Using The Music Sequencer

Archive: 2 posts

I posted this over on the Planetarium: apparently it's useful according one guy. That's a change

This guide has 2 sections:

- Turning sheet music into a tune on the sequencer
- Composing Sequencer songs from scratch.

Skip down to the section you want, or be a swat and read it all. Your choice.

[INTRO]

The Music Sequencer.

A valuable asset to your level. A good music track can sometimes be the difference inbetween a successful and unknown level.

The thing is, it's kinda hard to use if you don't know how. So learn!

Well, if you don't wanna read, just ask someone else to do it for you. There are some top notch music makers out there: weirdybeardy, hilightnotes, Stunkel, etc.

But personally, I feel much better when I make everything myself. It feels like if it does well, it was my idea (but equally, if it fails, it was my fault).

A few mere days ago, I was pondering over how to use the Music Sequencer.

To be honest, it helps if you play in instrument in real life (preferably a piano), or if you can read music. There's a piano right next to my PS3: now I'll tell you why that helps.

Turning sheet music into a tune in the Sequencer

Before, I could easily turn sheet music into a tune in the Sequencer, because I can play it on the piano, and in the music sequencer, next to where you plot your notes, there's a piano (it's magic!).

Now, there's line's across it. By default it says "C1, C2, C3, C4, etc. up to C8" up the side. All of the lines are horizontal. I generally find that, take C4 for example, if I plot a note on that line in the sequencer, then count 4 C's up the piano from the bottom, that note is the same as the one on the sequencer. Here is an annoying song to help you find C if you can't:

From there, you just see which keys you push on the piano to play the song and put them in the exact same place on the piano in the Music Sequencer.

Simple! Then just get the timing right. The Music boxes (things you put on the sequencer) are split up into 4 bars by default. They last a second each. On the sheet music, (here is where you need general music knowledge) if the piece in 4/4 time, then that means that:

- There are 4 beats in a bar
- A crotchet gets one beat

If the vertical bars in the sequencer are 4 beats each, then a crotchet is a quarter of the bar, a quaver is an eighth of the bar, a minum is half a bar, and a semibreve is a full bar.

Composing Tunes from scratch

This is the bit you care about. It helps if you know Major/Minor scales and their arpeggios on an instrument though.

Before I start, remember that:

---* Your tune does not need to have drums in it at any point *---

They are useful in some tunes, it really depends on what you have in mind.

The first tip:

- Start off with a scale (major or minor) and an arpeggio. In a scale with one octave, the arpeggio consists of 7 notes.

Take C Major for example. With one octave, on the piano, it goes:

C D E F G A B (top )C B A G F E D C (end) then the arpeggio:

C E A (top)C A E C (end)

I use apreggios to start my song now. Use those notes to make a simple tune or melody that is catchy or sounds good.

The fifth note also goes well, so in the C major scale that would be G (I think that's the tonic? I've forgotten).

Here's an example of a melody:

Bottom C - G - A - Top C - A - G (keep repeating)

If you repeat it 3 times and change it on the 4th, that makes a nice tune. It helps if before you repeat it you make sure there are only 4 beats.

Better example:

(v = bottom)

v C - G - A - v C
v C - G - A - v C
v C - G - A - v C
v C - G - A - B
(repeat)

Of course, you can use any scale you like and any notes. As you get better you can just come up with catchy melodies using any notes on the spot.

Try not to get inspired entirely by other songs, because I always end up just remaking them but with Worm instead of Piano, or claps over it.

Also, if you are making it to go over platforming in your level, make the music go with it. If it is scary or sad, make it minor. If it is fun or happy, make it major.

I met someone called Donor the other day and he said he makes his songs by starting with a face or a letter on the sequencer.
An example could be: (imagine the dots on the sequencer)

:.:.

Now, remembering that you DON'T NEED DRUMS, you might want to make a bassline using a certain pattern, like the same note 3 times and then 1 note higher for the 4th note, then repeat it in various positions on the sequencer. Woodpecker is a nice one for happy songs, and then maybe Badger, Worm or something bassy for sad songs.

Sometimes, if you are stuck, I find it helps to try only using Music Boxes on your sequencer that are the same colour. For example, the instruments with strings (like violin, guitar, etc.) are all red.

To conclude:

- Don't always use drums
- Try to start off with an arpeggio or using a scale. After that, ideas come flowing through and everything slots neatly into place.
- If you're stuck, try different instruments and ones of the same colour Music Boxes
- You'll develop over time

- Get someone else to do it for you

Thank you for reading, I hope I helped!
