Private Eye part 1: The Diner (Screenshots)(Video)

Archive: 43 posts

Mrs. Sackson was murdered and you are the perfect man for the job of finding out who did it. You are about to leave your office when you receive a call from the lady at the diner. She tells you that there is a suspicious looking character hanging out around the diner, so you head over there to check things out. This is based on those old detective movies, so naturally it's in black and white. I placed four clues throughout the level, and when you find a clue your score at the end of the level will be higher than if you just ran through the level. For some reason the screen shots came out in color. Oh well.

That's weird, how did the screenshots come out in colour if you made it black and white? :

I'll check this level out, it looks cool

It's a mystery ain't it?

Anyways, about to play the level right now, I'll give you feedback when I'm done. I have no levels I want feedback for soo yeah...
--------------------
Okay, just finished the level. I'll post my thoughts.

The good;

-The level was executed perfectly to match the music, the theme, the idea of having it black and white was awesome, and there wasn't any moments where I couldn't see where I was going.

-I loved the story you had, I don't know if I found all the clues but I found 3 hidden spots and I found his murder weapon.

-You went all out on detail, you had the level match any murder cases perfectly, everything from the billboard signs, to the street lights. It was really nice, and I applaud you for your work.

Some suggestions;

- Okay, since this is an intro to an upcoming series, I can ignore the fact that there wasn't much platforming, the only hazard in the level was where the lady was throwing her tv and lamp out the window. ( nice touch by the way )

- You should do something like how Linque has his level set up in Treetop Escape. Have it so each clue lights up a light at the end near the scoreboard, telling the player how many clues he missed or if he found them all. A small but great addition.

- A few of your speech bubbles had some grammar issues, you probably missed it but the speech bubble where it says and I quote " So I headed off to the diner. Mabye on the way i would find some clues."

I'm not sure if you had any others but it's really a small fix but it makes it look so much more professional, might just want to give the text a re-run.

Overall though, I really liked the level, even if it was just an intro and didn't have much platforming. It makes sense since you kind of want to build up the story. Good stuff, It's a really nice level.
5 Stars and hearted, you the creator as well. Congrats

By the way, I just added a few enemies to up the platforming a little.

I also added the clue lights that Whaaaaale suggested.

My thoughts as I go through the level:

- Looks really cool.

- Wow! Really! The aesthetics are great! Though the car could use some work.

- The cat is really really hard to jump on the brain and not die. You might consider moving the ears back a bit, maybe?

- Pretty fun level, but all together too short. Though finding all the clues does add great replay value.

A few of your speech bubbles had some grammar issues, you probably missed it but the speech bubble where it says and I quote " So I headed off to the diner. Mabye on the way i would find some clues."

Those aren't grammatical errors, they're punctuation errors.

BTW, awesome level. I'll give you detailed feedback when we play.

Amazing level, I even dressed up for it. The level did have a very classic mystery feel to it, but there were some things that I felt could have been better.

The desk, chair, fan [nice touch], and book case at the beginning, if you're going to make everything big, make everything big. The beds, trash cans, tables, stools, booths were normal sized [compared to Sackboy]. I just felt like I had walked into "It's a Small World."

The car driving backwards. Maybe you could just have it start driving forward when you walk down the stairs and park where it's needed. Not a big issue, but I first saw it driving backwards, and I was like "wat."

You should decorate the scoreboard at the end.

Rated 5 & hearted, anticipating part 2.

Hi Sonic5411,

I had the chance to play your level last night and i would like to say you that it is one of the most visually impressive level i saw so far. I detail why:

PROS:

- Use of N&B: It fit perfectly with the theme and the design of your level. The first time i tested the N&B effect on one of my level, i thought it was a bad N&B effect. In fact, i now thought it was simply unfitting with my theme. You show me here that this filter is a very good one. It give a very unique style to your level.
- Custom content: there is a lot of custom content with a lot of details in your level. I loved a lot the desk of the start. I liked your dogs so.
- Your game design is very well done. For exemple, your building at the end of the level is complex, but you easily find your way.

SUGGESTIONS:
- Lenght of the level: I think your level is very short. I understood you certainly have in project to buil a serie of level. However, i prefer when levels are a little more long, even in a serie (there is just less levels in the serie).
- Your cat was hard to kill.
- The car at the start of the level: How can you construct a so beautiful scene in N&B in the desk and put this (sorry for the term, but i really think it is out of scope of your level) UGLY CAR? It is clearly in need of reshaping and details.

Finally, i was sixth on the scoreboard, and i gave your level 5 stars, hearted and tagged "Splendid". Great work!
Your level was a great time of play and i look forward to your next production.

