Hidy Ho Sackfriends! I am here to let you know that Episode 12 of Pocket Moon Podcast is now available for you to download. On this episode we are joined again by SalieriAAX (who joined us on the Vita Game Jam Episode). You'll hear the three of us talk about upgrading to a new version of LBP, accidentally impaling a family member with a move controller, the Contraption Challenge, and so much more.

As usual, we have a number of ways for you to listen:

once again, great podcast. I laughed, I cried, well mostly laughed. Simon was a great guest to have on. Great topics covered. No real feedback to offer but to just say it was great and I enjoyed listening to it. Nice that you added in the topic links. Can you believe it, I actually listened to it today.

oh, on the topic of selling consoles or game devices. I remember when we were expecting my first kid, I sold my Snes, my Game gear, my Sega Genesis and my Sega CD plus about 100 games. I still regret doing that. I miss my Snes and Game Gear. Now I have to use emulators to play those great games like Super Metroid and Sonic. I'll not sell another system.

I have a 360 and the kinect and find that it's about the most useless peripheral I have. Can't stand it.

I have two questions or rather two things to discuss this time around.
1. Arcades. I love them and if I happen to be at the mall then I have to go in and at least play one, though some of the games now want a buck to play. I really love the pinball machines and if I didn't feel weird being in there due to my age I could stay quite some time. Do either of you play the occasional arcade game, whether it be at an actual arcade or Chucky Cheese or something?

2. Movies to games and vice versa I believe you touched on this in a previous episode, talking about the Risk movie. But that is a board game to movie and I don't really recall if you talked about video game movies. I think games made from movies are definitely better than the other way around. There have been a ton of them over the years and I can't think of which one may have been the first...maybe the Mario movie, that was so horrible. One of the things that really bug me is seeing a trailer for a movie say The Incredibles for example. I went to a movie rental place..better explain what that is. They used to have these buildings where you could go and get a membership then you could actually rent a video game or movie (VHS, DVD) and take it home with you. Weird right? Anyway, I was at one such establishment and the video game was available before the movie even came out. I forgot where I was going with that.

3. I said two but thought of another one. Do either of you or (insert current guest) use video game rental services such as Gamefly? I miss being able to go to the video store and being able to rent a game for a few days and kind of try before you buy type thing. That's what I did with LBP1. I rented it, took it home and played for about an hour. Took it back to the video store went to Walmart and bought LBP1. Some games I would rent and beat in a few hours so I knew it wasn't worth spending the $60 on.

Thanks for the feedback biorogue, and a huge heaping of thanks for the constant stream of questions. I remember back for our early episodes Tom and I would be wishing that we could get any questions at all and now we have awesome people like you who ask great questions on a weekly basis which give us awesome topics to discuss.

Unfortunately, I can't write much more in response since most of my response is going to end up being given on episode 13

It sounds like almost everyone says that they never would sell their consoles because of heartbreak from the past. I actually have never sold an old console, so I am lucky enough not to have experienced that, but I have regretted selling games. Who would have ever though a game like FFVII would be worth something some day??? I was actually hanging only to any game I thought might be rare at the time, but I would have never guessed that FFVII would have been rare since it was such a huge title.

wait, FFVII is rare now? *checks Amazon* Holy snikeys! I wish I'd bought two of them now! $250! Wow. I've only ever sold one game. I had bought this racing game because the ads for it made it look awesome. I bought it, this was for the PS1? no for the PS2 and it just sucked for a lack of a better term. I took it to gamestop and of course they only gave me like 15 bucks for it and it was a new title.
I have ALL my PC games and still play them. Though now I have to use Doxbox to run most of them. All my Sierra games, X-com. oh, oh, oh. Have you seen the footage of the upcoming Xcom game!? O.M.G. Wow. I'll be picking that one up. I still play No One Lives Forever: A Spy in H.A.R.M.s Way, Outpost, Bioforge (that's where the "Bio" comes from in my name) I have tons and tons of PC/Dos games. I just can't stand to part with them.
My Nascar Racing 2003 has become a collector's item due to Papyrus not making any more because EA acquired exclusive Nascar rights (which was a crock of bull!), Sierra shutting the servers down and the huge modding community.
Check out how much it is on Amazon now. Nascar Racing 2003 (http://www.amazon.com/NASCAR-Racing-2003-Season-Pc/dp/B000077WA5)
so I am extremely careful when I put it into my drive. I guess I should set up a virtual drive so I won't have to mess with the cd.

