Politics

Archive: 36 posts

I don't think there is a thread like this. So I thought I might test the waters.

To be honest, I'm completely oblivious to politics. Too many words too learn lol.

So I'd thought maybe some of of the more um..."liberal?" folks on LBP might fill me in on somethings.

And I know politics are different from country to country. So lets keep it broad.

So to start: Can someone explain the current U.S. economic situation?

I don't exactly know much about politics, but I think that I heard that the U.S. economy is bad or something. 2012-03-20 13:10:00

Here's a guy talking to a bunch of fellow stock brokers about what happened as they all laugh about it.

That guy is awesome lol. Here's a vid of him trying to talk to the 99% as the 1%. It's 2 hours long but it's quite entertaining. To be honest I'm not 100% sure what there talking about (cwutididthar), but they're all angry about something lol.

When I look at the USA on its own I think 'Wow, thats rather messed up.' When I look at it in context to the rest of the world I think 'Really, its not that bad.'

But thats really my own vague opinion.

Do you agree with his reasoning behind why the current US economic situation developed, then? That was your question.

They're rightfully angry. A lot of young people like me are when it comes to employment and education. I don't think impotent protests are the best channel for that anger, though. Depending how things go it could be an opportune time for a populist leader to strike and organise them into something more dangerous.

I don't think I know well enough about the situation to say I do. But what he is saying makes sense, although I don't know if it's true, and a lot of people there disagreed with him, with points I didn't fully understand.

The "awesome" part was mostly just how he stood and gave his opinion in a crowd of people with different/opposing opinions

OK But as he was saying: Maybe there directing their anger in the wrong direction?

I just clicked the insert video icon and put the link in. How do I make it so that it doesn't do that?

You sort of have the right idea. Politics are really about a candidate trying to make his party look better than the opposing ones so they can get away with passing laws and holding power that really is unfair to the rest of us. For example: the Obama ministration wants to raise taxes on the rich Americans. This conflicts with the Republicans' interest because most of them will be affected by this new tax raise, so they aim to make Obama look bad. At the same time, they have candidates running for office so they can keep power in Congress, much like how Democrats are barely being heard in Congress due to Obama (D) being President. This is why you see the media attack Democrats so much: because most of the people in the media business are Republicans themselves, and they hate to have an opposing party have too much say in their lifestyle.

Of course, most candidates who run for President also do it for the Golden Parachute, which is basically a guaranteed paycheck and "Presidential" service (security, insurance, etc.) for life. So, even if the new elected President is kicked out or just resigns from office, he'll have that backup plan to satisfy his needs for the rest of his or her life. It's a sad and corrupted system, to be honest, as we hardly see a "good" President emerge: they've been gradually getting more and more rare nowadays.

I don't have a fancy video but I wouldn't be a good American if I didn't make a comment on politics I have little knowledge about. One good thing about the U.S political system (yes I do find something good) is that the nation itself has existed regardless of who was in charge, whether competent or not, and so on (What civil war?). It will also continue to exist even if individuals in it are screw-ups (theoretically).
Feel free to tear apart my unfinished, half-baked thought. Until then, I get to say "I is smart!"

Hey now! We are breaking the most important rules of most great communities and social gatherings. No discussion of religion or politics. Why do most abide by this golden rule? Well think about, where could these discussions possibly go? We could sit here and rip on each political system one by one (although no one has ventured away from US as of yet) and what would that do? Basically you would only be putting others down and setting up a volatile environment ripe for flame wars. Pages upon pages of walls of text being exchanged without one side ever considering their point of view to be flawed. It's just a warning, not a prophecy, but I would just keep this in mind as we proceed.2012-04-03 23:23:00

Sorry if I sound like an a-hole for saying this, but that is a ridiculous comment. Honestly, one of the main reasons why these type of threads get locked is because people like you can't handle an argument. Are you sensitive, or do you just hate seeing other people disproving or disagreeing with you?

Threads like these encourage those to speak their mind and share their views with other members here to simply have a conversation and let their minds flow with thoughts. Will it impact them in real life? Maybe, we're not too sure. However, discussions like these should be used to talk about a topic in a mature manner that doesn't try to "win" in an argument, but rather let one's opinions be heard and be reconsidered so the other side doesn't think "Oh, they suck because I say so!" I don't see any fighting in this thread, and it'll remain like that because I know LBPC is above enforcing their beliefs over others.

If you can't handle seeing a discussion that might "offend" you in some sort of way, then don't post in the thread. It's that simple.

Don't worry, I can fix the 'having a go at each other political systems for whatever reason' stuff.

All politicians suck and are a drain on all that is good. Like beer. They don't seem to like beer, or gaming for that matter... Which means I have no reason to like them. TB + Day9 should form a coalition government somehow (despite TB being English and Day9 being American.. but yeah.)

Ah see that. You've already jumped on me. I simply stated a warning about flame wars in a situation in which flame wars are very prevalent. Why you feel the need to contest that is beyond me. Are you trying to say that they are not? I never said to close the thread, I never even hinted at it. Simply put, a common rule has been broken and we tread on thin ice. You say I am the reason why threads get closed, but if anything I am trying to keep open. It is those who shoot first and ask questions later that cause arguments and the resulting moderation. So let's just leave it that.2012-04-03 23:58:00

That seems accurate.

Anyway, I've stopped paying attention to politics. Two moderately different platforms trying to make the other look bad.

My main beef is the notion that it's out "civic duty" to vote. If we only have two real options (both of whom are really picked by the party or whatever), and neither of them say anything that matters to us... should we really vote for one just to prove we're American? Why are we pressured to vote when neither means anything to us? IS an empty, just-to-prove-you're-American vote really worth anything at all? Shouldn't we only vote for people who we want to, not out of some degree of "duty"?

Also, about the bipartisan system and it's intended goal of making sure people can have majorities in order to run better... is a forced majority really that important? Do we really need to make it be one or the other for the sole purpose of lessening dissent?

Didn't the President have a drink with some foreign leaders (or ambassadors)? I'm sure some politicians like a good beer.

To be honest though, I have yet to see a President drink Jack Daniels. If they ever do that on national television, my respect for them will just soar through the roof.

Indeed, I am merely speaking about the general insistence that people should vote, regardless of if they actually want to.

Why do we make a great deal about how people don't vote when we don't make sure that we have people people want to vote for?

Well my personal thoughts would be that unless you are going to campaign hard and try to help your candidate some how, there is no point even telling anyone who you are going to vote for or whether you will even vote this time around. All these bumper stickers and lawn signs are over zealous and tasteless.2012-04-04 00:27:00

I do not disagree. I actually see it as worse to vote at random just for the sake of voting than to not vote at all.

Well, other countries have their own even more awesome political events.

Like the Ukraine having a tear gas battle in their congress a few years ago for some reason. Like, what?

lolwut?

Sure, Fox news is a bias conservative news network, but I haven't ever heard of the media in general being called mostly Republican. I suppose the argument can go either way, but I'm positive you have that statement backwards.
