Level theme ideas. anyone?

Archive: 8 posts

So I've been developing a level for a small time now, but I only have the gameplay, I'm completely stuck on where this gameplay will take place. would the lbp community help me think of theme ideas? thankyou!

also this would be a nice place for other people to get theme ideas, so maybe we could make a database.

Ideas so far

A labyrinth
Water level
An action packed one ( Like the MGS Pack )
Spooky
Heaven
City
deep space
a desert
the bottom of a dark ocean
theme park
vibrating skyscraper city
tropical beach
post-apocalyptic cityscape
western
jungle
based around music
based around a set of materials/color scheme

Thanks to everyone contributing!

The themes of my levels usually surface in a pretty "natural" way depending on the content of the level itself

Do you have any particular "hook" in the level you are making?

Why are you running out of ideas? There's many things you could create.
Oh, so you're asking, eh? Alright, I'm sorry about that one.

Why not try :
A labyrinth themed one or
Water level or
An action packed one ( Like the MGS Pack ) or
Spooky themed or
Heaven themed or
City
..... And there's more if you would ask!
Also as Slaeden-Bob said, do you have a "hook" in this level you're creating? Try adding a storyline to it.

Make sure you are enjoying what you are doing.

Be sure to play the level you created before you publish it.
If you're done, please share it if you really took everyones'/someone's advice, and I would like to check it out.

So I've been developing a level for a small time now, but I only have the gameplay, I'm completely stuck on where this gameplay will take place.

What type of emotions would you like to bring across? What locations or environments do you associate with those emotions?

I.e.: loneliness and desertion can take place in deep space, a desert, the bottom of a dark ocean. Excitement, wonderment and plain fun can take place in a theme park, a vibrating skyscraper city. Peace, relaxation and laziness can take place on a tropical beach. Desperation and panic can be located in a post-apocalyptic cityscape.

First thing that springs to mind is a Spooky level... I can see some great camera scenes in a Spooky Theme. Quick zooms with creepy sound effects, shaky cameras etc. Flickering lights to create a creepy atmosphere...

The possibilities are endless!

hmm.. hook. I suppose seeing as how the levels game-play is puzzling and involves a lot of interacting with the environment I guess things like Labs and stuff would work. but then giving it a different edge might make it more interesting.2012-03-27 16:41:00

hmmmmm, now this is a thinker. How about a western theme or a jungle one. you never know unless you try. I think a mini game would fit perfectly2012-03-28 03:48:00

Well if its a platformer, and it sounds like it most likely is, use something simple. Simple visuals are ok, not great, but they pass. If you go for something more advanced or realistic, and it turns out looking bad, your level will look a lot worse. Just stick to 2 materials on the inside with one for the outside, and add some decorations too. Also, picking out a nice music track can help you out, because the music is often based around themes, and you can build your level based on that.2012-03-28 04:18:00
