The Tales of Series Thread

Archive: 32 posts

Ok, well, I suppose I should say this right away:

I am a huge of Tales Series fan.

Well, maybe huge is the wrong word, considering I've only ever actually played two main games and a spin off, but those two main games are among the best games I've ever played.

Yes... Definitally up there on my top five ever. I just love them so much... :/

The two "real" games I've played are Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss, and the spin off is Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of the New World. I would play more, but...

Anyway, Tales of Symphonia is for the Gamecube, and while it's very cheesy, it's probably the best in the series. It's kinda the Final Fantasy 7 in that it's the most widely played and liked game in the series (part of which may be because it was pretty much the only RPG on the Gamecube, so no competition- but also because it was epic). It started off really cliched, but then once you finally got to the Tower of Salvation, it really picks up... and becomes one of the most awesome games of all time. I just... :/. I loves it so much.

And Tales of the Abyss is also cool, and I like it almost as much, though that may just be because I like clone stories, so... yeah :/.

Tales of Symphonia 2 is... kinda disapointing since it doesn't really continue any of the stories from the first game, but is ok in it's own right.

And there are other games I've never gotten to paly, but I've read the stories to them... >_<

Anywho, if anyone here has a Gamecube or a wii, and has never played Tales of Symphonia... then PLAY IT, HEATHEN. >_< It's... just awesome :/. Plus it's 17 dollars. For a game that lasts like 40-60 hours one playthrough and just makes you wanna replay it...

... Yeah, this is my thread. I... I just love the Tales of Series more than any other series, and I just felt we NEEDED a thread dedicated to it's epicness, so... anyone? >_<

Oh, and the music is cool too. Made by the same guy who does Golden Sun and Star Ocean 3 (I don't know what else :/), but it all has the same ring to it... so... Here, here's Tales of the Abyss' second battle theme:

... k. I'm done... for now :/.

It is an RPG... just not a turn-based one. >_>

I played through Tales of Symphonia twice, and you're right, it is awesome.
Now, someone port Tales of Vesperia over, me wants it.

I've played three tales games. Tales of Symphonia was by far the best of the three. The other two were Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Legendia. Tales of Phantasia was just meh, but then again, it was for GBA. Tales of Legendia was pretty good, but nowhere near the greatness of Symphonia.2009-01-02 21:38:00

I have played the majority of them but none of them hooked me like symphonia. Me and my brother would stay up until 4 or so every night trying to get our new skills. I personally think abyss was okay but legendia and tales of the world were let downs.2009-01-02 21:58:00

Yeah, you're right, it is an RPG- just not a traditional one.

I just hope Vesperia comes over to the PS3 >_<. I probably will never get a 360 (just can't afford 3 consoles, I guess :/), and I want that one...

So... um... at least we have it... Like Abyss never came out in Europe. >_<.

Anywhos... So, who's your favorite character? Or song?

The only song I hate in Symphonia is the standard boss music...

uAmg88dJQd0

that one. just don't like it, though I've warmed up to it a bit...

almost very other song is awesome though :/.

... Now that I think of it, I CAN hear the Golden Sun boss theme in there. GAH! MAKING THEM ALL SOUND SO SIMILAR!

Wut? It's the very definition of JRPG.

And I actually quite liked that boss theme. One that sticks out as memorable for me:

Played (edit some of them(when available in europe/america) besides the new one, didnt really pay attention to spinoffs.. but imho.. you should start with tales of phantasia:
http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Tales_of_Phantasia

and then work your way up, its more fun imho.
One of the best snes games together with ALTAP, SOM, Terranigma and Illusion of time!

All tales of games on this page:
http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

way more than I expected

Well, I went through 60-70 hours of Tales of Symphonia and absolutely loved it, but I never did finish it.

But what I did play through was truly awesome. It does start slow, yes, but when you get use to it and things open up it is absolutely incredible.

What's the relation to the game Eternal Sonata though? Isn't it by the same people?

60-70 hours and you didn't finish? Either you're very slow or you went side-quest crazy.

