Demon Prey [Horror Shooter] (Are you tough enough?)

Archive: 7 posts

Whilst i'm tinkering away at The Adventures Of Tone ll, i decided to present a game i sat on for about 5 months, here for you to play.

I have given it a fresh once over to get it as neat and up-to-date as possible.

Inspired by a nostalgic gaming session at a friends house about a year ago. We stayed up all night playing old school shooters such as Doom, Quake, Exhumed (Powerslave in America), Alien Trilogy, Apocolypse, Duke Nukem and more and i was inspired at how much fun these games still present. Doom is timeless in it's gameplay, especially.

So i set up to create a topdown tribute/throwback to that age and those games, mostly Doom.

It took about 5 months of on and off work, but by the time of completion, i didn't think it was good enough and left it on my moon for months.

It wasn't until my friend lron2000 asked to see it about 2 months ago that i decided to publish it for him to play. His feedback was glowing, then my other friend, Liquidus725, also gave glowing feedback in the comments.

Recently, Mysteltain, who posts here, has gone through it (completing it on his 1st go!) and convinced me to present it here.

So, i'll stop blabbering and present to you....Demon Prey.

It's another old school romp. The controls are easy to grasp and are again inspired by the days of old.

The game is admittedly quite hard, but fair. There's a save game check point half way through as it is quite long.

Also included is a survival mode! One room, 8 waves of all kinds of enemy.

I'd like to challenge you to grasp this game. Mysteltain remarkably completed it on his 1st go, but only barely and scored a whopping 47,270 and got to the 7th wave on survival mode....can you beat him?

As a note of warning - The game has mild violence of blood and gore and satanic themes. Perhaps not suitable for a child.

I hope some of you take on this challenge and note all my throwback nods to games like Doom and Quake....but most of all, enjoy it.

P.S. There are two cheat codes available. They can be found in two hidden areas....or by KINDLY asking me!

All voices by me
Music: MM choices
Designed and conceived by me.

Well, thank you for such high praise, haha! I'm not gonna lie, I'm still baffled how I managed to survive that final boss fight the first time through. But, before I start babbling, I think a review is in order.

Presentation: Once again, you've got a keen eye for atmosphere. The introductory scene is properly menacing with the booming, malevolent voice giving you a recap of the story, and the skull flickering with light. When the first half of the level starts, it gives you the feeling that something is lurking around every corner. Blood smears along the floor, flickering lights, lights bursting and doors being blown away as zombies come rushing out--just the right thing to put you on edge. And when you reach the second half of the level, there's no pretense for danger: you're in the belly of the beast and there's no easy way through it.

I really liked the consistency with themes: the military facility is sterile, but clearly it's not a place you wanna be. The second half definitely lets you know that you're in the underworld. The designs for the zombies and demons are well done, as are the overall effects with each of them. The main character design is very well done, and I like the HUD and how his picture changes as he loses more and more HP.

While the first half of the level runs smoothly, the second half does has a couple of sections with noticeable slowdown. I'd recommend a fresh start of LBP2 before playing the entirety of the level. While it never froze for me, it might if you've been playing for a while.

Gameplay: It's definitely a control scheme that takes getting used to, but once you do it's pretty intuitive. Each of the six weapons has their use, and even though some of them are better than others you'll quickly find yourself exhausting what you've got just to stay alive.

And staying alive is your biggest concern here: this level is HARD. If you want to survive between health packs and ammo, then you'll want to play smart. But it's very well possible to do so. Keep your eyes peeled, and focus on your health. A lot of the later demons can be very punishing, so memorizing their attacks and movements are key. Also, be sure to keep your eyes out for all of those secret passages! Extra ammo and health await behind them! And those secrets will give you quite the edge if you're clever enough to find them...

Story: There's definitely something to be said about a simple premise: it just works. And it's also definitely in vein of the old-school shooters, even down to the wisecracks made when you unlock some of those secrets. The demonic voice that narrates the intro and intermission between the first and second half is very well done.

Music and SFX: The quiet music in the background is appropriately foreboding, and the sounds effects all work very well. Each type of gunshot sounds fitting, and every demon has fitting cry or roar.

Overall: A very well done level that, despite the rare hiccup, is a perfect throwback to the old-school shooters of yore. If you want a blast from the past, I'd highly recommend this level for you, as well as for those of you who want to have a great challenge. It got a "like" and a "heart" from me, and I do agree: can you beat my score, or even survive to the end?

