Help creating a rising door...

Archive: 11 posts

Ok, I'm currently making a level, and I'm stuck.

I'm trying to create a rising door. Ya know, one that once you activate a switch the piston rises it up and it's open. Well... I can't get it to work. I want it to behave so when you step on the switch(the red switch BTW), it opens and stays open. However, currently it's only staying open while I'm on the switch. When you get off it comes back down.

I really need help with this. I know it's a dumb question but I've never attempted this. I want the door to be permanently opened, and not come down at all once the switch is activated. So any help is appreciated.

The way I'ddo this is -

Have a rectangle of dark matter somewhere out of view. Hollow it out completely, and stick a lump dissolve material in there, but leave enough room for a small lump of wood. Attach a magnetic key to the wood, and put the magnetic key switch below the dissolve on the dark matter. Adjust the range of the switch so that it willonly detect the magnetic key once the dissolve material has dissolved. Then, change the setting on the magnetic switch to directional, and attach it to whatever is controlling the door ( be it a piston, or a winch). Then, attach the button to the dissolve material.

When you stand on the button, it will dissolve the dissolve material, causing the wood to fall, meaning the magnetic key is in range, which means that the door is activated, and will stay in whatever direction you set it to (invert on or off)

...............

That's just complicated enough to work!! I have to try this out.

However, when you say stick a piece of dark matter somewhere out of view, where would be the best place to put it? The opening door is in a cave/lab thing....(inorite?). I made a rectangular hole above where I wanted the door to be(so the door rises into the hole. Do I enlarge the hole and put the dark matter inside there?

The dark matter can be completely out of sight, no one wants to see it. YOu can make it 20000 miles away from the door, it doesn't matter. Just make it out of sight.2009-01-01 23:36:00

Yeah, anywhere mate. The wires can stretch to infinity, and I only said dark matter because it doesn't need support to stay in the air. It's the best thing for out of sight switches and what have you

Ah, well I think I got this down. Working on it now. Will report back and say if it works or not. It should though. Thanks!

EDIT: Worked!! Thanks so much! At first however the door was open, and when the switch activated it shut. I fixed that though by checking the backwards option on the piston.

Permanent switches are a standard tool, I recommend saving one as an object, you will use them all the time.

I probably should save it. Thanks for the tip. Any other standard tools that are useful? I know about 'or' switches and 'and' switches. Anything else?2009-01-02 04:04:00

I've made two tutorial levels now. One deals with this issue, permanent switches, the other talks about another interesting trick with monsters and keys.

I'm building a 3rd one about magic mouths, and likely more will follow.

The links for them are in my signature.
