--Steamclunk's Marvelous Machine--

Archive: 15 posts

<3 Hey everyone Arastoph here with a new project to take my mind off the stress of creating the Elementalis series (which is still in construction after some really annoying logic issues)

Introducing....

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/arastoph/steamclunklogo-1.png

Within this level you meet Steamclunk, a very upset little sackbot who has been working his entire life on building the most amazing machine to ever grace sackind. The machine has many many many MANY! different purposes ranging from the most simple of tasks to global networks! and if it were to fall into the wrong hands it could be a rather potent weapon!
Unfortunatley it has....
Steamclunk gives you the hard task of venturing through his gear based labarynth filled with crushing pistons, gas vents, hazardous pitfalls and crazy contraptions which YOU obtain the power to control!

Thats right.. in this level you control the gears, cogs, barriers and platforms around you by using Steamclunk's handheld COG Manipulation device! By pressing L1 everything in the level with move from one state to another. With each press you may find platforms rise and fall, twist and turn and places you thought would be unreachable suddenly become the chosen path.

In order to beat this level you will need excellent timing for your jumps and button presses in order to make sure you active platforms so that they are there for you when you jump! otherwise it will be back to the checkpoint for your poor little sack chum!
Other activities include
* Grappling hook action combined with good old fashion platforming
* Creatinator powerups that will not leave you high and dry..
* Complex clockwork devices that are fully controlled by the player
* Puzzle solving activities
* Bonus race level after completing the game once...
*Time Trials
* A rather epic boss fight with the manipulator!
* Helping a helpless clockwork sackbot from becoming the most stupid inventor in existance.
* did i mention cogs? LOTS OF COGS!
* oh and sticky stuff you can walk on and clean! wooo!

:star:Here are some previews of the level. :star:

Sounds a lot like comphermc's new level "The Button" .. But by the looks of it, your level will probably more exciting to play. A very original story with (what sounds like) awesome gameplay and amazing scenery will make this an amazing level. I can't wait to see the finished product. Good Luck!2012-04-08 02:21:00

yes you are right about comphermc's level being similar i started working on a principle like this one before i saw that level but after playing "the button" i did get a bit more inspiration to carry on making it and simplyfying the controls to just L1 (i had two buttons to cause two effects). It will play very similar to that but it will have a more retro steampunk/victorian theme and a ranking system for how fast you complete the first section on the level (this game will feature 1 main level and two sub levels due to complexity) and it will have a boss battle and a chase scene all using the L1 button to change the surroundings so it takes the idea a step futher too.
Thanks for the nice replies guys

New features added -
After completing the level once you will obtain a sticker which will allow you to interact with the scene a lot more and remove cutscenes during race mode.
Ranks
Depending on how fast you complete the level (in race mode) you will obtain a particular rank with the highest being the prestigious "crazy gear" rank! which causes some rather entertaining stuff to happen as a bonus to the player!

Ranks include
Crazy Gear - 27000 points or more
A - 18000 to 26900
B- 12000 to 17900
C - 8000 to 11900
D - 4000 to 7900
and finally the "denied!!" rank if you fail to get anything less than 4000 (which to be honest is an accomplishment of its own!!)

Looks awesome so far dude, and it's steampunk! I love that genre, and the race sticker is a good idea as it gives an incentive for players to come back and try again for the high score. I really like the design you've used in your level, looks really good, and I'd be up for testing your level out, you know me somewhat.. for your level badge, why not stick with the one that is in the title logo in your 1st post? It looks great 2012-04-10 17:37:00

Mahoosive bump!!!
I figured rather than making a whole new thread i might as well continue my updates where i started them (even though my last update was a rather long time ago :S)
So, without futher ado... here is a few new screen shots showing the final stages of the level in its almost completed glory!!

This adventure is now 4 levels long!! all connected by level links/sub level links
The titles for each are...
Steamclunk's Marvelous Machine
Grinding Gears
Malfunction Mayhem
and... The heart of the problem
3 of the levels are standard platforming with the last level a 2-3 part boss fight which requires you to interact with the platforms around you to survive the onslaught

I would consider the level to now be a 4-5 out of 5 difficulty rating and for that reason i would not suggest my level to those who like simple run and collect points levels! This level is for the people who like a challenge!!
Anyone 12+ should have no problem
Please leave any feedback here! it all helps!! <3

Wow! Just wow! It is most definitely a beautiful looking level if nothing else.

I've always been a little in awe of people that can make a level as visually stunning as this. I always just get stuck into making a technical object that works, but when it comes to actual level building I start to lose interest.

I can't wait to see the finished product. Keep it up. If you find yourself in need of more testers, just drop me a line. PSN: Chicago51

Gonna head over to lbp.me to queue up some of you're other work.

Can I ask you a question? You said something about grappling hooks, but isn't this level played with a sackbot? (judging from the fact the player controlling a set sackperson and not its own)2012-10-15 00:53:00

At no point does the player turn into a sackbot himself so he can always use the grappling hook. The player controls other sackbots at some point in the level via "call" nodes which require the player to hold down traingle to make the sackbot move to the next checkpoint in the level. An example of this is seen towards the end of the adventure when you require a second character to hold down buttons, levers and enter a correct code into a lock mechanism to get to a chamber up ahead.
The amount of logic in this level is insane! throughout the level multiple parts of the enviroment change depending on what state you have the handheld device on by pressing L1 (explained in the story) and the boss fight quite literally fills my screen with logic when all the microchips are open at the same time! no wonder this project has taken me since april!!!

Wow, although yes it looks really beautiful, the thing that most excites me about this level is how you described it as being purposefully difficult. I personally love a good platforming challenge. It's what I most love to design and what I most look for to play. I have a feeling you got the idea for your gameplay from The Button, am I right? No problem with that, as I love that level and would enjoy playing more levels like it!2012-10-17 18:00:00

in case anyone is wondering when they look at the level and see the tick and cross boxes everywhere they are there to show that something can be interacted with and has an on and off state or a safe and unsafe state as well other clues are shown through green and red lights changing with each press of the L1 button. Basically if you get stuck and can't see a way to move foreward don't heasitate to try L1 because it could just show you a new way through the machine 2012-10-18 21:11:00
