Games and ME Project

Hey gang.

I've been trying to find time to post this little project of mine and I wanted to share it with the rest of the Sackfolk around here just to see what you all think.

So I was sitting down with a bunch of people from our podcast and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to make levels on Little Big Planet that could promote our site?" Sure enough, the rest of our team thought it was a good idea - and so I worked diligently to get into the Little Big Planet beta so I could work on a quick level to promote our site.

Needless to say, two weeks just wasn't enough to understand the complexity of the level editor and to make coherent enemies for the game.

Towards the end of 2008, I approached this idea again with renewed vigor and renewed vision. Instead of a shameful attempt to say "Go and check out our podcast," we figured that we're going to figure out what Little Big Planet is for each of the members of our podcast and see if we can create a coherent story out of it that not only will entertain people who check the levels out, but something that we'd want to play ourselves. After all... we're playing Little Big Planet for the levels, not some spammy advertisement.

So here's some details... I'll try to fill in some more information as the days go by and drop in with some screen shots as well.

Project Title: Games and ME (Acts 1-8)

Levels:
Act 1: Introduction (Planning 10%)
Act 2: Save Vanessa (In Production 25%, 50% thermo)
Act 3: Save Chris
Act 4: Save Ryan
Act 5: Save C.K.
Act 6: Save Mark (Planning 5%)
Act 7: Save ??????
Act 8: The Last Stand

Note about status:

Planning
In planning stage. Sketching and storyboarding (yes, I'm doing that) are being done. Also, this is where we determine what should be built (enemies, obstacles, NPCs, devices) for that level.

In Production
Enemies, NPCs, obstacles, and devices have been finalized and level and asset construction has begun.

Post-Production
Level is being given decos and textures. This is mainly when we try to make the level look pretty.

Ready for Testing
The level's complete and ready for testing for all number of players.

Published
The level is now live and ready for play and the key has been placed in the previous level.

Thermo
The % filled in the thermometer for that level.

Concept:
The members of the Games and ME crew have been kidnapped by 6 of the biggest and evilest (fictional) video game publications in the world! It's up to you and your friends to save them.

Level Details & Styling

Act 1: Introduction
Inspiration: Braid (?)
Player meets Alex who tells the player that he won't be able to watch the Games and ME podcast recording because his team has been kidnapped. MO is determined via a video of a shadowed figure asking for random. Player has the option to give ransom to bad guy or hop onto the Games and ME jet to begin the operation. Giving the ransom does not give the player the key to Act 2.

Act 2: Save Vanessa
Inspiration: Contra, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War
Player jumps into a parachute from a plane that'll drop down into the enemy base. Once there, he/she sneaks around search lights in order to procure the infamous Paintinator - a weapon that'll put the evil corporations to pasture. The player is then ambushed as soon as he picks up the Paintinator and he sets off to find Vanessa before it's too late! The end sequence will require the player to pull Vanessa to safety (literally) culminated in a sequence where the player and Vanessa fight the EIC of said magazines.

Act 3: Save Chris
Inspiration: Gears of War 2
The level is to be an elaboration of the gameplay elements found in Act 2, with more stylized enemies and more shooting.

Act 4: Save Ryan
Inspiration: Mario, Contra, Castlevania
Ryan's actually the only person who got kidnapped who doesn't want to leave, since he loves Japan. The level is to be an homage to old-school type gameplay. Minimal shooting.

Act 5: Save C.K.
Inspiration: Prince of Persia
Mostly platforming with minimal shooting.

Act 6: Save Mark
Inspiration: Resident Evil series, Left 4 Dead
Mark's level is basically a zombie level with enemies that have their heads as the only weakness. Mostly shooting.

Act 7: Save ?????
Inspiration: Mega Man 2
The last person who needs saving will be the toughest fight. Specific inspirations drawn are from Quick Man and Bubble Man stages so far. Mostly shooting.

Act 8: The Last Stand
Inspiration: Contra, Gears of War
The Last Stand will be a combination of several different enemies and will be multi-tiered with the ending. Will be a mix of platforming and shooting.

I'll be posting some screen shots of Act 2 tonight.

Currently only 2 people (including myself) have the game so we're working on it in a central location.

In order to produce the enemies and the levels themselves I'm working with each "kidnapped" person to make the level to their standards. Mostly, I'm interested in elements that each can contribute to their own levels. So far, the feedback has been great.

To test this, we're going to need help from people on the forums to get some feedback to see if we're going in the right direction. If you or anyone in the forums want to help us out (and yes, this'll take a bit of time), just send a friend req. on PSN for EternityInBlack

On a side note... kinda tough taking camera grabs and playing the game heh

There are 2 real enemy types you see here: 1 being a soldier with a rifle that jumps and another that hides behind a box after firing 5 or so shots. The others are considered obstacles and I'll be handing them as prizes for the level should you beat it - once we get the level out that is.
