Contraption Challenge 16: Block Stacker

It’s that time of year again: Easter! To celebrate, here’s a completely non-Easter themed Contraption Challenge.

Building blocks! Scattered all over the floor! This won’t do at all.
http://cdn.rocketcheetah.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/CC16-messy-760x305.png
Your task is to create a contraption that will allow us to stack these blocks so that they’re tidied away and less of a mess:
http://cdn.rocketcheetah.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/CC16-tidy-760x4461.png
Your contraption could be anything from a crane to a flying UFO with a functional tractor beam – the more creative and outside-the-box, the better!

The Contraption

Should be able to move the blocks to form a stack with some level of accuracy. Don’t worry too much about the stack itself, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
We want some measure of control over what gets stacked next and/or where it goes.
Blocks cannot be emitted or teleported into place. That’s too easy!
PlayStation Move control can be used, but not to pick up blocks directly.
It doesn’t have to be a moving vehicle; it can be fixed in place within the level.
You must construct something – a Sackbot with some logic doesn’t count as a contraption.

The Blocks

Use the blocks we provide (get them here). There are four different shapes and sizes – you should have at least one of each in your level.
You can already have a couple pre-stacked as a starting point.
Feel free to change the appearance of the blocks (material, stickers etc) as long as the size and shapes remain.
Logic can be added, though the blocks should not be or become ‘sticky’ or defy gravity when the contraption isn’t handling them. They also shouldn’t fly around stacking themselves or have any independent moving capabilities of their own – the contraption should be doing all the stacking.

The Level

Try and keep the level around 2-3 minutes in length.
Provide quick access to the contraption, there’s no need for long cutscenes!
We only judge the contraption, but a nicely presented level is always a plus.

How to take part:
Go to the level “CC16 – Get your blocks here! (http://lbp.me/v/-bw0tj)”, copy it to your moon and capture the blocks.
Create a new level with some blocks ready to be stacked on the floor and your contraption.
Once it’s finished, give it a title with CC16 in there somewhere (e.g. “CC16 – Super Awesome Block Stacker!”.
Publish before 23:55 BST on Sunday 29th April 2012 (what time that is where I live (http://lbp.me/search?q=cc16)?)
Go here (http://tinyurl.com/LBP2Contraptions) and post a link to your level.
Check out what everyone else has been making by searching for CC16 (or just click here (http://lbp.me/search?q=cc16) to queue up some levels).

When all of your incredible creations are done and published, we’ll play the levels and pick five finalists (and now you’ve got another judge to impress as we welcome QuietlyWrong to the Contraption Challenge Team!) You’ll get the chance to vote which one you liked the best and we’ll release a video counting down to reveal the winner, who will be awarded both a Prize Crown and a Contraption Challenge Pin! This super-rare in-game pin is awarded to only the best of the best in recognition of your creative skillz of awesome for you to proudly display on your profile.

Good luck!

Rules:

The level must be playable in LittleBigPlanet 2.
Make sure your levels are viewable on LBP.me (find out how to change your privacy settings here).
You can only publish ONE level with ONE contraption.
You can enter either by yourself OR in a team of up to 4 people (one person should publish the level and list the other creators in the level description with @ in front of their PSN name).
Levels must be published BEFORE 23:55 BST 29th April 2012 with CC16 in the title.
Edit your level and republish it as much as you like before the deadline, but do not republish after the deadline (at least not until the contest is over). Any levels published or republished after the deadline will be disqualified, except in in exceptional circumstances.
Make it your own creation, don’t copy someone else’s and claim it as yours!

Hmm, I don't really know if I can ask here...
Can I make those blocks smaller (to perfectly fit in smaller grids)?
And can I attach a piece of Hologram or Sticker panel to them?

They may visit here, I don't know. But judging from the rules, I'd say you can't resize the blocks but you can probably attach holo or sticker to them.2012-04-10 11:55:00

Stacking blocks? Loved doing this back in kindergarten! And...maybe now...
I'm in. The hard part now is making a functioning and creative contraption!

Awesome! I'll do it! One question, can we use a gyroscope, probably not right? I just need to know before I start building.2012-04-11 13:00:00

Can I make those blocks smaller (to perfectly fit in smaller grids)?

Yes, as long as all the blocks are rescaled by the same amount.

And can I attach a piece of Hologram or Sticker panel to them?

Yes, as long as it's not visible in Play Mode.

One question, can we use a gyroscope, probably not right?

Yes, but it has to be turned off after the block has been stacked.

