My first thumbs down...

Archive: 37 posts

OK! So I've just received my first thumbs down... pretty disappointed really!

I know you can't please everyone, but what seems to annoy me is that they have given no reason as to why they didn't like it. Also, I've looked at their profile and it seems they are in the habit of disliking levels!

If you're going to thumb down a level, at least give some reason so that creators can improve their creations.

No!... I don't agree with what they do... but i'll defend their right to do it...
people should never have to justify themselves for giving something as worthless as a happy/sad face.

as it is, this thread is not needed, thunmbs down is being removed in a future patch so you'll have no clue if people disliked your level or not. It's a shame, because some feedback was much more useful than no feedback.

Finally... looking at your lbp.me activity, you have given sad faces without giving a reason why in the past, so why does other people doing it to you bother you?

I feel you pain! Actually, I'm feeling a lot of people's pain right now.
I absolutely HATE level griefers, people who dislike level for reasons other than the level being bad; eg. anger at mm, the creator, they're a troll, or for reasons so inconsequential they make my head spin. One time, somebody disliked one of my movies, and her review was "wow dis lvl stinks like a monkeys butt just like u". What's almost as bad was the sack who actually disliked Sealed Fate. One of his reasons why he disliked was because "the game over screen was too long". That all pales in comparison with the sacks that disliked Starlight Isles. It was on the top of the highest rated pages, and I don't know why, but three sacks just went and disliked it, taking it off the highest rated! They didn't review it or anything, so I had no idea why. Maybe they were just trolls, or they were mad at the creator, or some stupid reason. It's stuff like this that makes me think that democracy is broken.
Okay, maybe not...

I didn't know that about the future patch!

I'm not saying they have to "justify" themselves, but rather than passing by and leaving a thumbs down. I just think a short comment would've been a polite thing to do.

Maybe, that's just me though! :star:

As Antikris so eloquently pointed out, the day will come when somebody boos your level, but then you will notice that they also hearted it or left a comment such as "nice level".

You'll feel so confused that your brain will melt into a puddle of grey jelly and you'll begin to doubt your own existence.

The 2nd guy who booed my Snake level, I kindly asked him why, his response was "k".

Receiving boos is part of LBP. Just deal with it.

Or the day when someone gives you a boo and says "Great level, but I'm booing it because I don't like it. Just my personal opinion". Must be a pretty unbiased guy.

Boos. They suck.
Don't worry though, it's only some well-needed opinion. Helpful most of the time, whether you like it or not.
However, there are times that it annoys the heck out of me; when someone just boos it and leaves it at that. Okay, so they booed it. Big deal. But the real annoyance is when I can't fix what was wrong if there was anything. They may have just hated it, which is fine with me, I don't really care, but at least give me a tip. I had this guy boo my level, and I asked him why. About three days later, he said there was one bug in the level. Never found it, and neither did anyone else. I urged him to give it another shot, but he never did. I really think you should TELL someone if there's a bug instead of just booing the level.
What is truly annoying is when people boo out of hate. Like people who boo YOUR level if you boo THEIR level (I admit, I used to be very tempted to do that, but I just felt bad if I thought of it). Or when people boo to try and hinder you. There was this guy who didn't like my level, and he didn't like many others' levels either. He said (and misspelled) mean things in his reviews, but not enough to get reported. So I spoke to him, and then he whales on my profile and leaves nasty, MEAN comments, then he boos a LOT of my levels. Like that. Boos aren't nice when they're for a bad purpose.
Yet, there is a constructive side to boos. Like critics for a movie. There are those who liked it and say it's perfect as-is, and those who didn't like it and state what they would have liked to see. Then the author can build off of that. I like that kind of criticism, the criticism that's actually FEEDBACK.

Sometimes you have to realize the person you are messaging to or booing your level might not be the age you think. Here is a post I made last year that still gives me a chuckle when I think about it. Hope you enjoy.

*** 8/31/2011 **
I don't mind if someone doesn't rate and at times, wish some would never rate at all.

What's that!?!?!?

Seriously! For example.. I have one level that has quite a few yays and hardly any boos. To be honest, I can't imagine anyone not liking the thing and getting a chuckle out of it even if they suck terribly at playing it. Anyway.. I got curious and just happened to do a bit of searching on one such naysayer and found a pic of them they recently took with their PS3eye.

http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/040bd77dcee60054883577b909f790805e501aa3.jpg (http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/040bd77dcee60054883577b909f790805e501aa3.jpg)

I got a good laugh out of that and hopefully puts things more in perspective that possibly those that don't rate or give you a frowny face, might just need their diaper changed or a nap. So like I say, those that are not rating might be a blessing in disguise. ..and always keep in mind that very young people are playing levels online and anything hard, regardless of your warnings, might play it and give it a boo. or a boo hoo hoo...

*** end of long lost ancient post ***

So like I say... you never know.. heck, they might have really liked the level, but just have no idea what those little things are that pop up.

As a creator, I don't let boo's affect the way I look at levels, I just assume that anyone who boo's my level doesn't understand what a good level is, even if it were to slap them straight across the face, and btw, I'am totally not exaggerating. Seriously, only people who care about the creator will give some advise as to some bugs in a level.

