[The Ugly Level Experiment]
Archive: 13 posts
Hi folks, let me tell you something about the current german LBP community project. We want to see and show how a design can massively change a level and its whole playing experience. I have created a kind of "raw" level by using only the crude story-objects from MM. The challenge is to transform, or let's say re-design this objects and the fore- and backgrounds with as less changes from the original Gameplay and Obstacles as possible. Feel free to participate, send me a PM and i will add your Level to the Hub. I would be delighted if you make a Step-by-Step Blog how you redesigned it! Everybody has his or her own style and tricks we all can learn something new if we watch others while they work Here is the Hub, with the "raw"-Level and some redesigned Levels http://i3.lbp.me/img/bl/ff3d478c0330b2c8cc90905298005f02f09bbb37.png (http://lbp.me/v/ev44tb) We have already some really good Step-by-Step Blogs, I'll try to post them weekly over here Forest by t567ui Hello folks. Now i've startet transforming [oder: re-designing] this level. The idea for this theme sneaked into my brain while playing Fallout. As I walked through the monochrome looking badlands suddenly i felt warmly hugged by realizing a bright oasis. This experience has given me a go for my design. http://if.lbp.me/img/ft/7ef0663054a9cbef65958b966f236ed35ff5b739.jpg Have a look on this magnificent claim of earth with its beautifully monotone colours. What a shame that i have to destroy it. :smileyvery-happy: http://i9.lbp.me/img/ft/349527753bcb72e1caf2f3d66d2a9e7df4988982.jpg First of all we are in need of some grass. http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/23c8855952e10eed563b8c1a92457f61c6439b01.jpg Second we need a little more green. What's about a nice tree made of some cloud objects (edited with some stickers). The LEDs gives us some beautiful light effects and are invisible in the game. http://ia.lbp.me/img/ft/b6a9e5f6beb79a5853fc77d6c99aff8a70f360cb.jpg I thought by myself that I somehow have to re-design this column, so I've changed the material into something more interesting and have added a waterfall with the same material. http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/cf7a2d48c345784240ebbfc23cfa7e6cc20f0b21.jpg So far so good. It's time to add a few "treeclouds" and create the first background decorations by using the sticker material. http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/67e2dc50532f25aaf88ca6dd0ea0d0483fe67c31.jpg Further I've placed a few more LED lights in various colors for some light effects. And some more stickers. http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/7b6fa6fe51424d3c2de91aa18d964598459386cb.jpg Now putting a "privacy protection screen" at the stairs and placing some unimportant sticker around. ... Now you maybe ask yourself "What the heck is with the LEDs?" Well if we now switching the light off... http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/390567e135f7de3f488adf93edfc544291a670a8.jpg http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/4fedf87002db63372842b4615924716e4803b955.jpg http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/0708139ef8185c438820f52f0130d09321d37295.jpg The whole re-design lasted 30 minutes and is quite handsome ... FYI: I have no video lags and overall this design tooks only 1 1/2parts of the thermo (only because I used many materials for the first time) | 2012-03-21 01:58:00 Author: Dhana777 Posts: 122 |
Thats a great idea. Giving people foundation to launch their creativity is great. Especially when you don't give them an entire level! | 2012-03-21 02:52:00 Author: grayspence Posts: 1990 |
I just saw this the other day, I think over at the official forums. This is great! I can't wait to see more. | 2012-03-21 02:55:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Greek Temple Before I start here with my step-by-step report, I would like to point out that I am not a designer God and my buildings are not Thermo-saving I'll try to change as little as possible from the gameplay and the basic structure of the original Level to show how a little Design can spice up such an ugly Level. If you build or decorate a Level you should choose a Theme ( I choosed greek Temple) I searched some reference Pictures via google. http://www.griechenland-urlaub-reisen.de/athen/akropolis.jpg Now lets start the transformation: http://i1.lbp.me/img/fs/15111f3511c078780e8129390106309b70ebd850.jpg http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/2f701f73bce226b11a8e7f820b8486fe9909fd9f.jpg build a basic column (with grid) http://i9.lbp.me/img/ft/5a9351a4cc85a7a375b4ba27eccfb88ba0ce672d.jpg This thin columns looks much better in grey concrete http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/8e59bd18429cbca50ee41c229f3e443f69bf5887.jpg The same column, just duplicated and nice arranged (Backwall turned into smooth glass) http://i3.lbp.me/img/ft/2937faead41adbcccce3b708c02a4ddbca57acd5.jpg turn the Roof into concrete too ( Sponge turned into Red Wicker ) http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/2be6ddd6efc460fbc23cca65f5d54770e105a1e3.jpg Take a Triangle and make the Tip lower, add more columns A little Hint: Keep the columns and the roof in your goodies Bag, you'll need them later :smileywink: If you like you can take a sneak peak at some of the finished Levels http://i3.lbp.me/img/bl/01389ba2c5cb2ec5f01ee50ff72c9c7215a10b95.png (http://lbp.me/v/7bhzpy) Ugly Level Experiment by muemmilein http://ia.lbp.me/img/bl/22a357ff7df90fdd77c793d8b0d802bfaa611032.png (http://lbp.me/v/ept59c) Giftfrosch's Windmills by Giftfrosch http://if.lbp.me/img/bl/68fd404f404128f23d726749c2432fd9ea9ede35.png (http://lbp.me/v/ezres9) Olympus' Peak by Dhana777 | 2012-03-22 01:42:00 Author: Dhana777 Posts: 122 |
