The Tumbler - Short "demo"

Archive: 17 posts

Creation Title: The Tumbler
Author's PSN: Morri
Brief Description: Quick test drive of the Tumbler from the Batman movies. Cockpit opens/closes in a similar fashion from the "real" thing. It has non-working flaps at the moment though so you will see the motors attached to it.

So I decided to take a break from working on Raiders Part II and started watching The Dark Knight, just to stop the movie in the middle when I realized how cool of a car the Tumbler is and why not have it in LBP?

It is a very (VERY) short "level", no bubble scores or anything like that, I just did it to test the car and see how it works. The original level has a bunch of ramps and stuff, but I spent at least a couple of hours working on the cockpit that I was too tired to finish it.

I know that I should have used the 3-way switch for forward/reverse control, but since the cockpit is so small, that caused so many issues in trying to get out of the car just to have it accelerate full speed that I went for the grab-switch instead, maybe this weekend I will make the car a little bigger which will give me more room with the controls.

Anyway, just take a look at it and enjoy it, if you are planning to do a Batman-themed level and want it to use it, let me know.

EDIT:
Took a few pics and added the ramp:

that's REALLY cool. You need to make a level for it.2009-01-02 22:33:00

for the movement you should use the 3 way switch with winches I made one the other day and thought I was a genius and then came on here and saw the tank that was made long ago and I felt stupid. but it is a great way of making a vehicle with 2 grab switches have a forward and reverse, you should look into it.

also the car looks great and will hope you make it a gift in a level soon

It would be really cool if the outer parts of the car could fall of and you'd be able to driver further on the bike, just like in the film. It might get slightly complicated then, though. Great job, nonetheless.2009-01-02 22:58:00

Very cool! I made a batmobile based on the older 1990's one, that came out awesome... and a batwing from the same movie, but I could never get past the batcave in the design process because I really didn't care anymore. It's just been taking up space on my moon for a month and a half :/

I'm definitely gonna give that thing a spin later, as I was hoping someone would do a good version of the more-awesome newschool batman toys.

Thanks, I am actually thinking about it, but have to think about a good story to really use it.

hmmm.. thanks for the tip! I will look at the forward/reverse option, I had with the 3 way, it even activated the flaps on the back for it, but had to go with the grab instead. Thanks, didn?t think about it!

I honestly thought about it, but then I will need to make the car take up 3 layers instead of 2, it will be huge, problem that I faced was how to get one of the wheels to move to the same layer as the other one, an emitter will have to do it. Ideas?

Thanks, I tweaked more this afternoon and now the cockpit works better, still have some more work to do, then if turns out really well I will put it as a prize for the level.

Well done, it looks great! I was able to flip it rather easily, but other than that it was awesome. I hope to see it in a full length level soon!

Edit: The Batpod idea sounds awesome! I wish you luck on that if you decided to try it. Perhaps you could still keep it two layers wide and just make the furthest layer the Batpod. You could have the Batpods second wheel hidden in front of the giant back wheel. Then make the parts connecting it dissolvable. Once they dissolve, you're in the Batpod.

Thanks, I need to adjust the strength of the motor, it is way too powerful for such a light vehicle, even though the final speed is not that great, the acceleration is too much sometimes.

Hmmm... you gave me a great idea, creating the batpod completely on the second layer... Thanks!

No problem! I even just whipped up a quick version myself to see if it would work. It was very basic, just a test of the idea, but it appeared doable. I didn't have anywhere near the detail you have though. I wish you luck!

So, if you do make a level, are you going for an original idea or will you be recreating the scene from The Dark Knight?

Yes, I think it can be done, once you enter the cockpit you would already be sitting in the batpod.

Not sure, to use the tumbler efficiently it would involve (in my opinion) car chases, jumps and crashing through walls and would need to copy the scene from the movie where the joker is by its side with the RPG, that would be a nice boss for it.

Hey Morri. I just wanted to let you know that I will be checking this out tonight and get back to you with my thoughts. I am looking forward to it

*EDIT*

Wow Morri, that's quite a vehicle you have there. It looks beautiful and is polished to perfection. The reclining hood is just the icing on the cake. I would love to see a level that makes use of it. If you put that same attention to detail into an entire level then it would be something really special. Speaking of which I tried out the other level you have published but could not find a thread to comment. Let me know if you will be making a thread, otherwise I would be happy to PM my thoughts

Thanks for this! Much appreciated. I am into small details as much as I can, perhaps that's my biggest problem as I tend to take toooo long to finish something because of that.

I would appreciate your comments on my first level, you can find the thread on the my signature below. I will be adding a video to it soon as well.

I gave this level a try. It's short, and it's in return for the F4F system, even though you did not ask for it.

I must say that it looks great. It's clean and really does look like the things from the movies.

I have suggestions though which could make it even better...

You could add rockets to it. This could be done in several ways...

You could place a small one at the rear and hidden behind something. Set it to 0 boost and it will give "enviromental smoke" without actually changing the thrust. You could set it to activate at the same time as the main motors so smoke comes out as it moves.

You could set a large rocket on the rear and have it as a "turbo" for large gaps. Put a magnetic switch on the vehicle attached to it, and then the paired key on the ground hidden away when you need to boost. This should make the rockets fire briefly and make it look like it's jumping over roofs.

Speaking of jumping, you could put a rocket on the ground of the vehicle or a piece of material attached to a piston to the body. The piston needs to have a very short firing time, but it may cause troubles with sticking out and making the wheels not touching the ground... but anyway, a rocket underneath the vehicle with the magnetic key system could make it "leap" as appropriate as well.

Finally, I noticed the doors to the roof were a little bit fiddly. Have you considered putting the switch they are on set to directional? This should help it move to only the open or closed position, rather than in between.

Once again though, the level and the vehicle looks absolutely amazing! Excellent job!

That was my first impulse until I realized the rockets occupy a "thick" layer, so it would be on top/under one of the wheels and not in thin layer between them, that frustrated me... a LOT! so I had to go with a red light that turns on/off along with the motor.

That my friend is a COOL idea! again, just need to find a decent place for the rocket on the back.

That is an option as well if the boost does not work.

I'm using the grab swith, can't remember if they have the option for directional, if they do, HOW DUMB of me by not implementing it, I spent SOO many hours trying to optimize the roof that at times I put explosives on the car and set them off just to see the thing explode into pieces so I could reduce my anger and not throw the controller at the dog or something...

I will try that as soon as I get home.

Once again though, the level and the vehicle looks absolutely amazing! Excellent job!

Thank you for this, I need more feedback like yours!

Ive got a simple idea to turn it into a motorbike, design a simple motorbike in the middle layer .Then cover all sides with wafer thin dissolve material and build your car on this. Then during the level make the dissolve material dissolve using a sensor switch and the car parts would fall off.
nice car btw

Wow man... I just finished playing this. AWESOME vehicle. Seriously, everything was just so smooth... I loved the reclining hood

Only suggestion is that maybe you could tweak the power of the motor bolts to not make it face diagonally forward everytime you start 'er up... But that's not really a problem. Great job man

Oh, for the record, I gave it 5 stars, a heart and the Creative seal of approval ^_^

Thank you for the suggestion, I am taking notes on all of them and will definitely try them out, already have about half of a level in ideas to use the car, just need to make them coherent...

Thank you! I will be adding some weight to the front of the car, so it does not do that anymore, I guess I put too much power on it to get a good speed. That, and and some firepower to blow up stuff...

Thanks for the ratings!