Nah, not the same studio. They're both under Namco but Tales is by Namco Tales Studio and Eternal Sonata is by Tri-Crescendo.

Well, it was a long time anyway. It's not like I was sitting down with a stop watch.

I got close to finishing it, but something came up and I lost track of things.

Despite how great it is, I don't think I have the time to play through the whole thing again. I've tried to a few times, but it's just hard to budget that much time.

Ah, I love the Tales series.

I like turn-based RPGs well enough, but the Tales games and their wild combat holds my attention very, very easily. And whats more, I can choose to up the difficulty so I dont get bored.

Eternia was the first one I played, but never got to finish, as my original version, the third disc suddenly decided to die about halfway through. Argh. I'll soon use my PSX emulator to actually finally go all the way through it though. Very danged long game, however.

Symphonia of course is great. Shouldnt need to say much here. Though the camera is made of hate if you're playing with a 2nd player. And Genius and Mithos are both so blasted cute.

Symphonia 2 I have but havent gotten started on yet. I've got like, 5 zillion RPGs to play through right now..... I can tell already I'm probably gonna love this one, though.

Well... did you play the first Symphonia?

If so, still... I don't know why you'd want to change your name to that... It was an ok game, but nowhere near the awesomeness the core games are :/.

Plus the ending made me feel super weird =_=.

I try not to watch/find out about the recent new announced tales games, I'm tired of getting hyped up then getting dissapointed cause they won't let the game leave Japan (they pretty much flip a coin, I was really hyped for Radiant Mythology 2)

The 1 thing I really liked but HATE that they haven't brought it back in so long. Was the Combo Command accesory which made you pull off your moves by button presses like Street Fighter (Doing a Hadoken would do Demon Fang, Shoryken = Tiger Blade etc some were insanley hard to pull off) Its been in only 3 Tales games (and thankfully all were brough stateside at one point I love to play those games from time to time)

My Favorite Characters

Cress: can't beat the classic first Tales hero, Can buff and heal himself, and Could use Combo Command
Guy: Fast hitting, can self heal, lots of classic Tales moves, and can do more moves with Fofs
Luke: Same as Guy except slower and only a few classic moves
Kratos: 6 hits with standard attack, decent skills, can cast spells, and heal others, what more can you want? Sorry Zelos your personality can't beat Kratos combat
Rutee: Thief skills such as steal and find more $, Attacks that quickly rushed her back to safety, and a large amount of ice/water spells, healing and buffs, I always had her and kratos in my party in the spinoffs

The only one Tales game I have NOT played that left Japan is Vesperia due to it being Xbox only
My favorite is and has always been Phatasia with Abyss being a close 2nd. Least favorite is Symphonia.

I've only ever played Symphonia 1 and 2, and Abyss.

Symphonia and Abyss are just win. Abyss actually changed my life... or at least my perception on what constitutes identity and thus what is a person. It's the only videogame I feel comfortable saying it changed my life.

I want to play more, but there aren't any more really... I could buy Destiny since it's a PS1 game, but I don't have 80 bucks to spend on it. Have 80 bucks to spend on LBP2, sure, but not that. Probably is more anyhow.

And I want to play Destiny 2. Just seems so awesome.

then Vesperia I'd like, but there is no chance the PS3 one is coming over... And I have my suspicions of either of those two (don't really care about the psp one :/) ever coming over here, but, hey, if it does... BUY IT YOU FOOLS

I've only played Tales of Destiny on the PS1; it didn't have the best story ever, the most characters ever, and nowhere near the best graphics the PS1 could manage but I remember liking it a lot. As far as RPG combat systems go it probably had one of, if not the best out of all the RPGs the platform had to offer; even if it was just implementing fighting game-style battles it was still a lot more exciting then nearly any other rpg outside of Star Ocean 2 (which I actually grade to be slightly less, due to how equipment dependant and unversatile most characters were in combat in the game) whereas just about every other RPG franchise at the time stuck with the aging turn-based systems in favor of telling complex (and increasingly pretentious) storylines. Only thing I could really complain about was the high encounter rate.
Oh yeah, and it also had awesome music.
