Possible save system feature with passwords.

I'm not sure if this thread belongs here or not, since this will probably be more of a discussion than me asking for help, but I'll post this here for now.

Alright so, with LBPvita coming out, we know that it has a new Memoriser tool that lets you save your progress in a level. Assuming this doesn't come to lbp2, we cant allow players to save in our levels, unless we find unique ways to do it.

We know its possible to carry over things to other levels via level links and the scoring system, and that we can tell if a player has played a level before by giving him a sticker at the end of the level and allowing him to use it, but what about some kind of password that stores data?

There are plenty of lockboxes out there, that only allow the player to access it if the correct code is entered, but what if you could apply this to some type of save system for your level. For example, imagine if you were making a level that is an almost exact replica of the first ever Metroid game. Lets say someone plays through your level and they get the morph ball, and the missile and then they stop playing. However they will first use the "quit" function of your game. The level will then tell the player that their password is "Missile Ball"(I know its lame), since they got the missiles and the morph ball. If the player starts the level again, he can enter this password to start the level with the morph ball and missiles. I think this could be possible with plenty of tags.

You could have plenty of passwords for different things in your level. You could then also have hidden passwords that are usable as cheat codes in your level, if you want to of course. Does anyone think kind of thing could work? Would it be too thermo intensive? Would it be worth it?

P.S. I know you can already do something like this with stickers, but I like thinking of other ways to do things.

I actually worked on a megaman X style password system before my old ps3 went ylod.. I think it would also be possible to make a matrix password system like in the earlier mega man games.

and here's a video of a guy explaining the binary logic behind the original megaman password system which could easily be recreated in LBP2... the video is 3 parts and about 45 minutes, so set some time aside if you're gonna watch all the way through.

You could use a system like this to transmit more complex data between levels or upon restart of a level the player was already playing. The problem is, how do you make sure the player writes down their password, enters it correctly, and takes the time to enter it and deal with that extra hassle.

I think this would be better in the "Ideas and "Projects section, but, whatever .. I think this is a cool idea. And, forget the fancy pants binary codes and whatnot. Instead of using Words as passwords, use 4 digit numbers. It would make the logic much simpler. But, it would also work with words. The logic would be the same as a lockbox, but switch the prize for the action that the password allows.2012-04-19 01:16:00
