Sticky Situation

Archive: 16 posts

I need to stick a couple things together during gameplay, but it's complicated.
What I'm trying to do, put simply as possible:
The player moves the cardboard block around freely, then rotates the sponge square, and somehow the cardboard moves with the sponge, rotating around the sponge's axis.

What I did:
Square of holo in the same layer as the cardboard, a material tweaker on the holo set to "sticky" and activated when the holo rotates. I thought this would do the trick, using the holo like glue.

Problem: Sticky doesn't work on holo. Facepalm!

The important thing is for the cardboard to move around freely, then be rotated around the axis of the larger square, so two rotate as one.
Assuming I've made sense so far, any ideas on how to make this happen? Thanks in advance

this wouldn't happen to be for 3d cam rotation by any chance would it? 2012-03-29 10:48:00

You could possibly have the block connected to the sponge with a horizontal and vertical piston. The player "moves" the block by adjusting the pistons, but when not being moved the block will stay in the same position relative to the sponge.2012-03-29 19:56:00

You need a anti gravity tweaker, the cardboard will move if you put a motor bolt after you put the anti gravity tweaker on the sponge.2012-03-29 20:23:00

@WXB: Sorry, I don't really understand. If I bolt the cardboard to the sponge, then it can't move freely prior to rotation.

@Dr C: Yeah, I think that's the way to go. I thought I was being so clever with the holo idea.

@evret: Yes, it would

I thought I'd heard of using holo with a sticky tweaker as an ingame "glue" - thought it was something johnee said at the St Louis Community meet up. I went back and looked at the video where johnee shows story levels in create mode, but it wasn't in that vid. I really thought I remembered that and it was driving me crazy, so I looked at the raw footage (I edited those videos). Turns out it wasn't johnee, it was actually comphermc who mentioned sticky holo during the demo, but I left that out of the final cut. Well, at least I now know that I wasn't going mad and imagining things.

I'll probably use the pistons, unless anyone else has a really brill idea. But hey, wouldn't it be cool if you could make holo sticky? Or have some collision free glue material that can be activated with a switch?

Um... could followers be used to manipulate the objects, because they could lock the cube in like glue?

well that's the theory... no idea how it would work
Normally I'd consult Ev over this sort of thing, but since he has already posted, follow his instruction and you'll be in good hands XD

You know, last night I was thinking that somehow, that should work. I'm jut not sure how, but I'm heading into create mode to frustrate myself now

Maybe have a tag where you want the cube to follow, and when freely roaming around, the cardboard just follows the sponge (the main source of movement here), but when rotating, it follows and uses a rocket rotator? Your stickers or decorations (if any) will be rotated 90 degrees when the sponge is rotating, but you could then solve that problem by using sticker panel.2012-03-29 23:04:00

Couldn't you use angle sensors for this? Hum... sorry, I can't think about it. I spent too much time on Skyrim lately, LBP logic seems far.2012-03-29 23:12:00

@evret: Why didn't you mention your copyable level, silly?

@pivot: I hadn't thought about that, I'll play around.

Okay, so I may be the last person in LBP to take an interest in the 3D camera, I've just never had a reason to use it before.

I've copied the level from @evret, and another one from @mopkins - which has a more bare bones template. I may use one of those. I usually like to do everything myself, from scratch, but this is not time to be OCD about it. I just need this tech for a small part of a larger level, and I need to get on with making that larger level. I will of course give credit if I use anyone else's creation.
Thanks for all the help, everyone!

@pookachoo: Why didn't you mention it was for 3D cam rotation, silly?
while mine is still the best around that i have seen, it's also the hardest to understand, so if this is only for a small part of the level you're probably better off looking into mopkins version

Are you absolutely positive that the stickyness of a material tweaker doesn't work on Holo?

Because it takes some time (0.7s, I recall) for stickyness to take effect; it is not instant on activation. If you activate it the moment that the sponge starts rotating, it might as well turn out that it starts to become gluey after it has finished its rotation.

Yeah, I tried putting a sticky tweaker on holo without any switch, even tried it in play mode, and it doesn't stick. Oh well.2012-03-30 19:35:00

In all fairness it does kind of make sense... holograms by definition are just light and I'm pretty sure you can't glue that =p

but anyway, be sure to keep us posted on your status with this

Yeah, it does make sense, I just thought it might work since you can make holo grabbable - of course then you get long arms

While evret's cam does have better rotation, I'm having difficulty customizing the copyable level to suit my needs. In stripping away all the "extras" I end up breaking it, not sure why, but removing the lighting controls makes it impossible to enter the dcs.
mopkins' cam is a little sloppy on the rotation, but it's a blank template - with instructions, which makes it easier to use

Well, thanks for the suggestions, I won't post on this thread again; but if anyone takes an interest I've started a blog on the whole project: http://www.littlebignetwork.com/blog.php/8173-pookachoo

I wanted to make a robot once, and it had a unique tentacle system build with wires and hologram followers. The bot allowed you to shoot, aiming with the right stick, and it would emit a tentacle in two blocks, one which would stick to the robot and the other one which would move until it reached a wall, then the part stuck to the ship would follow the other one, working like a grapple hook. But yeah, got ruined since the holo couldn't stick. I know, it's dumb, I just needed to place the follower on the ship itself, but I thought it was cool to have a ship shoot something in itself to move...2012-04-03 00:04:00
