Spectrophobia: Fear Itself

Spectrophobia (from Latin: spectrum, "ghost") is a kind of specific phobia involving a morbid fear of mirrors and one's own reflections. Regina Olsen never really fit in. As a child, she was abandoned by her parents, and constantly picked on due to her heterochromia, and as an adult, she only seems to make enemies anywhere she goes. Today she starts a new job as a forensic investigator with the Blue Basin City Police Department's Homicide Unit. She hopes that this new start is what she needs to get her life in order. But on her first case, she gets entangled in a decades old murder investigation, and gets thrown head first into a wild goose chase after an enigmatic cult leader who believes that creatures from another world reside in our reflections, and seems to know much more about Regina's past than any stranger should. http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/e45953bc11568100bba1f67fda31900503bfaf1d.jpg Here is a fresh new project I have started, and completed 90% of the technical work on "Spectrophobia" a survival thriller type game that I hope will turn out as good as I hope! You play Regina Olsen, a timid forensic investigator with average physical capability (yay suspense!) She gets thrown into a fight for her life and has to rely on her wits to keep alive in a world of evil and darkness where everything has a sinister side to it, which is revealed by (you guessed it) MIRRORS! You, as the player, get to rely on a variety of weapons and usable items that can be picked up and wielded by Regina, and are managed by a simple, familiar menu system. http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/ce08a46900f2efcf32962a29ddd3411a29e2d4f9.jpg The Items you can pick up are of 4 distinct categories- Special Items (Left) Health Items (Middle) Ammunition (Right) and Weapons (not shown) http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/3307286e5d489ae9b1c626ee1bc6362f905cccdc.jpg As you can see in the picture of the menu, you can hold several of the same item (as indicated by a number at the top right of the item) for use later on in the game. For example, you can find several health drinks as you explore the expansive areas, and when you health gets low, you can go to your menu, throw back a few, and be right as rain! As you may know, I pride myself on being able to create spectacular atmosphere in my levels. This game will of course be no exception. http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/575ebf94c56e7fd201707e764b709bd52d2ea1b7.jpg As you can see in the pic above, when the mirrors in the game reveal a darker side of every day places, like this apartment building, things can get a little dark, and Regina has her trusty pocket flashlight. But this is not something to get too comfortable with, for THEY are attracted to light. And since Regina is on the OTHER side of the mirror now, if they catch up to her, there is nothing to stop the dark denizens of the mirror world from destroying her body and soul. I hope you all enjoyed this little preview of 'Spectrophobia' and that you look forward to playing. I am about 99% done with character and menu programming, and just have to finish up programming 4 more in game pick ups, so this wont be in production for too much longer before you can all get your hands on it. And next time you look into a mirror, be quick. Im making a horror level called nyctophobia (what a coincidence!) with a flashlight that has a...how do I put it...you know when you point a light in a dusty place and the light forms an angle? Yeah, one of those. It's also pretty weird that the enemies on my project are also attracted to the light (don't get me wrong, not accusing of "copying" my idea as It's not public yet) but staying in the dark will slowly turn the character insane so its a choice. @potunator: wow! What a fun coincidence! I like the idea of darkness making you insane, though I have no plans to implement it in my game, it is a fun idea. @biorogue: thanks, it wont be too long now.
