Apple on the rise - video games next?

Archive: 25 posts

I was just reading this article, (http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/video-game-industry-apple-next-victim-195848905.html) and it made me think. I can see it an incredibly possible possibility that Apple could come out with its own game system in the next few years. Trustworthy rumor has it that the company Apple has more money the the United States government. And with the super-popular iPod, iPhone, and iPad, it sure seems like they know what theyre doing technology-wise, along with marketing. Also, I feel the need to put this quote from the article:

In 2011 alone, the company says it sold 172 million "post PC" devices, an Apple term encompassing the iPhone, iPad and iPod. To put that into context, that's nearly 30 million more than the lifetime sales of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita added together.
So what do you think? Since Apple already seems to be in control of the music, cell phone, and tablet-thing market, could our beloved video games be next?

Handheld maybe? I dunno, the vita seems to have that down, but with their marketing power, anythings possible. Also, theres the atrocious looking Wii u coming up, and the controller is like a handheld, it has its own screen... Who knows?

It will be a sad day in gaming, and the death of a once enjoyable pass time.

Imagine, for a moment if will you, a line just outside a retailer. This line is a long one, and the people in it are all listening to their iPods and texting on their iPhones, some of them are even playing with their iPod touch and iPads. Now, imagine, as the line shouts in excitement as the manager of the retailer announces that its doors are open, and the midnight release of the new Apple game console has officially started. This crowd, who has been waiting for hours, maybe even a day, rushes into the store, knocking down people in their way like wild animals in a stampede. They crave for their console and nothing more, and in their wild dash for their new product they don't realize how sad and atrocious they appear to the employees in the store.

These people, with no real reason to buy this console other than their knowledge of it being another of Apple's creation, grab their new console in joy and head out to the registers in a disorderly fashion. As one of the cashiers rings his customer up, he notices that the customer only has the console and an iTunes card with him. The cashier says, "You didn't get any games for your new console?" The customer, who was paying attention to his iPhone, responds with a simple "What?" Again, the man asks him why he didn't get any games for his console, but only this time the customer heard him. And oh how the customer laughed.

"LOL dude, it's Apple's new console; you download the games", the customer says this as he waves the iTunes card in front of the man. "Get with the future already," the Applefanatic says in an obnoxious voice. With that, he leaves the store, satisfied that the people he passes by gawk at him in awe at his new product.

Now, imagine this happening throughout the U.S. Now imagine this happening in Britain. U.K. The world. It's impressive to say the least, almost revolutionary once you think about it. But wait, what about the other consoles? What happened to them?

Nothing happened to them... and that's what killed them.

In this world, where Apple has surpassed every business in the media industry, people have become so blinded by their products that they've helped kill one of the greatest industries ever made: the video game industry. As Apple's new console sells more and more over the years, developers begin to drop the other consoles and instead focus more on Apple's, making more money than they ever did on the other ones. No one will want to play with an Xbox360, right? PS3? Pfft, no: that's dinosaur technology to the Apple users. In the end, developers will keep dumbing down their games, hoping to please the Apple community with their simple games that they've put effort into making now, until all that is left is Apps and not real games themselves. Indie developers will find it easier to use Apple's console instead making an actual game on PC or any other console still available. Over the years, games will no longer be considered "weird" or the usual "basement dweller" pass time. No, instead it'll be considered a casual hobby, and it will be incorporated in everyday life, much like music and films. No longer will we be able to take pride in being different or "nerds". The word "nerd" itself will be used by hipsters, much like they do nowadays, but only to a far more extent.

In the end, consoles will die, thanks to Apple, the revolutionary company behind many groundbreaking ideas that most people don't realize are just rip-offs of other ideas.

And the worst part is the console will be touchscreen activated.

The controller will be touchscreen as well.

And it will only have one button.

It was meant to be over exaggerated, as in "worse case scenario". But yes, I do believe that Apple competing in the console and gaming industry would be a cancerous move for people who actually enjoy video games.

