Best way to create soundtracks?

Archive: 5 posts

Hey guys! :star:

In almost every mm picked lvl, there's a beuatiful original player-made soundtrack, and i am just wondering - how the fudge do they make such good soundtracks!?

I can't even make a simple beat, but others can make the super mario soundtrack? I heard some people use the computer to create soundtracks - but how? What is your experience with creating music, and do you use the computer, or the playstation?

From my experience... it's simply down to natural musical talent... probably why I'm useless with custom music. If you're good with music outwith the game you're gonna be in an advantageous position. Obviously you can practice and will slowly get better... but that's pretty difficult if you know nothing about music creation to start with.

I've found that there are many music makers who can't make levels but are awesome with music... forming an alliance with them can benefit you both as a level gets great custom music while they get the credit for it and become a bit more famous.

In my case, I made the Geometry Wars Retro Evolved OST just listening to it, and trying to imitate every piece of the song with my guitar. Slowly, I could figure out the score and make the sequencer.

I've got some advanced musical knowledge that helped a lot. In other words, I understand how musical tonalities work. I started a thread about this - Music Tonalities (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=66741-Music-Tonalities) - in which I included a link to a website that explains everything about tonalities system. Music tonalities are essential in all songs. Check this thread out, so you can go to the external link and learn about them. And, if you don't understand something, you can post in the mentioned thread and I'll try to help you to understand.

If you have Garage Band (or other applications like Melody Assistant), you can import a midi file and look at the notation. So if you went online and found a midi file of Super Mario theme music, you could import it to your music app on the computer, look at it, and then make the same music on an LBP Sequencer. I hope that makes sense, you're just visually copying down the musical notation. It's tedious and not fun, but if you're like me and can't just make something by sound, it's a useable method.2012-04-08 19:26:00

Well, I taught myself how to make sequencer music on LBP2.. It wasn't easy, and took a year for me just to make music that doesn't make peoples ears bleed

Now, I don't play an instrument. I used to play the drums a little, but that only helps with a simple beat. The only backround I have to music, other than playing the drums for a few months, is listening to music. I will give you a few tips on how to create a decent tune. I am not promising you success, however.

1. Find some professional sequencers. By this I mean, find some songs that were made by well known LBP2 music writers. For example, Festerd_Jester, Foofles, Velvet--Audio, hilightnotes, etc. Make sure you actually get the sequencers, so you can look through them, seeing how these professional music makers make such beautiful sounds. I personally recommend Festerd_Jester's music sequencers. They may be complex, but after hours of sifting through his music, I picked up a few tricks on how to make neat melodies or beats.

2. Don't be repetetive. Please. Don't. A good song is one that doesn't play the exact same tune over and over and over again for hours. Imagine listening to Mary had a Little Lamb over and over again. It would drive you INSANE. Another example would be Nyan Cat, which actually does have the same tune over and over again, and it annoys, easily.

3. Be original. That's easier said than done. It will take you a while to find an original melody that sounds good, and can be tweaked to fit the theme you are looking for.

4. Experiment. I can't stress enough how you will never ever get it right on the first try. If you pull out an instrument, put some notes down, listen to it, and delete it right away because it sounds horrible, you're not going to get anywhere. If you make a sound that sounds a little off, think to yourself; What can I change to make it sound better? What makes it sound bad? Would this sound better using another instrument? Etc.

5. Don't give up. Once again, you will not get it on the first try.

6. If you are not having fun making the song, chances are it won't turn out as well. If you really don't feel like making music, don't. I can only create good music when I'm in a good mood. If I'm not, my music sounds like roadkill.

Hopefully this will help you out. Good Luck!
