How do Paint Switches work?

Archive: 8 posts

Okay, I tried to connect a Paint Switch to a piston. It didn't work. I tried to connect it to an explosive. It didn't work. So basically, it wasn't connecting to anything. I changed the type of output (one shot, directional etc.) but it didn't change anything.

So how exactly do you use Paint Switches?

AFAIK I can only use them on protected brains and dissolve material 2009-01-01 18:11:00

Hm, that's weird. I could've sworn MM used it on other materials in their Metal Gear Solid themed levels...2009-01-01 18:22:00

What did you put the switch on?2009-01-01 18:46:00

That's odd. I'm right here in my level and a paint switch is connected one shot to a flipper piston. I can connect it to anything else with on/off directional like any other switch.. Maybe you had a one shot piston and tried to attach a directional paint switch to it? Because that doesn't work. Directional to explosive also doesn't connect. Maybe you just forgot to change the settings?
Can't think of other causes. it really should work like any other switch.

I put the switch on a rectangular piece of red VR Material.

*sigh*

I guess it's only me then. This is starting to tick me off >=|

I'm guessing here without further testing, but I suspect paint swithes just don't work as an "on/off" for regular devices, it only works on the "One shot" setting for pistons that have "flipper motion" turned to "on".

I think the "on/off" might be there as it's the only thing that will trigger dissolve. If it was like a normal "on/off" switch, people could hit it multiple times and everything would stutter or turn off accidently, which is not ideal.

Perhaps either change the explosive to disolve, or have the paint switch trigger a dissolve that has a magnetic key on it. Then have a mag switch inverted and on/off connected to the explosive. You could make this kind of small and it should work I think. You don't even have to have the disolve or mag key on screen, it could be on the other side of the level for all the difference it does.

It does work as on/off or any other setting, just like any switch. I have on mounted to a metal block, set to on/off and hooked it to explosives, a motor, a piston, etc.. I have it set to 3 shots to activate and after three shots the explosives exploded, the motor ran, the piston activated, etc..

Are you sure your hooking the wire up to the device ? I know thats a stupid question but I have noticed that the wires on this switch are right behind it and when you mount it to something they are actually hidden in the material. I usually have to set mine out on the edge of an object to access the wire, then move it back after hooking the wire to whatever device it will operate.