These answers as based on the following snippets from the official forum thread (http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/LittleBigPlanet-PS3-General/Contraption-Challenge-16-Block-Stacker/m-p/15673499). I'd suggest asking there for further clarification.

Question when the contraption picks up the blocks can we use a tag and a follower ?Yes. As long as the contraption is doing the work, you can add whatever logic you like on the blocks such as followers to assist it.

Getting asked a lot about making things sticky.

To clarify for everyone, you CAN make parts of the contraption and/or the blocks sticky when moving the blocks into place. What we don't to see is blocks remaining sticky after they've been stacked to prevent the stack from falling over.

Do all the creators get the rewards if you work together? If not, what purpose does it even serve to list their names other than for the obvious reasons?

Also, does the contraption have to touch the blocks, and are we allowed to use any kind of logic when it is handling them?Yes, all creators will get a crown and a pin (but only if they did actually contribute).

The contraption doesn't have to touch the blocks, although in that case it should be moving them in a way that makes sense (i.e. a tractor beam).

Yes, you can use any logic when it's handling them.

I have gyroscopes on my blocks to keep them upright. Is this ok or should I revise? You can use a gyro to stabilise the blocks while they're being manipulated by the contraption but the logic must be turned off once the block is placed.

Question does my contraption have to work with anythig because I have a idea and It will only work if I build the level and set up the right logic to make it work. The contraption only needs to work in your level so you can include logic in the level itself if your contraption requires it.

Does the contraption need to pick up the object or can the object be emitted and land in the contraptionNo. The blocks must be picked up and placed/dropped in-place by the contraption. They can't be emitted.

Can we do what we want with the blocks ? (but not when the logic is off i know)
But should we have to make a form with the blocks ? with my idea i can'tIf you're asking if you can glue the blocks together or change their shape then no, you aren't allowed to do that.

the blocks have a microchip to make them stick (not sticky or anything, logic). I do something wrong? Can I correct it?You can attach logic to the blocks and resize them (within reason) as long as the logic doesn't hold the blocks in place once your contraption has let go of them.

I have some trickery up my sleeve. Is this legal? The red square is an exact copy of the block you provided, but in sticker panel material.
http://i8.lbp.me/img/ft/e88b37ff7fa1d9a34c8b90a33c0ea2dc677c87d2.jpgOnly if:

The block edges are still visible. It has to still look like a block.
It still has some sort of physics so that it can be stacked.

I'm tempted to say don't change the blocks to sticker panel or holo at all, but as it's something we didn't consider when making the rules, I guess you can.

That kind of applies to everything - if there's nothing in the rules that says you can't do it, you probably can get away it as long as it's still doing everything we ask it to.

Now, I have had quite a lot of people ask about resizing the blocks. We have kind of touched briefly on that in the rules, but here's my answer: you can ONLY change the size of the blocks as long as you scale them ALL the same. You can't just increase the size of one of them. I'd still advise not to resize them much anyway because we really don't want to see giant or tiny blocks, but resizing them by a small amount is fine.

I was considering having a go at this, using a holo-based CCD to detect the block types, and an AI stacking system, but being able to attach arbitrary logic to the blocks removes all the "challenge".

Since they've even gone as far as allowing you to attach followers, it sounds like the key is more the presentation than the technical achievement of stacking the blocks without using movers, so the winner will clearly be the one whose contraption is a bunch of cute kittens that lick the blocks into place.

Well, yeah, that's what you get when you make it a popular vote. But getting nominated for the finals is more about creativity and skill, in my experience.

I don't think AI is even allowed, since they say the blocks can't fly around stacking themselves. Had to scrap my initial idea because I missed it initially.

CCD? Charge-Coupled Device?

Well, even if you're using a crane-based design, you'll still need something to determine the optimal position for the current block.

CCD? Charge-Coupled Device?

Yeah. AIUI, they're light-sensitive components which are used in a matrix configuration for digital imaging. I meant something along those lines, like a matrix of hologram pieces with impact sensors to determine which block type it's currently 'looking at'.

You could also use it in the stack to determine where there are currently gaps to be filled.

Sorry, that was really badly worded. Didn't mean to imply AI wasn't allowed, just your idea. 2012-04-12 23:34:00

I didn't see anyone enter a bunch of kittens (just pikmin, and they didn't do any licking at all), so I still have a chance at this. I did everything else you complained about, and published a tornado machine (http://lbp.me/v/-06edd) which is mostly driven by logic on the blocks.

Did anyone else enter?
