are pretty popular, too, untranslated.

Aye, that's what I meant. I wasn't offering a literal translation, but a colloquial one. Where the Dutch would say tering, we would say shi...

For added fun, try typing the word Assassin into a PSN chat window. It should come up as ***assin. I've yet to understand the logic behind that. 2012-04-20 14:54:00

I find this censorship awfully annoying when I type a review and I have to go all the way back just to add a comma or something to make it invisible to the censors. However, LBP is a friendly game, and I think it would be better if we'd left it there. I mean, the problem is easily fixed by altering the text a bit. Even simple as adding a period between letters.
What I still don't get though is why English words are censored for bad words in completely unrelated languages.

My guess? Lazy coders on a tight schedule with minimal budget. It's the only explanation for having such a simple and dumb system that anyone could code in half a day, without anyone having thought of implementing a just-as-simple list of words to ignore.

Me: "What happened?"
Friend: "Censored."
Me: "What hap.pened?"
Friend: "Censored."
Me: "What did just occur?"
Friend: "Why are you talking like it's the middle ages?"

I swear to god.

Three years too late?

How hard would a white list be to implement? I mean they could allow words to be typed but only if the whole word is present, then everyone would be happy.

What's weird is that I typed in "pen", but it wasn't censored. Nothing happened.
Or, "nothing ********".

Then I should talk to them to remove the swear filter. It's annoying. "Happened" has a substring of a bad word in Spanish. That's rediculous. Banning words just because of one substring that is considered obscene from another language, that's messed up.

Its because it filters out "pene", which I think is the spanish word for what it sounds like. I came here to post the thread that warlord posted, but alas, warlord posted it.

I hope that mm considers this in 1.13. Although it does force you to look up bigger or even better words that might make your level sound more mature.2012-04-23 02:07:00

If they removed the frowny face for being upsetting... there is not a single chance they will ever remove the swear filter... and personally I can easily get round 'happened' if it means I don't run into a bunch of people constantly swearing... this is lbp after all.

people were crying out for full PSN integration across all the regions so it's not surprising that certain words get censored, even though in our language they are innocuous... but i do agree that words within words should just be left alone2012-04-24 13:24:00

Because I often sit there not being able to think of anything to get around 'happened', here's what thesaurus.com says:

appear, arise, arrive, be found, become a fact, become known, become of, befall, betide, bump, chance, come about, come after, come into being, come into existence, come off, crop up, develop, down, ensue, eventuate, fall, follow, go on, hit, issue, light, luck, materialize, meet, pass, present itself, proceed, recur, result, shake, smoke*, spring, stumble, stumble upon, supervene, take effect, take place, transpire, turn out, turn up, what goes

Some of them seem fine, others (bump?) seem ridiculous. So yay.

Your post reminds me of all these cases of censorship that came from political accuracy. I understand "Analog", because of the first four letters, but "happened"? It only contains a substring that's not in our language. This censorship, as well as the Scunthorpe Problem, isn't the only case of politically accurate censorship. I know some worse cases:

1. New York City has banned words like "birthday", "dinosaur", and "Halloween" in schools. You can't say them anywhere, because the city digs deeper into the religious meanings (i.e. "dinosaur" is a reference to evolution). They ban the words to make sure nobody is offended. 1st Amendment please!

2. Last decade, nursery rhymes and fairy tales have been altered (not fractured) to make things less offensive. The nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty had the ending changed so kids won't get scared. It's now "couldn't make Humpty happy again" instead of "couldn't fix Humpty together again". The fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is now just Snow White. The rest of the title was removed so they can't offend people with height problems.

3. When TDI came out on CN, the channel had to carry out edits all over the show to make it less inappropriate. The worst part - even the mildest words such as "stupid" and "shut up" are censored and replaced with "lame-o" and "shut it". It's a long story, but it's true. "Lame-o" is the new "stupid", "shut it" is the new "shut up", and references to being fat have been removed.

I know this is all off-topic, but whatever the "happened" censorship was is a case of political accuracy. Same with the three I just mentioned. If we don't want to see this happen anymore, then don't go too deep into the vocabulary. This means you too, Mm.

Okay that is the most ridiculous thing ever.

Do they ban milk in the cafeteria so they don't offend Lactose Intolerants?

Do they ban the use of bandages in the school because some tribes may believe in showing off a wound?

Do they ban other clearly demonstrable topics like the colour of the sky?

No.

Source?

Last time I checked the existence of Dinosaurs wasn't a religious matter and I don't believe the thing about Snow White.. What next?

Ba Ba Rainbow Sheep have you any wool
Yes sir or madam, yes sir or madam 3 bags full
Etc

The word "dinosaur" contains a reference to evolution, which makes no sense at all. It does not make a reference to evolution; it just makes a reference to life from the past. People made studies of life from the past references to evolution. There was some religious controversy on evolution in the 20's, so that makes evolution a problem. I know New York is not about creationism, but banning words that contain a reference to evolution? And what's with the deal about dinosaurs and evolution? There's no correlation.

Thanks for remind me of the "Baa Baa Black Sheep" nursery rhyme. The "Snow White" incident I talked about was real. Maybe it's not the movie, but the book's title was changed.
