The Stone Temple - Pictures Added

Sorry I dont have a video, but I would really appreciate any feedback on my level. I rarely get any worth reading in game, which is why I tried here. This feedback for feedback system is great, anyways back to my level.

Basically your average platformer with a race thrown in it for competition. Its the second in a series, but it really doesnt matter if you play the first or not. ( this one is much better done anyways ) The whole premise behind the levels are that the temple themselves are coming to life and they dont want you to leave. So its your job to brave your way through. It is probably going to be very challenging and difficult for most, but Its a fun difficult.... or at least thats what I was shooting for. Pretty funny prize for completion, but thats probably only in my opinion lol. Play it by yourself, it's better enjoyed that way. Anyone that takes the time to review it, I will gladly do the same for any one of your levels, just let me know which one.

My Psn is DoctorRamatool so that would probably be the best way to look it up, havent tried looking up the level itself... but it may not bring it up with all the temple levels out there. Anyways, Thanks!

*** UPDATED ***

Thanks for the help, used the suggestions and added the lights and made the nooks a little wider.
Tried to thin the gas out... if it still isnt good let me know.
Took all the blood out.... doesnt look as good to me heh... but still plays the same
Made the small masks a little bigger.
Added masks to the second jet pack part.
Changed the look since I ditched the blood.
Made the beginning look a little less dull

Added some pics as well.

Ok, just played this level. And wow, people... Don't let another gem like this run away. Seriously.

I don't know why, but anytime there is a level that's straight epic platforming with a good case of difficulty, I fall in love automatically. I'll post my thoughts now.

The Good:

- The level is all straight up platforming, and I love that, and the way you implemented it, you never get bored. Good job.

- Ok, I must say you are the first to implement something like this, ok everyone, in his level, there are masks placed around the level. The level states that these are "safe spots" which I must say was probably the most ingenious thing about this level. I would of gave you a thumbs up for this alone, but the platforming is just the cherry on top.

- The difficulty in this level is REALLY HARD. I died about 20 times(exaggeration much?) and I think I'm a pretty good platform player. But the thing that was amazing is, I did not once have to retry the level, he has checkpoints placed all over the level, in amazing locations. To make the level difficult, but not impossible.

- Replayability, there is a whole hell of a lot of it. The whole level is based on how fast you can beat it. While there are score bubbles, it's all basically about the speed. I can see myself coming back to this level a lot, and that is always a good thing.

- Story, well, there isn't a big story in this level, but it can be excused since it's all about platforming... There is a small little story to get it going, but it wasn't needed IMO.

Suggestions:

- I don't have that many, but the part where the temple is coughing out blood, and skulls. I would either scrap that whole part out, or make it something less, bloody... For one, it's a bit frustrating trying to grab the sponge because you are constantly being hit back to the ground. And secondly, I do not want to see this level get moderated for something like that.

- There is one part of the level, where the hint tells you to "Just Run!" ( Nice, because without that, it would be impossible to pass it without knowing you can basically run through like those Mario levels... ) Anyways, at this section, I fell down my first try, in the second whole with the fire bar(?? we'll just leave that as it's name) and the fire bar doesn't reach all the way to the bottom, so you basically have to jump up and hit the fire to kill yourself, simple fix, just make it longer.

- The section with the blue gas is a bit too hard, not because of the fact that it's really slow pace. But the fact that the blue gas is kind of moving around in a way so you can't see where your going... Maybe change it to material and just use the fire hazard? I don't know, because I almost didn't make it and survived on my 2nd to last life. And being this far in the level and dying would be a dissapointment, and people would give you a low star count...

- The section with the moving into the back layer while those electrified blocks move up and down, you might want to make the hole bigger, and even add a small LED light inside to indicate you can enter here, and you also might want to have the jetpacks length stop here, because I was able to use it to get to the bottom, but not far enough to "cheat" my way out of it. I say making it bigger because, sometimes when you try to enter the layer, the Sackboy doesn't respond and you die.

