Sony Working On LittleBigPlanet MMO?

Archive: 18 posts

maybe... just maybe i've said it several times already: LBPMinecraft

A new job listing on the LittleBigPlanet website suggests that Sony are at least looking into, if not already working on, an MMO based in the LBP universe.

So there I was, casually reading the latest of the regular LittleBigPlanet community updates on the PlayStation Blog when I noticed that Media Molecule (and the rest of the LBP studios – Double Eleven, United Front etc.) are hiring. Reading through the listings, which include gameplay, tools and network positions – there’s not too much exciting, until you get to the page for Lead Community Manager.

Under the ‘requirements’ section is “a strong knowledge and passion for games, ideally to include social gaming and MMO’s”. Now sure, the LBP franchise is easily the most family-friendly in Sony’s stable (sorry Kratos!), but the existing entries are pretty solid and challenging platformers, not what you’d describe as “social games”. And, while the series is pretty well-known for its online capabilities, you wouldn’t really describe any of the games so far as MMOs.

Now of course this could just be Sony looking for someone with a lot of experience dealing with creative and commited communities like the one that surrounds Media Molecule’s baby, but given the company’s recent experiments with console MMOs (in the form of Free Realms, DCUO and Home), and testing of the free-to-play waters (MAG, Killzone 3), it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to suggest some kind of ‘LittleBigUniverse’ project is brewing somewhere at the Worldwide Studios. Looking for a community manager with MMO experience now suggests that such a project might already be pretty far along.

Roll on E3…

LBP2 is pretty much the most social game I've ever played... sooooo yeah...

I'm sure there will be ton of posts here detailing why this is a bad idea, but I'm pretty sure everyone posting would buy it.

Count me in! Why simply go 3D when you can go MMO?

don't forget people, this is only speculation from this site. the reason i posted it is because i've had this feeling for a good two years now. all devs like to push themselves and every game requires an improvement over the last. couple this with the chatter over the years about how HOME would have been better using the LBP universe, the fact that Sony saw fit to buy MM and the huge success of Minecraft, to me it is almost inevitable that it WOULD happen at some point. these job listings have only given weight to my own speculation.

now if you could enter this MMO and not only build the environments but travel with new friends to levels they've made with other LBP games and you have something so compelling that any company would bend over backwards to make it happen

It sounds like a creazy idea :> but this not hinting that its anything involved with LBP, Lead Community Menager is overall corporation PR job not specific game, also note that StevenI position is named Community Cordinator (not Menager) and his job is LBP specific (i think)2012-04-17 02:35:00

Yeah, I dont really see how you can turn LBP into an MMO and still call it LittleBigPlanet. I feel like using a few of LBP and minecrafts characteristics just so that you can call the game LBPminecraft would be a big marketing scheme; throw in a few similarities so that you can name the game after them and watch as people buy it because it has minecraft or LittleBigPlanet in the title. The recent game, Skylanders Spyros Adventure or whatever, was not even close to anything spyro had ever seen before. And yet they threw in a purple dragon, named him spyro, and how many people do you think bought that game because it had "spyro" in it? A game called Call of Halocraft would probably be a best seller.
So this LBP minecraft game may just be some new weird game, but still be very slightly similar to either of the two games.

You are forgetting I think, that MM have announced they're working on a new ip. Theres still a high chance of a play create share title being their next ip, and based on that statment, I'd guess a large community is what they're aiming for, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for an lbp mmo.
On a side note, wouldn't lbp be classed as an mmo or social game anywho? it seems to be prety massive, has multiplayer and is online sooo.......
and where did all this lbp minecraft talk come from? it also doesn't mention minecraft.

LBPMinecraft is just a quick way of expressing a concept. it's not meant to be accurate.2012-04-18 12:33:00

If you guys didn't know... On PlayStation's facebook page it says something is coming on 4/19/12. Also there is supposedly a NEW PS Exclusive being announced on May 2nd.

Not saying it's LBP related, but that would be pretty cool if we got THREE LBP games this year.

I think this theory is way too spectical to even think about it. They were just hiring community manager that would know something about MMO games. Mostly it probably means knowing well how community works, since LBP has quite big and connected community. Other jobs Mm was hiring didn't have anything to do with MMOs

Also I would really hope that Mm would start to work with something else than LBP. Usually companies are scared to go on new ice when it is little fragile but usually it really is best solution. Think whole new game series that would be as good as LBP

Just discovered, it seems they are doing a GoW prequel (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/04/18/god-of-war-ascension-revealed.aspx).

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

Although I've never actually played a GOW game... am I missing out?
