Animate a character made of material

Archive: 10 posts

I was wondering if it is possible to animate a character and give it the ability to jump and fight and do other actions instead of using a sackbot.2012-04-01 22:11:00

yes it's possible... using multiple overlapping images made out of sticker panel, some controllinators, and a few movers.2012-04-01 22:22:00

Not holograms

yes, i tried to work out a way of doing that but nothing worked how i wanted it to. try making your character in the different animated states and then use emit and destroy... i've seen it done but it's not as smooth as it could be. what we need really is a system that emulates stop frame animation. you would create your figure with joints and then move them a frame at a time. each frame would then be placed on a sequencer and bingo!

here's what i tried to do but couldn't quite make it work (well i gave up to be honest) you create a marionette with all the moving parts you require. on each joint of the marionette you place followers. then you take tags and place them (you would need two sets of tags for the legs (this is where it threw me) you place those tags in a sequence for the followers to follow (walking in this case) and then you use something (i used a selector) to turn each tag on one at a time. in theory it could work, but in my experiments sometimes the marionette would slide. i realised i needed more tags, but like i said, i gave it up as a bad job.

and don't forget to use a gyroscope... darn it, i'm going to have to try this again myself!

Technically, yes, but you have to manually do more logic to allow it to move (unless you're doing a top-down game which is MUCH easier)
see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPq1TsprxZA My top down character can swing his arms etc.

Side-to side, you can, but you have to be wary of collision of objects. I'd suggest doing arms out of sticker panel at the very least or you sometimes end up with broken characters, or getting stuck.

Edit: As the above said, emitting hologram attacks work too. I forgot to add that. Either way, just be careful of phyisical items hanging from the character.

Its hard, and can require painstaking mover, follower, or even Controllinator usage, but it's deffineatly worth it. Take a look at this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRKaeYFRYLc) if you want to know how cool it is to forget about sackbots in your levels sometimes. 2012-04-02 03:16:00

Yep, just glue a chunk of dark/light matter to the material objects. They can then be emitted in the same layer and space as each other, allowing you to create frame by frame animations out of materials.

I made a 1-layer animated Cloud Strife out of material before sticker panel made it redundant. I can upload it if you'd like an example.