Hey, LBPC forums dont allow links on pictures, so they are all broken. I'm interested though! | 2012-03-22 04:16:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hey, LBPC forums dont allow links on pictures, so they are all broken. I'm interested though! yes they do, you just have to know how. You have to use the IMGLINK tags. it'd be this format image location (website) so using that format, I'd go http://if.lbp.me/img/bl/68fd404f404128f23d726749c2432fd9ea9ede35.png (http://lbp.me/v/ezres9) which will give me: http://if.lbp.me/img/bl/68fd404f404128f23d726749c2432fd9ea9ede35.png (http://lbp.me/v/ezres9) | 2012-03-22 04:30:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Thank you biorogue! @pivottt: the Links work now | 2012-03-22 11:21:00 Author: Dhana777 Posts: 122 |
The raw level link isn't there yet, but hey, how did you do this with the other levels? I thought we couldn't link any picture! Next time I play LBP I'll take a look, sounds fun! Though it will wait, I just bought Skyrim. | 2012-03-22 22:49:00 Author: Unknown User |

Though it will wait, I just bought Skyrim. I did it like biorogue said, if you want to make a Link out of a Picture, your Picture needs a instead of the normal [IMG] [IMGLINK]Address of your Image (The Site you want to make a link to) (confusing I know) by the way, the Link for the Levelhub with the Raw Level works now | 2012-03-23 01:42:00 Author: Dhana777 Posts: 122 |
*Sigh* I wish sticker panel was a separate free downloadable DLC... | 2012-03-23 03:54:00 Author: Kaboosh99 Posts: 359 |
http://i8.lbp.me/img/ft/b183223c9d95d757685967e53ec744ab308426dd.jpg -The Firepit got a greek Roof too the concrete Bar beneath the roof got a Sticker - added glass to the Backwall of the Firepit and added two matching Backwallparts too (just cut them out with the Backwall of the Firepit) - The Red Wicker got a white Sticker and I decorated the Wheel with some ornaments - I added a greek vase with Flowers out of Stickermaterial (I'm sure you can get great results with Leaves and Blossoms on Holograph too, just take a sneakpeak at the trees in the next pic) http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/0fe4ea56fb419479bdce41123eaa6cbded3b590d.jpg - added Ivy Stickers on the Wheel-Temple - added golden garlands and red Flowers at the Firepit - the small socket with the golden Flower is a Checkpoint with a Playersensor (don't be Scrooge-like with checkpoints, it doesen't hurt if you place one after each Obstacle) - added clouds under the Floor and on the small Frontlayer If you have Questions feel free to ask! Here is one of my favourit Experimental Levels: http://i2.lbp.me/img/bl/1927ccf1739944cb62c5ce3982a4ea40418a72fa.png (http://lbp.me/v/eqxw98) Skystation by Karrades (work in progress) | 2012-03-25 19:05:00 Author: Dhana777 Posts: 122 |
Let's start with the next Part: http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/732064c9da33f472758871d97e55457e7a5a69ab.jpg soooo booooring right? Out of this Block in the third Layer we make a Hill with a Temple on it. Along the Lines of: " Accentuate what you can't hide" http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/bb417cc88afa4aca6433e84f5ecceac145fa3223.jpg Lets make something for Sackboy to hop up and down : Take the Raw column from the last Steps, make it one Layer thick and cut it down a bit until you can use it like big stairs. http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/7f6c8200647a4d77fe889b8cdc1ff28b1044698b.jpg Now place columns on Top of the "Hill" on the thin Back-Layer. Turn the Column Stairs into creme concrete too. http://id.lbp.me/img/ft/bbdabcfd30690b361b38ac0bbe2ade9fe71209df.jpg take the Plate and the Roof from the Wheel-Temple make it thin and recycle it Now look! looks like a Temple right? ^^ http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/107c6e1e33a7c16f6b57726c7af652ee769a91ab.jpg change the "Hill" into "green Collage" make a small block and place it on the left side. http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/90c55d47499bffef6b8e80f5592ad82ba92627b4.jpg Did you see it? The Roof got a Sticker I molded the green Block from the last Picture with the Cornerediting tool to make it look more "natural" http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/3f5ff875244d91753db5c1c5c49a1d9c6d7bd99d.jpg flip the block and place it on the right side too. place some Stickers on the "Hill" to make it look more natural. http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/ec4e14009c584add0df141531cc3bc6091163497.jpg Take Stickerpanel and place it in Front of the Hill and the left and right side of the Temple. Now take the Ivy Stickers and place them until they look as if the grow up the columns and the Hill Place some Hills on the 4th, 5th and 6th Layer (with the 3D Glitch take) use a Deko-Twig and place it on the Hills. http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/254b6675517dac185265d5f5c0d0eb8cc62136f7.jpg modulate a Mountain out of the 6th Layer, turn it into "textured gray" place some white stickers on the tips and a few flaws on the leftover. take the 4th and 5th Layer and turn them into some nifty Hills and place some stickers on them (change the Material into Doormate) For the Trees use 4th Layer Blocks turn them into Hologram ( Lightning 0%) stick Deko-Leaves and Flowers onto it I had no better Idea for this Obstacle, than to place Medusa in front of it :whistling: modulate a Face on the thin Layer, place Sticker for Eyes, thin Clay lomps as Snake-Hairs, modulate a Mouth out of Stickermaterial and place Deko-teeth on it. To round this thing a bit out, place leafs in the Hair and add golden twirl as a circlet and two Forks as Hairneedles. Place thin Clay lomps (as Snakes) on the Obstacle, Wax-Seals as tounges and a few Spikes on top of the Obstacles and red Stickers as Blood.