@biorogue: Yeah, I still can't figure out why FFVII got rare in the first place. It sold millions of copies, so where did they all go?

I would have never guessed that that Nascar game would have gone up in value so much. Not because it is Nascar, but because games that have a year in their title usually go way down in value the following year. I guess that it helps that they didn't make one the following year

@Cory: Yeah, I have been playing too many games without achievements. I am currently playing 4 games on iOS and NONE of them have achievements :-( Just wait until I start playing one with them though!

They are actually made in a "pan" designed with that particular purpose in mind

They're fritters if anything.

By calling them pancakes, you're robbing the word 'pancake' of all of its semantic capital. FOR SHAME!

Tom, I reject your aebleskriver/pancake taxonomy. That is no more a pancake than I am!My god. It makes so much more sense now. YOU ARE A PANCAKE!

They are actually made in a "pan" designed with that particular purpose in mind Yes, EXACTLY. Thank you! It's a cake made in a pan. Pan + cake. Pancake.

Ebelskiver/aebleskiver batter is almost identical to typical pancake batter as well - the main difference is that with ebelskiver batter you beat the egg whites before adding them to the mix. Makes 'em light and fluffy.

Oh hey! That's an idea for another minigame. Beat the egg whites too much and you end up with meringue, beat them too little and you and up with waffles. Beat the egg whites just right and you are rewarded with delicious ebelskivers!

Those sure do look good :-) I will have to agree with Simon/Salieri that they don't seem to really fall into the pancake (or Waffle) category Well, as you did me the favor of introducing me to lingonberries, I will do the same for you with ebelskiver. Go find a nice breakfast spot that serves them and let me know what you think. Then, if you don't agree that they are pancakes, I will concede my argument.

They're fritters if anything.

By calling them pancakes, you're robbing the word 'pancake' of all of its semantic capital. FOR SHAME!I just think you're jealous that Belgium won't share its waffles with you.

They look more like doughnut holes to me...

Taffey's argument is invalid.
yeah, where I come from those are called doughnut holes.Nah, donuts are fried! Ebelskivers cook in a pan. I would like to note, however, that donuts are amazingly delicious... mmmmmmmmmmm, donuts.

Look yummy though. Hmm, think I'll make breakfast for dinner tonight. Pancakes?Breakfast for dinner is the best. Thing. Ever.

'Cook in a pan'? That is frying. Pancakes are fried. Not that I want to ally myself with the doughnut crowd: doughnuts are deep fried.

The chief property of a pancake has to be its flatness. 'Flat as a pancake'. Batter is far too common across so many different types of food for aebleskivers to be considered pancakes on the similarity of their mix and the same goes for the fact that they are pan-fried.

haven't listened yet, I must admit. BUT I have it downloading to my iphone as we speak

I think games made from movies are definitely better than the other way around.

I don't really like video games adapted from movies in most cases, as they're generally nothing more than pretty half-hearted attempts at gathering more revenue. But that being said, I'd probably agree with you on 99% of cases, films like FF:Advent Children, Spirits Within etc really disappointed me. They didn't feel right...

Mario *shudder* Tomb Raider.. the list goes on.

However, there are exceptions to the rule (and this all depends on personal preference, of course)

I was impressed by Resident Evil (only the first film mind... the rest sort of sucked IMHO) and there's a few others, like Mortal Kombat.. which I admit to like. It's not as good as it could have been, but it made me laugh

One thing I really LOVED which was adapted from a video game (and a pretty bland video game as far as I'ma ware) is Gungrave - an anime series with amazing visuals, epic music and genuinely great voice acting (which is unusual for an english dub. Yes, I admit to being a bit of a purist when it comes to my anime)

So... I've completely lost my train of thought.... anyhow, I think the conversation could actually be pretty heated I'd love to hear what everyone thinks!

wait, FFVII is rare now? *checks Amazon* Holy snikeys! I wish I'd bought two of them now! $250!