Overall everything looks great and all the enemies move well and seem fairly intelligent. I really struggled with the controls. I always skip tutorials and try to work out buttons first. So I really struggled with the shooting mechanic, and considering that you need to shoot a lot of stuff it was rather vexing. It is explained in the help and such, but it wasn't really intuitive straight away.

You sure do like making levels that get you killed quickly I must say but it is very well balanced with it feeling like it was probably my fault. Although I did also blame the controls a bit on this one.

Ha, glad you liked my demonic voice. Obviously a nod to the intros, intervals and endings of Doom. It's deliberate that the two areas oppose each other, the 1st (as you point out), is forboding and has tads of modern cinematic designs, but the 2nd is an all out Demon slaughtering!

I really liked the consistency with themes: the military facility is sterile, but clearly it's not a place you wanna be. The second half definitely lets you know that you're in the underworld. Im glad you picked all this stuff up. Glad you enjoy the designs, i'm not a too much of a fan of my designs to be honest. I'm making up for it all in the next one. That HUD face is another thing ripped from Doom.

While the first half of the level runs smoothly, the second half does has a couple of sections with noticeable slowdown. I'd recommend a fresh start of LBP2 before playing the entirety of the level. While it never froze for me, it might if you've been playing for a while.
I'm aware of this hiccup that happens at a certain point in area 2. I have reduced it as much as possible, but a whole area redesign would be the only thing to erase it and as i'm not attempting to add to this anymore, i don't think it's worth it.

Gameplay: It's definitely a control scheme that takes getting used to, but once you do it's pretty intuitive. Each of the six weapons has their use, and even though some of them are better than others you'll quickly find yourself exhausting what you've got just to stay alive.

Haha, hard indeed...but always fair. You're completely right about the secrets, they balance the game in your favour. The controls are inspired by a game called Apocolypse on the PS1. Again, it's just another nod to the old ways.

Story: There's definitely something to be said about a simple premise: it just works. And it's also definitely in vein of the old-school shooters, even down to the wisecracks made when you unlock some of those secrets. Even though there is a plot in this game, it is told exactly like a classic, in this case, Doom. Glad you appreciate it all. Can you be my official reviewer? lol Glad you picked up on the nods to the old shooters too.

Music and SFX: The quiet music in the background is appropriately foreboding, and the sounds effects all work very well. Each type of gunshot sounds fitting, and every demon has fitting cry or roar.
The Mm picks for the music were great fits i think, glad you agree. I made most of the monster sounds by the way lol

Overall: A very well done level that, despite the rare hiccup, is a perfect throwback to the old-school shooters of yore. Thanks so much for writing that! I've replied in the quote.

Completely agree about the audience choices for the game, those who favour old school, or challenge hunters.

Oh, i think you'll be top of the board for awhile.

Thanks Mr_Fusion!

I think my levels need to be viewed as a whole to understand fully as i tend to have a lot of building up. However, i'm appreciative that you played what you did.

The controls are inspired by a shoot-em-up game called Apocolypse on the PS1. My game is a throw back to those golden times, maybe you're not a fan of this idea or old enough? (forgive me if that comes across wrong!) But yes, i agree, in this modern age, such controls will take an adjustment to enjoy. The help section is available to view at any time during game to help those who may struggle.

It's worth noting that this is an old game. One of the 1st i made on LBP2. I'm hoping to rectify what i am not happy with in Demon Prey 2 which i am currently working on.

Haha, nice comment about my difficulty. Well, because my games so far have been throwbacks to a different era, an era notorious for having many challenging games, it's kind of a design necessity. However, Tone didn't need to be exceptionally hard, so that's why i was willing to tone it down (no pun intended). Are you familiar with the old school games ala Doom?

Anyway Mr_Fusion, as said, i am working on Demon Prey 2 and i truly hope you return to see it because, so far, i feel i have outdone myself, it's lightyears better than this and possibly anything i have ever done.....and guess what? I'm adding a difficulty selection mechanic, so you can put it on easy lol It has new controls too, but is still based on the controls found here, but i think you'll find them much more rewarding.
It will still be a throw back to the old school, but it'll have a lot of new things in it too.
