Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2

Archive: 42 posts

One of, IMO, the most underrated games this generation was Castlevania. While it may not have been akin to other entries in the series, I felt that it was a good action game with a good plot. The only real complaint I have is the narration; I mean, how can you make people sick of Patrick Stewart? O_o

Regardless, it's been about a year and a half since the original was released, and I'm thinking the sequel will be announced at E3. This isn't just me speculating (ok, it is), but this tweet helps my case:

https://twitter.com/#!/CastlevaniaLOS/status/186788518977220608

Plus a bunch of other things like resumes and logic say that they're making a sequel. So yeah, for now, let's speculate on what it could be!

Personally, I want it to be in the thousand years between the first game and the epilogue cutscene. I'm thinking it'd star Gabriel/Dracula over the course of the millennium, each chapter being a different point in time. So rather then one single adventure, it would tell various aspects of his rise and fall as Dracula. Then the third game could take place after the ending cutscene in 1.

So yeah, anyone else have any thoughts?

I liked the first one despite being very derivative. I wouldn't mind a sequel.2012-04-15 07:28:00

I think the reason why it is so underrated is because people know that the only 'good' Castlevania game was Castlevania 1.

Castlevania 1: New game, new gameplay, fresh IP, and awesome color schemes in levels; game was actually hard and required problem solving skills.
Castlevania 2: Same game, same gameplay; terrible color pallet, one of the biggest flops in history of a game attempting to become an RPG; FARMING, FARMING EVERYWHERE
Castlevania 3: Don't know about this one. A lot of people tell me not to try it. So, you got me there.
Castlevania 4: XBAWKS HUGE CHARACTER; ugly to look at; whip is OP; main character looks like a girl (is she a girl?), so all the nostalgia from Castlevania 1 worth off

That's about it from my experience with the series. I may have to Google search the third game and emulate it on my comp to see if it's good or not. As for the other Castlevania games, I abandoned the series after 4. Personally, I hated 4. I hated it so much, I stop playing like 1/4 in the game, regretted ever buying it, and then pretended as though I never played it. It was that horrible.

I own lords of shadows but I've only played symphony of the night. That was one hell of a game. Still is, I played it just a few years ago.2012-04-15 12:15:00

Looks like someone saw Egoraptor's videos!

Saw them, played the games myself, locked away the abominations, then cried myself to sleep in a corner.

Honestly, egoraptor may have some good points, but he lost me at Castlevania 4. How can anybody like that piece of crap? It felt nothing like a Castlevania game, whip was the only thing you should consider using, and the whole game looked ugly to look at. I don't even want to begin with the main character at all (LET'S MAKE HIM HUGE AND RESEMBLE A GIRL, THAT'LL APPEAL TO GAMERS).

Like I said, Castlevania 1 was my only favorite one. If I had to go with a second one, it'll be Castlevania 2, but ONLY because it resembled a lot like the first. That and 'What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse'. Man I loved seeing that quote.

Eh, get over it. Castlevania 1 may be the only "pure" Castlevania but it wasn't the only good one. Super Castlevania 4 wasn't as challenging but it was entertaining. Symphony f the Night and its sequels were fun. Lords of Shadow might as well have been another franchise but it was an excellent adventure game. Things change with time, just roll with it.2012-04-16 07:29:00

Loved Lords Of Shadow.
I would like a sequel with multiple old characters like Simon Belmont and Alucard...a story that pans through centuries.

If they fix the writing, it'll be my game of the gen.

So it seems like there will also be a 3DS game called Mirror of Fate using the old Metroidvania style, as well as the 3DS cameras for puzzle solving...

But it seems like it will be made by Mercury Steam, aka the guys making Lords of Shadow. Hm. I wonder if it would tie into the new mythos... kinda hope so. I'd love for the new timeline to be explored, because while I love some aspects of Castlevania's story, it just wasn't planned enough :/

I hope they don't ask Patrick Stewart to return. He may be an awesome actor, but in LoS he was just awful. As a narrator he was too melodramatic, as a character he was emotionless. And when he read out the chapter intro he dragged it out so much I started reading the text as fast as I could to skip it as soon as possible.2012-05-25 08:35:00

Someone from the press apparently got to see the trailer. Take this summary with a grain of salt, but my GOD, it better be true.

White text cause possible spoilers, so highlight.

The protagonist is a blond Simon Belmont, who was left an orphan by a hooded man, who turned out to be Zobek. Then it cuts to 24 years later and his village get's attacked by monsters and he finds a whip in a stable and wards off the invading monsters. A voice over say's that the attacks happen every day and they get worse every time. Then it cuts to a woman in the woods during the daytime, she finds a tome beneath some rocks and inside the tome shows images of what happened in the previous game and on the last page it shows a child with the text "Simon Belmont, son of the dragon." The back of the book lies a recess with the whip inside and beneath it says "Vampire Killer." The woman say's "The time has come." and closes the book and leaves. Then gameplay is show with Simon Fighting in the forest, a cave and a bossfight with Slogra and Gaibon in a cathedral. Then it shows Simon outside of the gates of Dracul's castle and then cuts to Dracul(Gabriel) on his throne. Then a fully orchestrated version of Vampire Killer plays and end with "Castlevania: The Dragon Returns---2013.

Long story short, it's a great adventure game but kind of derivative (especially with the titan fights that are basically ripped right off Shadow of The Colossus). Expect it to be like a mix of current adventure games. There's almost nothing "Castlevania" about it so they could've just as well given it another title.

If you're into this kind of game, you'll love it for sure. It has lots of action, a great variety of sceneries, tons of bosses and enemy types, great art, imaginative puzzzles and its very long for this kind of game. A God of War game lasts like 7-9 hours but this one will last you more than 15.

Mercury Steam is making a Metroidvania for the 3DS set in the new universe starring Trevor. No word on the story beyond that.

I hope this isn't the only sequel... it'd be cool if they expand this new universe some, but I want a real sequel too. They can't be stupid enough to release the sequel to a Ps3/360 game on the 3DS... right?

Sounds like a lot of fun. I did use to have the old Castlevania 64 which i liked back then so far this looks similar only much more advanced obviously.
15 hours, sounds good, i do like a game that lasts.

Is the DLC for LOS 1 worth it? Its on sale this week but I still feel ?10 for 2 chapters is a bit expensive when the whole 12 chapter game only cost ?18.2012-05-30 17:04:00

In my opinion it's not. The first DLC is average, but the second one is really underwhelming and could as well have been part of the first. I think a fair price would be 5€ for both of them, otherwise there's much better stuff you can buy in the Store for 10 bucks.

So, will we play as Gabriel/Dracula, or Alucard?

Hm...

And personally I'd like it to be a bit of a 3D Metroidvania. But anyway, I guess we'll see soon enough

Apparently it was from some old movie where Alucard was Dracula's disguise. So yea, lazy day.

Anyway, I was reading that maybe that guy was the "Good" half of Gabriel's soul, like the Lords of Shadow who were the evil parts while the good parts went to heaven. Maybe that was what Mercury Steam's idea for who Alucard would be.

Seeing as how now the Belmonts are the descendents of Dracula and all.

I don't get it, are we playing as Gabriel or Alucard? Gabriel has undoubtedly become the villain, but the trailer music makes him seem kind of heroic.2012-06-03 10:50:00

It's more than that. It's "Dracula" spelled backwards.

And even more then that. According to the original Symphony of the Night manual, he chose the alias because it represented the fact that he was directly ideologically opposed to Dracula.
