Confused New Creator

Archive: 7 posts

Hello Sackfolk

I've gotten back into LittleBigPlanet 1&2 after a hiatus because of being bed ridden following illness. There is some truly wonderful user created content to be found in the LBP Community, and whilst I realise I don't have the same amazing ingenuity and imagination, I would really like to be able to complete a user level andw publish it.

I have a theme in my head, and it's a kind of booby-trapped platformer, but I have a question, and I think, or at least hope it's a simple one!

As it is my first full attempt, would it be better to keep things on just a couple of planes, rather than all three? I've noticed that some really good levels just use one plane, but I put this down to the user's adeptness more than anything else.

I realise to LBP Creator Veterans it might seem a bit of a daft question, but it will influence the entire structure of my level and any advice would really gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,

Miffytherabbit

LIES!

first step, believe in yourself

but in all seriousness it's really up to you. A level of any depth can be equally successful. I find from experience that 1 layer will allow for easier to build and sometimes better gameplay. 1 layer is especially useful if the level is very linear or you want to reserve 2 layers purely for details and decoration. Use 2 or 3 layers if you want to build multiple paths easier or want to provide a sense of exploration.

If I were to attempt the level (judging by the description you gave) I would personally stick to 1 layer. Just remember to build it in the front layer so players cannot jump out of the level.

Hope this helps in some way.

I recommend 1 layer to people who are new or haven't played in a while. It helps keep the gameplay simple. But, if you want to challenge yourself, use all 3 layers to give more creativity and complexity to your platforming.. Sometimes it helps the level look more exciting. I agree with David too, but 1 layer gameplay can sometimes get boring, depending on what the gameplay is. Good luck! 2012-03-24 21:54:00

I'd say try to use at least two layers on-and-off throughout the level. If your level require no layer-switching, it will most likely become very boring. Just find a way to make it flow and keep the player interested. You may just have to experiment to find a comfortable balance for yourself.2012-03-24 23:52:00

1-2 depths is fine.

Don't be frustrated if your first level isn't the masterpieces you envisioned. Each level you build is another step of learning how to build levels.

Just don't quit. Keep going. And never be afraid to ask for advice.

Keep us up to date on how its going.

As CYMBOL says, don't stop, keep creating and you'll get better and build more confidence. Everyone has their niche (play a few levels of known creators and you'll notice), you just gotta find it.

What I'd like to add to the advice pool is this: don't stare at the screen and expect the inspiration to come; often it doesn't work that way. Often you get the best of ideas as you do other things and suddenly realize "Hey, I didn't think of it this way before but this would be a great idea for a level!". Write ideas down if you have moments like these.

Thanks so much for everyone's advice, it was really kind of you all to reply with some really useful advice. It's not so much that I'm short of ideas, it's just there is so much choice, and I'm so indecisive, I felt that I needed to channel things a bit because all my levels never get finished and end up being nonsensical. I'll try limiting myself to a couple of layers at most and restrict the amount of materials I use so things don't look so messy.

Thank you so much folks - I really appreciate it.

Bestest wishes,

Miffyrabbit ^_^
