The 'BALL' object...

Archive: 9 posts

Need a little help!

I've had a comment on my Pinball table regarding the 'BALL' in my Pinball level. At the moment it isn't a ball, as I'm having issues when using it.

When I use the 'BALL' object it has the habit of sinking and occasionally getting stuck into the materials, especially my flippers. I have a material tweaker attached which doesn't resolve anything, I've played around with material tweakers on the actual materials also and even with the tweakers removed it still does it.

At the moment I'm using a cylinder shape which works just as well if not better in my opinion, but really would like to use the Pinball instead.

Is this a bug with the BALL does anyone know or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

One of my friends once had a similar issue making a pinball style level. He had to implement a respawn mechanic for the ball if it got stuck in the walls...

Have you tried slowing your pinball down? And what type of Material did you end up using for your bumpers? I think the chance of "sink in" is lowest if you use some kind of Metal, but I might be wrong.

Thanks Slaeden Bob,

You're right about the speed, it does only seem to happen if it travels quick towards objects. Funnily enough I was trying different materials on the flippers last night and a harder material does make a difference... still though, it shouldn't really sink into the softer ones should it?

Have you tried playing around with a material tweaker? Bounciness and friction settings might yield different but satisfying results. No guarantees, though.2012-03-21 10:14:00

Ideally no, but the physics engine of LBP, though still very impressive, has its quirky moments now and then -Impacts between Materials of different masses is one of them

you could try making your material cylindrical shape "ball" out of invisable material and merge it into the ball object of the same size, it may reduce the chances of it "sinking" into the walls/flippers etc2012-03-21 14:37:00

That is a GREAT idea...

I am currently using a cylinder shape which works brilliantly, so merging an invisible cylinder shape into the ball object is a must try..

Thanks for that!

Thanks!

I had issues with the ball clipping into other materials mainly because of velocity. When the ball hit the flipper and my flipper moved too quickly, the ball often went through the flipper. I fixed this by not using "flipper" on the bolts and cranking the speed down a bit. You may also have issues with the flippers dislodging when the speed is all the way up.

My personal preference for creation is to make all materials indestructible and place a gravity/inertia tweaker on practically everything! (keep a couple pre-configured on a block nearby for easy copy/pasting)

Towards the end of my project I constantly suffered from the flippers breaking parts of the table. Constant backups are a must .

Yeah exactly what was happening, it always seemed to be if the ball was moving fast toward the flipper it would literally get sucked into it. I've been recently tweaking the material tweakers and it's been behaving itself... fingers crossed x