Keep this in mind: "LBP isn't only made up of Sackpeople, it's the puppeteers behind those sackpeople"

In other words, everybody's different, so don't assume everyone's going to look at your level in the same way, cause they're not, but create in your "style" of creating nevertheless.

As for receiving boos, it happens. I've messaged a couple of people who didn't like it, and left a review saying so, and they explained the problems clearly and were very friendly about it.

There no reason to get annoyed there always be players with high standards or dislikers, it really does not effect much your level since all levels gets dislikes, if you got 1/10 retio it means you level is very good everything beyond means its outstanding2012-03-29 16:06:00

From an oldish thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=66570-Conspiracy!&p=967711#post967711) complaining about cool pages/mm picks/whatever, hard to find because there is one every few weeks.

. We have made some changes to the game i think will help with numerous things, they are only the start, they will evolve further
coming in update 1.12 (probably that one anyways)
- You can choose to disable commenting on a level, or all your levels
- You can no longer Boo a level, nor see a level's Boo rating

Probably Coming later, or maybe at the same time, maybe.
- Disable comments on your profile
- Disable reviews on one or all levels
- Remove Boo ratings from reviews, from everywhere!

Well that sounds pretty meh to be honest. Disabling comments I'm borderline on, people should be able to take criticism, it helps you improve. Removing boos is slightly better, but if someone were to receive a load of boos, they would either rage, or do the proper thing and use it as a reason to look at it, see what isn't right and fix it. I can't see LBP levels getting any better because of this.

Thanks for providing source though, much appreciated

I do not think removing this many functions would be a good idea. People would shut out any criticism and leave only the possibility of not rating it or liking it. I think that will be abused. You know those videos on YouTube that look good, but are some kind of prank when you click on them? They disable the comments and ratings, leaving no evidence of it's quality. I think the same will happen on LBP. People will sugarcoat levels, and when you play them, they're copied or a H4H. Then you can't say anything. It'll turn LBP into a huge game of Minesweep. You never know what you'll get, and that goes for both positive and negative. I really hope they don't include this in another update. I wouldn't really mind disabling comments, because some people may be getting harassed in the comments section, but I would just leave it at that.

Well said, no matter what can be added to LBP, rest assured there will always be someone who's willing to abuse it. Good thing I'm able to see the lighter side of the community here on LBPC, or else I would probably go crazy over how horribly bad the community appears to be.

I don't care as much about boos as I used to. I don't respect them unless they give some reasonable explanation as to why they booed (which is rarely the case). I actually find it quite amusing when you look at the levels they like, and they're all that crap on the Cool pages, like those coppied MK levels.

I only really care about my yays/hearts : plays ratio. I can be a bit of a stats freak at times. My most recent level was at around 1:2 for yays : plays, and 1:3 for hearts : plays... but that appears to be slipping now. So if anyone wants to improve those ratios, to help ease my troubled mind, it would be very much appreciated.

Yeah I've done this but had no response yet.

Still, I'm quite happy with the response over-all. I've had 55 unique players of which 2 have BOOED! 26 have thumbed up and 13 have hearted. Plus a couple of players have given some nice comments...

"ga.y u made it were ur if u made ply alone against computer if u jump them they dont die u do"

...that was someone's explanation for booing my level...

Now after obviously spending hours trying to deduce what problem he was bringing to the surface, I finally figured out he was saying:

"If you play against the CPU, and jump a piece, your piece gets destroyed, and not the CPUs.

Now that's a HUGE problem. So I get all OCD and check over all the logic....everything looks fine...

I test the level over and over at least 20 times....everything is fine...

So either he discovered a very rare logic bug that NO ONE, not even myself after countless hours of testing, reported finding...or he made some crap up/hallucinated...

so the moral of this post is...some people rate down because they are just plain stupid.

You deserve a cookie just for working out what he meant, yet alone actually 'solve' the issue. I swear some people are playing a different level sometimes.

I've also been receiving a lot of bad reviews on my LBP1 levels recently. I know LBP2 screwed them up, but not as much as these people think it would appear. I made them LBP1 only, can't be bothered. I had one person say it was too long, which I take as a compliment.

you are retarted you dont have any directions the hardest level in the friecken world i HAVE A BETER LVL THEN YOU

So, this person's playing skills are too weak to complete my level and he feels that I should hold his hand and wipe his butt for him as he plays. He cannot even express his opinion articulately.

Yet, strangely he considers ME to be the "retard".

At least 75% of LBPs player community have not yet fully evolved from their roots as amoebic lifeforms. Anything they have to say about your level should be considered pretty much worthless and irrelevant.

Also remember that at least 75% of LBP's player community are 5 to 11 year olds, so you're probably right not to be surprised .

Hi. My name is Ungreth, I am 36 years old and I play video games designed for 12 year old kids. I spend all my money on special outfits so that I can dress up my sack doll all pretty. I am a very sad man with no life.

Please kick me if you see me in the street.

you might just want to lower that percentage a tad, you wouldn't want people thinking you are aloof or think you are superior
