Couple of newbie questions about decorating a level, and backgrounds.

Archive: 7 posts

Hi guys couple of questions from a fairly new creator here.

So I've been working on a new level for a couple of days now, I'd fiddled around a lot with stuff on LBP1 so it's not really my "first" level, and I am familiar with a lot of the logic and stuff but...

I'm having trouble thinking how to decorate the level. It's just a typical snow-themed temple kind of thing. I've been getting inspiration from "The Wilderness" level of LBP1 and also "Violet Sundown" by RacingCreed which I just think is phenomenal.

I've done things such as put simple trees in the background with some light matter holding them up, I have a few icicles hanging from the ceiling etc. There's an early section of my level with a wall of rock which I cut holes in to put in waterfalls and flowers. But the level just feels so... empty, compared to what I see other people doing.

I don't feel like any stickers fit my theme other than a couple of white flowers here and there. What kind of things do you populate your levels with to make them seem like less of endless corridors with a bit of stuff here and there? Most levels I play just seem beautifully joined with something decorative at every turn.

My second question is a lot more simple:

Do people generally use preset backgrounds for their levels or not?

When I checked "Violet Sundown" for it, there were what seemed to be black bonzai-looking trees on a purple background, which just fitted beautifully with the level - but I couldn't tell if this was a preset background or not, it wasn't one I had seen?

The "Wilderness" background from LBP1 would just go perfectly with my level. But I just feel kinda "cheap" by using it, but as far as I know there's no other way to decorate the background?

Thank you in advance for any replies, and for taking the time to read this wall of text if you've gotten up to here O.o

Newbie too on decorating but i think i can answer 2 of the least important questions. : D
It seems that RC in "Violet sundown" uses the Savanna background with a colored fog and/or maybe some other global lighting settings as well.

Sometimes it makes quite a difference the position you put your level (materials etc) relative to a given standard background. I.e. put it in the bottom of the yard background and you see grass and dense trees and leaves that will fit a forest theme. Put it high above and you only see the sky and the top leafs of a tree making it cool for a sky theme etc. A little experimenting with Savanna background by setting the fog too high and making it bright green may give a good dangerous alien planet environment and so on.

And of course there is a way to decorate the background by using the 3d layer (or background or extra layers) glitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij--bJxovSk).

Oh man, thank you so much for this feedback! It makes so much sense now, haha That means I'm gonna have to fly around the whole of the backgrounds to find the best part to fit my level, but that gives me so many more options about how to do things. Thanks man, really appreciate it

I had a couple of breakthroughs with my decorating last night too. Thought that if I shrink down my level a lot more, I'd need to decorate it less, and that worked wonders because there was just less space that needed filling with 'something'

Most of the time I use a preset background, and add to it using the extra layer glitch. I don't think it's "cheap" so long as you add your own touches, so it looks unique. If you aren't finding stickers and decorations to fit your level, you might try making your own decorative objects out of wafer thin material. For instance, make felt vines climbing up rocks; make icicles out of glass or freaky clouds.
You could also use Theck material in combination with wafer thin for more texture. Theck is the thickness of a checkpoint, and sits just in front of the wafer thin. You can get it from a few community levels if you do a search.

Thanks for that link to your level, I'll be sure to check it out tonight! I watched the video of the other guy explaining how it works, but I don't think he said how to actually get the layers in the first place

I was having a play around with wafer thin material last night actually, I added some nice flower stalks and stuff and it did make this whole wall of rock I was applying it to look a lot nicer. I just need to think of some more ideas now, but I guess that just comes with practice!

Thanks for the reply

I'm not too good at decorating, but, I found this thread helpful: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=68981-The-Ugly-Level-Experiment

Try and find a few tips in there, it could help you when you start getting into stickers and stuff

Thanks very much for that thread mate, it has been useful in giving me ideas of how to craft certain shapes and create certain materials and such - cheers for linking it! 2012-03-30 00:06:00
