F4F: fragile rock

Archive: 10 posts

Just wanted to get this level some F4F, its had about 50ish plays now and some good feedback. I've fixed a number of bugs including one with the final boss that left the level uncompletable.

I'm taking a little break from creating and I'm having a lot of fun playing. I always leave constructive comments on the levels I like or think could do with a tweak, so F4F is not a problem.

As previously stated......

Do you have what it takes to get to the top of 'fragile rock'? You probably do as this is not a hard level. A simple platformer with a couple of tricks.

You must retrive a precious flower from the top of the mountain, but unfortunatly the moutain has been heavily mined and is close to collapse. If that wasn't bad enough. The miners have awaked something else in the mountain.... dum dum dum.

Its not as pretty as some of the levels you may find in here, but fear I do not have the time and skills to compete. I hope some will play through to end though.

Here are my thoughts on the level:

- "I have a bad back" come on. Say "I'm too uppity" or don't raise the subject of why he doesn't go at all.

- That bit of the mountait that falls off - Are you just trying to frustrate people?

- Bridge was pretty cool

- The seesaw thing is very not-clear as to what you're supposed to do.

- The lava cooling thing was also cool and creative

- The boss was ridiculously hard. I'm not even sure how you were suposed to beat it. So you go and try to pop a brain, and something shoots out and pushes you away, killing you in the process. Great. I only killed it because I got lucky and something broke.

- Aesthetics fit, but were kinda boring

All in all a good level.

I disagree with some things in BassDeluxe's post.

-I thought the rocks breaking apart was a great idea and it worked well, too.

-I knew what to do with the see saw, when the guy talks to you, you can see a platform up above, besides, the drop-something-on-the-other-end-of-that-seesaw-to-go-up maneuver should be known by all gamers.

-The boss could have been prettied up a bit, but it worked. Make the switches invisible and don't make his other hand fire (when the normal hand goes up, it knocks you into the fire hand).

-The "I have a bad back" thing, don't bring it up, make him say something else, or take him off his horse.

Fun level, seen better, seen much worse. 7/10

Which time are you talking about. I was talking about the time that if you jump on a certain bit that piece falls off and sends you to the bottom of the mountain. Smart, yes. Fun, no.

And I think the boss must've been updated sometime after my post. Either that or there was something I was missing during the fight.

Don't worry your feedback is not for nought.

Here are my thoughts on the level:

- "I have a bad back" come on. Say "I'm too uppity" or don't raise the subject of why he doesn't go at all.

-The "I have a bad back" thing, don't bring it up, make him say something else, or take him off his horse.

The prince does needs to come across as uppity and lazy. The whole intro needs work though. The prince will be a recuring character, for later levels, and will become more of a nemesis. He needs a complete redesign.

- That bit of the mountait that falls off - Are you just trying to frustrate people?

I know what you mean. Its a little cheap. There are the breaking platforms before then so you may get the hint. I'll think about adding something to grab onto to save yourself.

- The seesaw thing is very not-clear as to what you're supposed to do.

Have added a camera and a helpfull cutscene.

- The boss was ridiculously hard. I'm not even sure how you were suposed to beat it. So you go and try to pop a brain, and something shoots out and pushes you away, killing you in the process. Great. I only killed it because I got lucky and something broke.

The boss was bugged and is now fixed. I've also added a hint system so if you get killed at different points, a hint cutscene will appear when you respawn telling you how to approach the boss.

- Aesthetics fit, but were kinda boring

True I need to work on my art style. I'm more of a gadget man than an artist.
What I would like to do is to have bright blue skys outside and dark, fiery red on the mountain. Maybe we'll get an enviroment switch in a patch soon.

So here are my thoughts:

1) first of all, when i started the level i thought.... "wow that horse looks weird o_O"
Maybe you could make it a bit smoother on the edges.

2) I never did rocks so i don't know how to get cool looking rocks, but it's seems that the rocks don't have much detail...

3) Those fire spitting "enemies" are awesome!!! They're not to hard and not to easy, just great!

4) The part with that spinning wheel with fire logs.... It's not really clear where to go actually. Maybe an arrow or a speech bubble or something.

5) The crushing rocks and falling bridges are really cool, thats a pro :hero:

6) The part after the boss looks really cool, it's refreshing, and i didn't expect it to...
...Fall down. I thought i had to go on top of the mountain

Maybe you could have done this kinda style also somewhere else in the level. or at least some more variation with materials, like a wooden structure or something to keep everthing "standing"

Hope i helped

Alrighty, here are my thoughts man. Not a bad level by any means but does need some reworking:

Pros

- Loved the fire-spitting enemies. Had a hard time with them at first but when I got the hang of them they were no problem. Which means it's a perfectly designed enemy

- The falling rocks were cool and you made it work without it being incredibly annoying.

- The boss looked good, but needs some work (down below)

Cons

- Get some sound effects going for the falling rocks! Check in the mechanical sounds section

- I really didn't understand the boss. I didn't beat him after 2 tries and by the sound of it, it's really too bad because I hear the part afterwards is neat. I know you tried to explain how to beat him, but timing out the kick is impossible with the emitters spewing out molten rocks and the camera not allowing you to see the crushing arms behind.

- Make your switches invisible. Looks really shotty otherwise.

- It isn't really visually appealing at all. Try adding to the background (ie: adding some fire to it in cracked lines going down the mountain for a lava effect)

So like I said, not a bad level, just needs some reworking and you got yourself a solid level