Overall, I really loved this level, because it's really hard, but it's not unforgiving. You have tons of checkpoints, placed in "sweet" spots ( lol? ) which does it for me, 5 stars and hearted. Oh and I really love the EPIC ending where it states " You... Shall... Not... Live... " then the music gets all epic and woo yea woo yea woo yea your like OMG RUN YES NOT THE DEATH NOO I CANT TAKE IT. K, sorry for the rant there, I just couldn't help it.

5 Stars, Hearted, And you as well. Congrats, now... off to play your first one just for the sake of it.

This makes me glad I came to these forums, It's so nice to see some feedback outside of the in game comments ( not like any of them say anthing outside of sucks or something along that lines anyways ).

I really appreciate you taking the time to write all the suggestions up.

The blood part - Yeah I just added that thought it was cool. I'll go take it out now and maybe just leave the skulls. I'd hate to see it get moderated too ><.

The gas - Yeah I've had the biggest problems with this.... I've tried to angle cameras so it looks good but it all still looks blurred and tough to see.. I'm going to try to shrink the gas... maybe have problems seeing at all though is what I'm worried about. I'll try the fire if thats the case.... just dont think it will look as good.

The nooks and the jetpack - lol thanks for pointing this out... thats pretty cheap. I'll try out the light idea and making the nooks a little wider.

Thanks again!

Ley's see, here are my thoughts as I run through your level:

- It seems odd that a voice from nowhere is telling you that rumor has it the temple is devouring people. Maybe add a person there? Same for the yeah right box. Or is that Sackboy thinking?

- Those eyeballs on the flying platform are very cool. The dialogue still seems weird though.

- The Azure Palace was moderated for the tiny amount of blood it had. I'd hate to see yours meet that fate. Maybe have it just coughing up skulls?

- It took me a while to realize what you meant by "masks are safe spots"

- Spawns are very cool, as well as the first area of the temple

- You might consider putting that rising platform on flipper - In. I'm not sure it'd work but it might eliminate the wait.

- The platforming from the second jetpack til the electric cubes struck me as annoying and unnesecary frustration.

- Small masks are hard to see.

- Last place! Woo!

All in all a good level, but some of it seems just too frustrating.

Thanks for playing through and writing up a review.

Theres a keep out sign for the first dialogue... and yeah the rest is sackboy thinking.

Thanks for that information... had no idea that happend to the azure palace, going to go get rid of that now...

As for the second jetpack part... yeah its somewhat out of place.. doesnt really look like a part of the temple is moving to attack you... just looks like a normal old obstacle... pretty much making it out of place. So I agree... but I ran out of ideas with the main mechanic of the level heh... so just went with that.

I'll try the flipper motion on the lift... that wait does get annoying especially if you die alot...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tried the flipper motion... just made the lift pop :/...

Alright, I admit I didn't actually beat your level yet, and it's not from a lack of platforming skills. Probably more along the lines of my own stupidity...anyway.

Pros

-Level looks good. Nothing incredibly fancy, but you are obviously effective at keeping things simple and packing your level with as much as possible. This is what I liked about your Dojo series (played them all way back and loved them).

-The platforming is pretty fun, and it's neat to see you weren't afraid to keep it difficult but doable at the same time. Well executed.

-As others mentioned, the masks = safe spot indicator was genious, so bravo on that!

Cons

- There is some really annoying and tedious platforming after the jetpack section (just past the electric moving walls). To me it's more on the frustrating side, rather than the challenging side.

-Alright this is where I died...that elevator! I had no idea what to look for or how to stay alive. I tried stick with the skulls that were floating up and down but I kept dying. Plus the elevator coming down was incredibly slow...but of course this can't be helped. Maybe some indication on how to beat that part? I feel incredibly stupid right now haha

Once I figure out that part I'll give more feedback, but overall the level was well executed Good job Rama

The part with the glass floor when the walls are coming up and down, that was incredibly difficult, maybe try to make that a bit easyer.
I'm not taking part in F4F, just FYI.

I really appreciate it. Is there any one of your levels you'd like some feedback on first? I'll get around to all of them sooner or later... but just wondering if there was one you'd want me to start with.

-Glad to hear you enjoyed the platforming, thats what I was trying to go for.