I am going to address the length thing. I would have loved to make it way longer because I myself love long levels, but because of all the detail in this level, the thermometer would only allow what I have. It is FULL!!

About the car. It is very ugly. I made it at the end of production on this level and got lazy. That was my mistake, and I am going to fix it today.

I don't know when you played it, but I did fix the cats, and they are much better now.

I am glad all of you guys like it so much, and I love the feedback. I am taking everything you tell me to heart, so just so you know: I am listening. :hero:

In the future tell me if you want feedback on your levels because I don't know which of you even have levels.

Thanks.

Loved it man. The look was perfect and the music that accompanied it was even more perfect. Your attention to detail was great, ranging from your lamps, to the dumpsters, to the look of your buildings. Also I loved the girlfriend/wife throwing stuff out of the window and especially liked your cats and dogs haha. Suggestions:

-yeah your already fixing this, but the car was really lame. Although I really liked how you implemented it.

-As aformentioned, we need some sort of indicator on how many clues we've discovered at the end of the level.

- I had no idea how to get the bubbles in the warehouse. But now that I think about it, it's probably a sticker switch isnt it? lol

- in the secret passage with the cat that goes towards the murder weapon, you can jump a little to high (out a window?) and land in some gas. It was kind of annoying trying to kill the cat and then promptly find yourself flying out the window into some random gas. Kind of seemed out of place, but it's your call on this part.

So yeah, overall it was really great If you'd like to give feedback on a level, I suggest you check out my Sin City (Final Version) level. It uses a somewhat similar colour and kind of has the same feel as your level (sorta). The link to the thread can be found below.

Bravo!

I agree, a very cool level; loved the noir theme and the way you put it together.

Is there something out that window in the upstairs bedroom, where the cat drops down? I tried quite a few times to go up the steps and get those bubbles, but every time I jumped, instead of going up I went flying out into the gas (that automatic level change jump thing the game does was really annoying).

5 stars and hearted, (really, really liked The Final Frontier too).

Keep it up!

This is a very cleverly done level. Though I killed myself on the darn knife.

The board with clue lights at the end is an excellent touch. Do you want it to be a mystery how many clues there are? I found four, but wasn't sure if I should keep searching. Regardless, the idea of platforming play to find clues is excellent, and I would like some more, please!

The way you disguised the scoreboard at the end was great, too.

How about having key to the next level given when you find a minimum number of clues?

There are 4, as there are 4 lights total. Those ones you missed, the lights won't light up.

Played this this morning and I was pretty stunned! brilliant level!
I've never properly reviewed a level so I'll try my best

Good
I loved the look of the level, you have clearly spent a lot of time on the appearance and by heck it's paid off.

As insignificant as it may seem, I loved the intro in the box. That tiny little introduction helps get you started into the level. Instead of hurling them straight into the office you're giving them a chance to get to grips with the plot, with no visual distractions.

Favourite part in the level was the woman throwing the objects out of the window (something you could maybe add - them landing on a crying sackboy?). That was a great way to squeeze in some danger without it looking completely out of place, it fitted perfectly.

Great storyline, didn't sound tacky and added another aspect of likeability to the level

Not so good

I found that the dogs and cats were a bit of a strange choice of enemy.. does he have bad alergies or something?
It would've been better to have seen some more appropriate enemies (but after saying that, I can't think of any, so I'd suffice with the animals ^^)

The stairs got a bit repetitive (not much). I think it would've added another dimension to the level if you'd made a subtle twist like, something blocking the stairway so you have to take the lift half way, maybe just something to split it up.
(I made a set of outer stairwells a while back and havn't found a use for them yet [pretty good quality though if I say so myself]. They'd be perfect for your level! If you wanna check them out and maybe use them, just ask and I'll send them to you).

This is gona sound really petty but I don't like how the knife kills you xD It's not exactly a great reward for finding a clue is it? ^^ I reckon you should maybe put an invisible box around it? (use dark matter at the minimum size).

Overall
That's all i can think of really! You did a good job of hiding the clues, seeing I only found 4 ^^
Overall it's a brilliant level, and I look forward to the next chapter!

[I also had a look at your Sonic level and it annoyed me how you couldn't kill the crab when it was on the hill]

Happy creating!

I just checked your level out, its great. Heres my thoughts

Pros

+ Level looks great in black and white. It really sets the tone
+ All the materials and detail fit perfectly, the boarded up houses etc. All very good
+ Excellently designed
+ Loved the washing line swing!
+ The extra clues where a good touch
+ Original enemies that fit the level.