No, sir, you are contradicting yourself. You don't know how to use a Mac, otherwise you would have been using it for media purposes like film editing, amateur music production, and possibly painting if you got the money for the programs. Instead, you use your product to browse through websites, crack overused jokes, and attempt to look "cool" by doing so. It'll be like me buying a top quality gaming computer, installing the best graphics card money can buy, and CPU so powerful that even Bill Gates himself will envy me, yet I only use the internet and nothing more.

This is what I'm talking about: people who know nothing about actual games coming in and ruining it for everyone, and all because they think they know what games are because "I own Apple's newest console, you're just mad! xD"

Come back to me when you can actually bring some evidence to the argument on how "Apple products are useful. It depends on who uses them." can somehow relate to video games, and then we'll talk.

Then video games would have long died out with Micro$oft. People still played their Playstation and Nintendo consoles when M$ came out with their peice of (censored) XBox, there wouldn't be any difference if it was Apple making a console.

This.

CyberSora... I just... I don't know what to say... I am disappoint, is all I can really say. You give Apple WAYWAYWAYWAYWAYWAYWAYWAYx1000 too much credit. Seriously? The end of video games as we know it? The other consoles will die out? Do you know anything about how our government runs?

Imagine, for a moment if you will, a world dominated by one company, Apple. The only phone on the market? iPhone. The only tablet? iPad. The only console? The Apple Console. Apple has taken over the entire industry. AT&T, Verizon, Metro, and all the other service providers sell one phone, the iPhone. There is no competition, the market is dominated by the one and only Apple. Apple has complete market power (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_power).

Apple soon realizes this and they hold a meeting and discuss this current situation.

Guy 1: "So uh, we have completely destroyed the market for video games. Microsoft is out, Sony is out, so is Nintendo, what do you guys think we should do, to really get the money rolling in?"

Guy 2: "Hey I know! Since we're the ONLY industry for video games, and we all know how much people love video games, let's raise the price, to 1000 DOLLARS!!!!11one!111!"

Guy 3: "Great Scott that's a BRILLIANT idea! Now that there is no other company competing with us, we can change the rules as we see fit!"

Guy 1: "I love it! But why stop there!? Everyone needs a phone in this time of age right? LET'S RAISE THE PRICE OF OUR iPHONE to 700 DOLLARS!!!"

Guy 4: "My... My God! You're a genius!"

Guy 1: "This celebrates for a little champagne boys! We're going to be GAZILLIONARES!!!!"

Guy 3: "Hey, why haven't you said anything the entire time, Guy 5?"

Guy 5: *cracks knuckles* "Because it's not going to ever happen. Our government is run through a free market (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_market), a market that is solely built on supply and demand, a market that is the complete opposite of a controlled market. The government won't allow for such a monopoly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly) to exist, that is, when a specific person or enterprise is the only supplier of a particular commodity. In this case, our iPhones or the Apple Gaming System.

Guy 1: "Pff, and what law is this? May I ask? You're bluffing!"

*Guys 2-4 all cheer and yell "Yeah!", trying to defend Guy 1.

Guy 5: "Why, the Competition Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competition_law), my dear co-workers."

Guy 1: "You made that up! There is no such thing!"

Guy 5: "I did not make it up friends, this law prevents the exact thing we are trying to achieve here today. It promotes and maintains market competition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_competition) by regulating anti-competitive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-competitive) conduct.

Guy 1: "Uh, what?"

Guy 5: "It no let you have a gaming system that works off digitally downloaded games."

Guy 1: *clearly upset* "Well why not! "

Guy 5: "Because you'd effectively destroy all the other companies that make their revenue off of hard copies of games."

Guy 1: "Oh yeah? You got any proof? Any examples?"

Guy 5: "Sure I do! The United Sates vs. Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft)trial in 1998 that filed against Microsoft for allegedly abusing monopoly power on Intel-based personal computers in its handling of operating system sales and web browser sales. The issue central to the case was whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle its flagship Internet Explorer (IE) web browser software with its Microsoft Windows operating system. Bundling them together is alleged to have been responsible for Microsoft's victory in the browser wars as every Windows user had a copy of Internet Explorer. It was further alleged that this restricted the market for competing web browsers (such as Netscape Navigator or Opera) that were slow to download over a modem or had to be purchased at a store.