-Yeah, I just threw those in to slow people down on the timer... it is annoying but there is a trick to it

-Yeah, It is really slow... wish there were some way to speed up its decent. The trick to that one is to move right when a block dissolves so youre safe till you have to dodge another one... some are real close calls but it is possible to do it without losing a life.

Hmm I'm gonna try it again since everything before the elevator was a lot of fun anyway

And yeah if you want you could check out A Knight's Tale (Part 2A): Ranaku's Awakening. Thread is linked in my sig, and if you want a good grasp on the saga play the first one Good or Evil?: A Knight's Tale, and choose the evil side ^^ Thanks m8

Hey doc, just played your level &it truely is great.

pros

One of not many levels that's really challenging (so much so I couldn't beat it). I shall play & play until do lol. It draws you in that way. knowing you can complete if you concentrate that little bit more.

I also like the way you didn't stray from the theme of colours & shapes you had.

cons

Too hard! lol. Nawh, that's sorta the point right? I couldn't really find fault. Although i found the part just after the running across the gaps bit near impossible. The part where you jump over the flaming sticks before you get squished, maybe they're a lil too high. Then again i'm probably only saying that cos i died there lol.

All in all a great level, that requires a good amount of skill to complete, that will see visits from me until i succeed

hey thanks man, I appreciate you playing and writing this up.

lol yeah.... you can jump over the first two without being hit... very hard though.. you can still make it even if you have to be hit by them each once.. just need to wait a few seconds so you dont die from the second hit. I really do need to add a chat bubble saying "no pain, no gain" or something like that.

Hardcore level! Not completed, but I will come back later.

Some +/- :

+ Reminds me of good ol'plateforming ? la Mario Bros.
+ Good gameplay elements, like the "safe zones".
+ Good challenge, and plenty of checkpoints to back it up.
+ Like the others said, simple, yet effective design.
+ Good pace (except for the begining, see below).

- The start was a bit slow, with a long walk and the jumping on the pillars. I would liked to see some visual elements or decorations since nothing else is happening.
- I really don't liked the part with the big elevator. "If you die, wait...". When you die near the end 2-3 times, it's very long for the elevator to come back.
- I died when you have to go up to pass 2 spinning wheels with fire. I found this a little bit frustrating as I can't see well where I am going, making this a lucky shot.
- Some part are a little too tight. For example, the place where I must run, I had to burn myself one shot before running or I could not make it...
- At the part where you have to jump through holes in the fire pillars, it's hard to see the right moment to start jumping because of the fire texture.
- The blue gas at the end does not look too good...

I would like to have your feedback on my new level too.

-Took your advice and added some things to the start... not much, but better looking than before I think.

-Yeah.... I don't really know how to fix that...could make it easier by making it slower... but lol if it were still hard for some it would take even longer. I might take some of the blocks out... but I can manage getting through without dying every time.

-Going to try to work some cameras better for the fire parts you mentioned, I can see what you mean..... the one where you run, you can get through without being burned... It took a while to get that one just right... I could make it easier... but I like the way it works right now.

-The blue gas.... I'm going to figure out something to replace it with.. coming up blank right now though...

Thanks for taking the time to play and write this up! I will check your level out later today or by tomorrow for sure.

I know what that's like. I can breeze through my levels easily while it kept getting tags like "Frustrating" and "Tricky." I guess it's because we've played our levels to death. I know I have anyway. So, yeah, it's hard to judge difficulty when you are making it because you know all the tricks

I gave your level a go, and from what I can tell it's really good. I haven't finished it yet (pretty dang hard), but having been a gamer since the days of SNES I love a good platforming challenge. I'll give it another shot here in a bit.

If you can get through your level easily, I would wager you wouldn't have much trouble with mine

EDIT:

Ok, I finally finished your level (twice actually, and both times my internet sucked and the scores didn't upload. bummer) and what a great sense of accomplishment you get! That's what I like about challenging levels; if you finish a level that you basically just have to walk through, you just don't get that same feeling (even if the scenery is well done). The platforming is top notch and I like the variety of obstacles. The open/close motion of the platforms really makes for an exciting (sometimes nerve-wracking) time. It's exhilarating when you just barely make it to a safe spot and have the walls come crashing together millimeters behind you. WHOO!

