Does Anyone Like Voice Acting In Levels?

Archive: 12 posts

I have never fully completed a Zelda game, but for some reason, Link just seems so much cooler than other protagonist out there. I dont know, maybe its his sexy dwarf hat blending in nicely with his absurdly long dagger-shaped ears. Or maybe its because he can get any girl he wants to, but he doesnt...because he rescues the same girl..in every game.

I think theres more to it than that. I noticed...Link never talks.

One would question the potential effect that giving voices to previously silent characters, ruins experiences in games and movies. I can think of plenty of movies that were based off books and I would just cringe whenever they opened up their mouths and spoke. Heck, even games such as Kingdom hearts, featured characters from previous FF games, and it didnt go so well. ( VIVI I AM LOOKIN AT YOU!)

Whaa!?

Of course, I can probably think of just as many games that did Voice acting right. So I was wondering just how many people use it in their levels, and how many dont like voice acting in LBP stages. It certainty does give the characters more animation because thier mouths are moving, but Idk...I cant think of a good level where Voice Acting was particularly more effective than silence. Although, I havent played many levels...

It 100% depends on the game and in what circumstance during the game.

For instance, Persona 4 nails it! Some instances (the important parts ) there is Voice acting, but in other non-important circumstances (non-important parts) there isn't voice acting.

It truly depends.
If I were you I'd beta test 2 versions. One w/ Voice acting an another without voice acting. Idk...

I have used voice acting in one of my levels, but I also had what was said in a speech bubble so that if it were difficult to understand, it could still be read.
The voices were for NPCs that were not sackbots. I think that, unless done well, sackbots shouldn't talk. It kind of takes away the charm. However, there are many levels with voice acting bots that I did thoroughly enjoy. So it all really depends on how well it is executed.

Outside of story mode i can honestly say I hate voice acting on LBP. i could go on and on why i find it bad. but i won't as it don't really matter and i don't like to rage about things to much. but one of the reasons is they sound like they are talking in a jar, another reason is almost no LBP player can do a truly good job at voice acting sense almost no LBP creator are a real voice actor. i mean i can understand why they'd want to try... but in the end it just makes me feel like my ears are bleeding. >.> ... maybe if LBP had a far better way to record sounds then maybe i'd give voice acting in LBP a small bit more of a chance. but as it is i don't like it one bit. but everyone is free to like and do what they want. you won't see me trying to hold anyone back from having fun~ but yeah... i think about over 70% of the time i like games they don't have voice acting like the classic sonic games. *mew2012-03-22 12:41:00

Hmmm this is pretty enlightening actually. Maybe it does just depend on the game, because I cant imagine something like say Mass Effect, without voice acting, but at the same time, I dread the day sonic ever uttered a word. 2012-03-22 23:27:00

though the sonic characters did have cool voices in their old animated cartoon series in the 90s. but most of the new voices are not as good as those were. *mew

fumetsusozo-Have you played the Printz Diaries series by Rialrees? Sometimes I just click on random things over and over again just for the joy of hearing the voice actors talk. Heck, I sometimes even listen to My Baby Just Cares For Me while I'm creating, just because Rialrees voice is so addictive.
Oh and Rpg Maker-if Chrono Chysalis is to feature original characters, which I think it will, then you won't have to worry about voice acting ruing the previously silent characters, because none of your characters would be previous!
I like a_mailbox's idea, to have both voice acting and text. That's what I did in one of my movies, What Happens When Herbert Higginbotham Drinks Too Much Red Bull, because I couldn't do an accurate impression of the story characters. You could do that if you have voice acting constraints.
Also, I could add some tips on voice acting. If you have to voice many characters, it's recommended you don't use the voice changer, because it makes your voice sound unnatural. Only use if you have to, like if you have to voice 6 individual characters in the same movie (I seriously had to do that once.) Especially avoid making it higher, because then it sounds very annoying. I think they used the voice changer for Professor V in Aeon Quest...which didn't go so well. Oh...if you don't have a high quality recording device, your recordings are going to sound bad. Try getting other people to voice for you.
For the record, Sonic's voice in Colors and Generations is significantly less annoying than in the earlier games where he voice acting.

I'm pretty sure i'm free to dislike what i want to dislike. and since i was not sure if i ever played Printz Diaries or not, i made sure to check it out before replying. i have to say it was a nice level and and a ok job at voice acting but however, it still sounds like they are taking in a jar, that fact made me have a hard time enjoying it whatsoever.

And as for newer sonic games... Have you heard Cream the rabbit's voice actor? it still sounds like a 40 your old woman trying to do a kids voice. overall the video game sonic voices are much better then they used to be, but still are not very great at all. and i still have to make sure to put the voices in Japanese first before playing.

I said the old 90s animated cartoon series. not the horribly dubbed 90s movie. *mew

And before the subject changes, they actually tried to give link a voice in a Legend of Zelda TV show.

The show did not last long.

It kinda just depends on the game/level type and quality. If it's a plot based level, Voice acting can help set the mood so long as done well, and if it's more casual/action/etc., it's not really required.

In ideal situations, voice acting makes situations more lively and interesting. For instance, Tales of Vesperia skits (those optional dialogues with the facial icons) were more appealing to me than Tales of the Abyss' because they were completely voiced when localised to English, unlike Abyss' unvoiced dialogue.

Make sure it's done right though. I'm pretty sure we know several atrocities already (Arc Rise, Chaos Wars, some parts of voiced FFs, etc.), so really, just avoid becoming like this:

There's good voice acting and there's bad voice acting...

And then there's this guy.

On a serious note, I don't mind voice acting as long as the quality is pretty good, but also if the voice acting seems necessary. Rpg's such as Blue Dragon are an example of this. During important cutscenes there is full on voice acting, however during small points like "hey we need a key to get through this door", it is a simple speech bubble. I think voice acting is fine if you can find a balance like that. Same applies to littlebigplanet. If you decide to have voice acting in a level (or an rpg in your case), it doesn't mean you can't have standard speech bubbles/subtitles as well.