Guy 1: "Bu-"

Guy 5: "I'm not done. The trial started on May 18, 1998 with the U.S. Justice Department and the Attorneys General of twenty U.S. states suing Microsoft for illegally thwarting competition in order to protect and extend its software monopoly. Later, in October the US Justice Department also sued Microsoft for violating a 1994 consent decree by forcing computer makers to include its Internet browser as a part of the installation of Windows software."

Guy 1: "We're not really forcing-"

Guy 5: "Doesn't matter, it's essentially the same abuse of power."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that, my friends, is the sole reason why there will never be a single dominating company in most countries, (as far as I know, the only countries that have such a law are the United States, Europe, and Austrlia.)

Another more recent example is the breakup of AT&T. Does anyone remember Cingular? It was a combination of Bell System and what is now known to be AT&T. The case was filed by United States due to allegations that said company was using monopoly power. This resulted in a break up of said company, one known as Bell Systems, the other known as AT&T. If this had never happened, we'd all probably be using the same service provider for our internet, phones, and TVs.

Another MUCH more recent example, (though I don't know much about it) is the case with AT&T buying out T-Mobile. AT&T had to go through tons of flaming hoops in order to have their case accepted because the United Sates government didn't like the idea of AT&T buying out one of the big service providers, because they were afraid of AT&T becoming ruler of all that is the internets. They let it go however, because of the fact we have so many service providers out there that are all still in a competitive standings. If AT&T was to buy Verizon however? I guarantee the government wouldn't allow such a thing.

TL;DR: Don't worry my friends, let Apple join the wonderful industry that is video games, we will still have our cute Xbox's, our PS3s and Wiis. Apple will be just another OPTION for those who want a console in white.

Nope.

Xbox360 has only gained a small competitive audience, and majority of their games are remakes and overdone genres. Nonetheless, we still have developers making great games, like Witcher II and LittleBigPlanet, so the game industry is still alive. Apple has a huge casual audience, and most of the Apple users buy Apple products not because of its specs but because its the newest version of their device.

This.

[and some cases he probably found in Wikipedia]

I like how you exaggerated your story, too. Adds a nice touch to it.

Anywho, you clearly misunderstood me. Apple will be allowed to participate in the console competition, and because they have a huge fanbase they'll dominate in sells. The gaming community, which already has a problem with elitists and kids-with-mics, will see a new flood of casuals ruining the fun for everybody else. The gamin industry won't die; on the contrary, they'll gain more money than they have before thanks to Apple. But the new community will make playing games harder as talking about games in public will be more common and the usual s**t player joining a server will occur more often.

That's what I consider the death of the gaming industry: allowing such a fanbase join the gaming community, making the gaming hobby as casual as using an iPhone.

I somewhat agree to that. Consoles are good to play with friends who can't be pained to play on PC, and some consoles have good exclusives. Other than that, at least I can live in peace, knowing that Macs aren't too great at playing games (and playing games on PC require more skill).

Also, the new Total War expansion just came out.

Good luck playing that on your consoles ^^ Such a great series

Edit: To the thing about casuals playing - that makes more money in the industry, as long as proper games are still made I don't care. I'm looking at you, StarCraft, DotA, Diablo, Total War, most good racing sims (rFactor, Project C.A.R.S etc) Europ Universalis (and other similar games), Civ... etc etc. I assume games like that will continue to exist, and if some of the casual players start playing proper games, then those devs will make more money ^^

NO, KILL IT WITH FIRE.

If hipsters want to play games they can buy a console like everyone else or stick to their stupid Angry Birds.

PC's also limit how much games can become.

That said, PC's are still able to run better polished games than today's consoles.

As for the Apple talk, what makes gaming so awesome is the work put into the games. Remember what music used to be in the 70's, 80's, 90's? Now look at what is popular today. Now imagine that happening to video games.

Maybe you should make that just a little more clear next time.

Also,

Fixed it for you.

My whole over exaggerated post was directed at the particular statement where you assumed Apple's console would run off an iTunes card, and all games would be digitally bought. Apple will be allowed to participate only, and ONLY if they give the other consoles a fair chance.