I do have a few suggestions:

*The initial moving platform: I would make it a motion sensor instead of a button. I often landed on the button weird and it would spaz out, going back and forth really fast.

*Some of the connections between platform sections aren't very smooth. There's one in particular that kept messing me up; the part where it says "No pain, no gain." I get over the first two just fine, and then there's a little corner that is just high enough that you can't run over it. I hit it pretty much every time and lost all of my forward momentum (which you need to carry your sackperson over the second pillar). Just go back and try to smooth out the connections if possible. I think the corner editing tool would be useful for that.

*The blue gas: the part where you have to go slowly. I agree that it's kinda hard to see exactly where the boundary is located. I think it might be better to make that all electric stone or glass. It would have the same effect (instant death) but you could see it much more clearly.

*Camera Zones: I think that the use of more camera zones would be very helpful in planning your next move. One such zone would be very helpful in the part with the jetpack and the spinning fire logs (The ones with a central fire log and four smaller ones). A camera angle that shows the entire obstacle would greatly help in timing movement correctly.

It's a very rewarding level in that you feel great when you're done. You think, "Wow I just did that!" The level is **** hard, so beginners beware, but if you've got "skillz that killz" then put them to the test here. I had a blast, good work Doc!

lol yeah, pretty much all the tags on my levels are difficult, frustrating, tricky. I don't mind all that much though. Heh yeah, I play my levels alot just to see if I can tweak them all the time.... I stopped changing the difficulty around though.... people will complain over the smallest things sometimes.

Thanks for playing my level and the kind words... and lol my SNES was my most played system up until LBP. I will try your levels when I get the chance.

Hey, found you. Just played your level. I liked it for the most part. It is challenging and I have yet to finish it but I hearted it for later.

Pros-Neat interlocking block paths reminiscent of Super Mario World castles but on a much larger scale.

Good challenge. Not easy enough to make it on your first try but not frustrating enough to make you not want to try it again.

I also liked the "safe" mask markers and the decorated checkpoints.

Cons-It is a bit repetitive. Granted, each section is different, but they all hold to the same general principle of "keep going unless you get smooshed."

The introductory section was a bit long. I felt I had to wait a bit to get to the level itself.

And, lastly, (and this is more of a personal preference) I felt there was a bit too much text. I don't mind story development but I feel I had the gist of it after the first few text bubbles.

Over all, this is a good level that is worth a play (or two, or more!). It was difficult, but the objectives were clear and I never felt frustrated. Good job!

Just finished your level, but the score failed to upload.

- I thought the beginning doesn't fit into the level very well, though I liked the explanations of the safe-spots etc.
I think it's because the "story" is pretty simple, maybe pure platforming would be better.

- I liked the safe-spot markings, I would have died a lot more without them. Though I sometimes forgot about them and died, but that's my fault.

- The platforming was indeed really hard and it was good that you had a lot of checkpoints. I think you could have used infinite checkpoints though. I was close to using all lives a few times, but I didn't have to repeat in the end.

- It's also good that you made the "sections" between save points not too long. Avoids frustration.

- It looks like you still have some thermometer space and I would recommend decorating the level a bit and using some different materials. It looked kinda bland throughout the whole level.

- Sometimes I had trouble seeing the checkpoint areas, a few lights would help.

- The blue poison gas in the holes more to beginning was irritating. It looked like you made it move in and out and I thought it was safe in there and jumped into it. If it's fixed there and it's the game making it invisible then you probably can't do anything about it though.

Hmm.. that's all I can think of. Overall it was a fun, hard and not frustrating experience, but the decoration and design could be improved.

First off I'll like to say I'm gald to have you on my friends list. Your levels are challenging and thats what I love about them. It seems I get nowhere if I don't play with you sometimes but its easyer to play with someone with skill like yourself. If anyone tells you to change things to make it more easyer don't because there perfect! People are always telling me that my levels are hard but I don't think they are. I say the more challenging the better. Can't wait to see your next new level. 2009-01-11 09:13:00
