VirCo HUD Training/Testing

Archive: 8 posts

The VirCo HUD -- Or virtual controller heads-up display -- is a project I began working on last night. It displays everything a player needs to know, even the controller! It's sort of like the Assassin's Creed HUD in the sense that it shows all of the controls.
This particular version uses my Holyguard Knight sackbot. The Knight can free-run (Just by holding L1!), attack with his energy blade, and use a high-tech visor to reveal even more info about the environment. The simple color-coded vision mode is as easy as holding R2.
The level is currently an Alpha test, as it may have bugs and whatnot. With my experience, it seems to work really well. The level simply gives a short tutorial and trial, just to see how people react.
Please let me know of any problems and suggestions you may have. Thanks!

Changelog:
0.20 - Initial Alpha test version
0.25 - Added Heavy Attacks, shifted HUD up
0.26 - Added a more clear description of the colors in the Visor
0.27 - Fixed free-run issue, changed costume to match WIP 0.30's.

To Come:
0.30 - Enemy Scanner, new testing level, better camera angle (All done but the level)
0.32 - Holyflight mechanic? (Jump/glide by flapping energy wings [Press X a bunch in midair]), recommendations?

NEW!!
I've got a level/series in mind for this, but I need music. Particularly, battle/boss stuff. I was thinking something like electric guitars, for a Devil May Cry-like feel. I enjoy the battle music those games have. Anyone wanna help?

The new level has been posted! Find it here! VirCo Labs (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=69756-VirCo-Labs&p=997802)

I am really liking the interface. It is clean and pristine (haha), and the costume looks very nice. I like the variety of controls you have available too. However, I am unable to freewall on the yellow surfaces. Could you tell me how I do this?2012-04-07 23:21:00

You should be able to do this by holding L1 while you're next to it. You MUST be in the same layer as the yellow glow. The system I use requires you to touch the hologram to activate the ascent, as well.
Thank you for the feedback(: I'm working on a brand new level for the demonstration. It'll be more like an actual level, have clearer instructions, etc., so I'll work on the range of the freerun hologram while I'm at it.

Some really solid logic here. I got stuck in the second room though, the L1 functionality was, I felt, the weakest element as it wasn't as reliable as everything else.2012-04-11 09:59:00

Yeah, the climbing's giving me poo. I think I know what the problem is, and I hope I can fix it.
The set-up uses a hologram over the climbable surface that detects when you can climb, and through some logic makes you go up and away. The problem here is that when you, say, run to a ladder, you'll hit it and auto-switch layers (ending up next to the ladder, unable to climb it). Putting the hologram farther away would likely make it work better, but you'd end up three feet off the ladder.
I just now got an idea that should solve this, and when I get on next I'll be sure too update the current level.
Thanks for the input, guys

Played it yesterday, it looks really nice and I love the visor effects! But like said earlier, the climbing can get pretty hard if the engine keeps pushing us into another layer. Maybe you should give the climbing hologram an l shape.2012-04-13 10:32:00

The L shape's a good idea, too. I'll be on in a few to F4F some people, and I'll try my idea I had, and if it doesn't work I'll try that.

Edit: My idea worked. When free-running, you cannot auto-change layers. You can manually by using up/down on the stick, still, but this should solve the problem. I'll have the level reposted in a bit.

On another note, anyone feel that I should post the new level? It's in the works, but I could update it as I add things to it, and you guys could let me know what's good and what's not, so on and so forth. I might code-lock it, so I won't get random people rating it down because it's not done and whatever, but I'll have the code posted on the thread should I use it.