Cons

- It was short, the only thing really
- Could do with more puzzles, the tramp and money was great. But the rest of the clues where just hidden areas

I really enjoyed this level. It was well thought out and built to this purpose. The black and white added to the immersion. I laughed at the enemy dogs chasing the cats and the woman throwing the TV from the window.

Very good job.

**** and "splendid" tag left in game. Hearted

Try my From Siberia With Love Pt.1:Infiltrate please, theres a thread here..

i played this level a little bit ago, and i got 2 say, it's definetly one of my top black and white themed levels, the old look to and old place made it look real good, and it felt real sherlock homesish lol, and it was a level where you more tried 2 find out something which reach the goal, which was cool in my books

only thing i didn't like was the knife on the roof, it made me think that since it was evidence of something i needed it so i tried taking it with me and guess what? dead lol, but still overall a great level, 4/5

and for feedback u should do the level i have a link for in my signature, Holan Wars, thanks

I can't even begin to explain how much I loved this level...I love the noir setting (very well done, nice choice of music, the architecture and stage dressing fits together well)
The searching for the clues is also a brilliant idea, especially because it's only a short level.
In some ways I liked that it was short, because it left me wanting more, and it didn't become too stale.
Only minor niggle with it is that there's no properly structured story, but, as I said, it's only a minor concern, as there's enough story to carry the player through the level
5 stars, hearted both you and the level, can't wait to see more!

Private Eye: The Diner
PSN: Super_Sonic5411

Gameplay (6.5/10):
This level was all about story and looks. The atmosphere is great and the story is driven off the deep feeling the level?s ambience instills in the player. It's pretty awesome when you fall from the intro into a private detective office and that soulful music plays. There are some great platforming areas through out and basic but creative user created enemies. There is some humor now and then, with a woman throwing her cheating husband?s stuff out the window. A pretty fun moment with cars driving along the street, a decent x2 area ? and a bunch of hidden areas and a score card of sorts at the end of the level to keep track of how many of these areas you found. There wasn?t anything ground breaking, just a solid level that has a deep interesting story that gets cut short and ends too soon. This score would be a lot higher if the story went somewhere towards the end. Especially if there was a boss fight? even if he runs away after you beat him to continue to another level, you should be able to confront the bad guy in some way at the end. Gameplay gets 6.5/10.

Looks (9/10):
This level is beautiful. The creator took his time from beginning to end with details. It's all in the details and the sultry ambiance of a black and white detective movie. There is an awesome zip line that uses pants on a clothes line in one part. The detail in the street is amazing, and inside in the rooms just looks like it took forever. There is even some sweet artistry in the cars that drive by, and the street lights. My only gripe is that those same details are lacking in the Diner of all places. Looks get 9/10

Other Stuff (8/10):
Level length is pretty short, high creativity marks for the details, custom bad guys, and multiple paths. Replay value is high because of all the hidden areas, and it's just impressive from beginning to end how cool and hip it feels. 8/10 for the intangibles.

Overall (7.8/10)weighted average)
Great level ? I recommend it anyone really. If you like black and white old school hip detective flicks, then you will LOVE this level. The gameplay falls a bit short with no climax, and the level is a bit short ? but there isn?t enough I can say about the details put into the looks. Great job ? 7.8/10

Feedback:
-Beautiful look, perfect for the genre. Great job here, especially in the details
-First area, the whole floor should dissolve, or put invisible walls up so the player can?t walk around and not notice the small area dissolved and then won?t fall and end up just walking around going huh?
-Maybe have a little more intro than just ? come down here there?s someone suspicious ? There is a talking tool from Maraz_Matari that let?s you set up to 8 talking mouths at a time, which would be awesome in some spots here.
-Wish there was a tunnel or bridge blocking the view of the cars spawning. It kind of cheapens the level when you see them come out of no where.
-Use the enemy dots in the tools menu (little white glowy dots that stop monster brains) to restrain your dogs and cats, not light poles like the first dog, if you walk past it on the street it get to the street light and breaks itself.
-The bum is hard to see maybe have a light in the fire to light him up a little.
-AWESOME clothes line ? very creative pants for a zip line.
-The diner needs more detail! That?s the name of the level, and it's a bit bland. Make the bar a thin layer, and hide some bubbles behind it, or add like some pies and milk shakes or like a kitchen in the background. There is SO much detail through out the level, but not at the diner!
-When you go up the stairs and out the bedroom window? you can fall to the end of the level at the bottom and top of the first flight of stairs. Add some really thin dark matter for an invisible wall to stop the player from falling here.
-The level/story seem like they got cut off! And I am in need of a boss fight! The user created enemies are always great to see, but it leaves you wanting more.