Also also, you made me blush when you said that I found all that information from wikipedia.

Woot I have a wikipedia in my brain.

Napster, Rhapsody, and other music downloading sites are given the same fair chance as Apple to compete in the music industry; 70% of all music is downloaded in iTunes.

That "law" only prevents companies from making other businesses go out of business, not allow them to succeed fairly or equally.

There is a difference between fair competition and one successor making wiser/smarter decisions in how they run their business. You can complain all you want but there a large majority of people that buy/use Apple products because they are actually (get ready) better than the others.

There is a reason 70% of all music is downloaded in iTunes. Want one? iTunes does NOT require a monthly subscription to use it, Rhapsody and Napster both do. Is that unfair competition? Or is that just stupid marketing strategies? I think it's the latter.

That "law" only prevents companies from making other businesses go out of business, not allow them to succeed fairly or equally.

This makes no sense. In order for a company to make another go out of business, it would have to succeed unfairly, and unequally. If the law is placed to prevent companies from making other businesses go out of business, then it is indirectly allowing them to succeed fairly and/or equally. I just gave a single example as to why iTunes is doing better, Rhapsody and Napster both have a fair chance to do just as well as iTunes, but they ask for a monthly subscription.

Wikipedia could be misleading and shouldn't be regarded as a credible source for documentation, so don't let it go to your head.

I could be missing the sarcasm, but you should highlight the bottom of my post. None of that information was taken from Wiki, I just linked to the terms I was talking about for your benefit.

I own an iPhone, and I love it. I've owned an Android, I've owned a Sidekick back when they still existed, I've owned a flip phone, a slide phone, I've owned a Razr, I've owned every single type of phone there is. None of them hold up to the iPhone. The iPhone is clean, slick, smooth, and I've NEVER had a single problem with it.

I owned a Droid. (I forget what it was called, but it was suppose to be the "iPhone Killer".) It was amazing for the first month, but it slowly began to bog down. It would have a second delay whenever I would swipe my finger, or try to type a text. It was horrible. Same with my Windows phone. Slow. Slow. Slow.

iPhone however? Smooth, clean, no delay whatsoever. Like I said earlier, a large majority of people own Apple products because they're actually pretty good.

However, I somewhat agree that a lot of people by their products simply because it's an Apple product. But I digress.

You're ignoring the fact that both M$ and Apple are crap, Apple wouldn't do any better than M$ did, even if Apple has such a large group of followers. The most that would happen is having another console to buy, M$ only stood in for so long because they had a solid plan of targeting an audience of 12-18 year old American males who love nothing better than violence, buff heroes, and shooting everything that moves. Apple would have a similar plan of targeting casual "gamers" who like to play small games while they sit waiting for something, or when they have nothing better to do.

Short: M$ is crap, Apple is crap, they both have their little groups who loyaly buy their crap because they have short attention spans. This won't affect the rest of us, who still have quality games to play, so don't whine about it as though it was the same bull about 2012, the world won't end, the gaming industry won't end, all is fine.

Consoles are superior to PC's.

I'm not sure what all this talk is of apple bringing casual gaming to consoles, but that happened long ago. I'll fill you in as it seems you missed it: Wii.

Also to note something I read earlier, games stopped becoming the 'basement dweller' and 'weird' type long ago. Here's another one you may of missed: CoD.

Competition is a good thing, and I see no problem with apple bringing their version to the table. It's very unlikely I'd buy such a product, but I wouldn't refuse it straight off due to fanboyism.

Also +1 on whale's iPhone comment. I hate to be one of those people, but at the end of the day it works and it's reliable. Which is what I want most from my phone.

Someones trying to make up for something.... And everyone isn't gonna go spend 600$+ for something to play games on.

Anyway, eeeehhh. I don't think this is really an issue. A lot of small consoles have come out and died within a year. If Apple made one I imagine it would be successful but not overwhelming. I do see someones point. (Don't remember who said it) that Apple is slowly dominating all media. Maybe the end of the world will involve Kony, Apple, and the Iranian nukes? Man I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. But yeah I think that if they actually do have a console it won't destroy Sony, Nintendo or Microsofts gaming industry.
