Machinima Help - Is the lip sync bust?

Archive: 9 posts

So, I have been working for a VERY long time now on a series called Game Thing...! which is made in LBP2, but with lots of post-editing in Final Cut. Every time a character opens their mouths is a separate shot, recorded and edited in, and the we re-dub over the lines so they sound better.

This used to work well, now it does not. It seems more like random mouth flapping, rather than as if it is making any attempt at all to work out how to look good. I thought perhaps changes we had made to the set had made the system prioritise accurate lip sync to a lower degree, so i deleted stuff that wasn't essential to just have what was in the shot. This improved nothing.

I did did get a new headset since last time, which you may think could be the best reason, but the last one was terrible and the sounds were unclear. This one is crisp and perfect. I also did some animation tests with it on the day I got it, and the results were perfect first time, all the time.

But now the game is just refusing to take into account how many syllables are in a sentence no matter how clear i speak. Any thoughts?

maybe it was inadvertently introduced in one of the later firmwares? it's not as if it's a usual question so perhaps it's been overlooked (until now)2012-04-05 17:33:00

That seems entirely likely, but I hope it isn't the case, since that is not really fixable by me. I am determined to finish the last 2 episodes of the series, which is about 16 minutes of content. At the current rate, that would take about 6 months to make look good, rather than 4 weeks. Any idea how I could bring this to MediaMolecule's attention? It is unlikely I will get through, but I feel I need to try.2012-04-05 17:39:00

I have found that LBP2 is not nearly as reactive as LBP1 in getting mouths to move. It works, but not really as crisp. I usually use a blue tooth headset to get the mouth to move and record via Skype for lines when acting etc. (We do a jump count after both the HD PVR and skype capture are recording which helps us to sync the two during editing. )

One thought is to really crank the volume of the mic into the PS3. That might help get the mouths to react a bit better.

True, but LBP1 doesn't have even half the tools we need to make what we make. I wish it could just work just that little bit better. It wasn't perfect before, but it was bearable. Making episodes was a personal challenge that I was willing to accept. These reccent technical issues are just plain depressing. I will finish episodes 4 and 5 if it kills me. Right now it is looking like it might.2012-04-06 23:37:00

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't meaning to do it in LBP1. I was saying it hasn't worked well since then and yes I agree I wish it did work much better. What I was suggesting is turning up your mic to see if that made it work better as I haven't had a chance to try that yet. ")

I tried that just now. I also worked in a blank level so to make sure it was only focusing on the lip sync. I did see some improvement, but not enough to confirm that it was any different. I could have just been imagining it. I plan to do further tests when I am not so bummed out about all of this. I really miss being being able to work on this happily.2012-04-07 02:25:00

Yeah me too. Let me know if you find a sweet spot on anything that helps make it a bit better.2012-04-07 03:42:00