I am looking forward to having the discussion about games to movies. I would go into my feelings on the topic here, but I will leave that for episode 13 :-) Thanks for your thoughts on the topic rialrees, you actually reminded me of one movie that I really like which I had forgotten about, which is pretty sad seeing as I claim it to be one of my favorite movies ;-P

As for FFVII, I didn't realize it had gone up in value that much. I thought that it was around $100 but I hadn't checked for a while. I actually did buy it again for maybe $40 used a few years ago just because I had to have it since it is one of my favorite games :-)

Number 12 was a fun episode to listen to as much for the content as for the interaction between the three of y'all. It is also easier to get into and listen to the podcast I think mostly because I've gotten into the process of listening on a regular basis.

I find the digressions to be less distracting as I did when I first started listening but I also think that you've done a lot to reign in the obscurity and length of the tangents as well.

The level links work out great as an accompaniment to the podcast and turns out to be a much needed addition that I never thought of before. I have felt that a great thing that could also be done was similar to what y'all put on the Vita game-jam episode, a table-of-contents.

It helps so people can more easily get to the sections they want to hear in time-critical situations but also to lets listeners know just what is in the podcast. Looking back on earlier podcasts there isn't much other than some general descriptions to let people know just what was in each on. After you've got another ten podcasts made it could be tricky to go back and try to find the one where you discuss X topic if it wasn't one of the main topics and if there isn't a bit more annotation for each episode.

On the other hand this may not be a problem at all. I'm just combining a thought with some speculations.

-----

It also looks like it is becoming quite a production to get the podcast posts on each of the LBP forums. Some forums running slightly different code and some tags working in some spots but not others. Then in the follow-up you are always hopping around from forum to forum in the reply stage.

I like having a post on the forums but maybe if there was a central location for the heart of the posts it'd be less work on the two of you. I know that most of the time the two of you are already jumping around from forum to forum during the course of the day so this may not be any additional bother.

It just feels that the podcast is maturing, getting more sophisticated and growing in general. Maybe a future step in the evolution is to get your Pocket Moon Podcast site where you can put all the nice descriptions, formatting, links and whatever else comes out of it.

Just some more thoughts.

-----

Waffles or pancakes? I'll be in heaven any day of the week when I get great tasting waffles or pancakes, I'm not too picky. I'd go with waffles if I had to choose just because I've had less chance to eat them therefore they have more sentimental value. I like the combination of crisp and fluffy as well as the geometric presentation of waffles.

Both pancakes and waffles can really be a sweet pastry dish on one end or a stomach filling meal on the other end depending on how you do them. Why not add the Japanese pancake to the consideration if you are looking for more character in your pancake.

Okonomiyaki is just full of yummy stuff, has its own character and texture and can really fill you up.

http://beyondboulder.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/okonomiyaki-blog.jpg

It is strictly a food item and not a desert dish like the more versatile pancake/waffle can be but it is still a good time. Oh yeah.

-----

On the question side I'm curious about the single/multi-player aspects of games and which y'all prefer. Is the single player component more compelling to you than the multi-player aspect? Naturally one typical answer is that it depends on the game and the genre but beyond this does there need to be multi-player hooks in the game for you to want to play it or should it be self-sufficient enough that you can play it on your own?

There is also a distinction between multi-player and social games. LBP is a good amalgamation of single player, multi-player and social gaming. You can play LBP levels by yourself or with friends/strangers. You can see the scores of all your friends and try to compete. You can create on your own or with friends or just hand out and chat.

How important is a social aspect to gaming in your opinion?

Cheers

Thanks for the awesome post Trindall :-) I really look forward to hearing your feedback on every podcast, and getting your message in Scramble with Friends had me excited because I knew the feedback was coming soon!

I'm not sure how much trouble it would be for Tom to mark out the different points in the podcast where we transition to new topics. He does all of the editing, so if anyone was going to do it then it would probably be him since if I did it we would have to wait another 90 minutes (at least) after it is ready for me to listen to it and mark everything down, but I'd be willing to do that if I was able to get to it right away :-) Maybe it is something that I will even start editing into future podcast posts so that when I get the chance to listen to the podcast later on in the day I can just mark down where stuff takes place. Excellent point!

Posting on LBL, LBPC, LBP, and LBN is a bit of work because every single site has slightly different formatting so I have to make sure that everything is perfect and I always manage to mess up somehow and have to go back through and edit stuff I can't complain, though, because the time it takes me to post is only a fraction of the time it takes Tom to edit the podcast, and I can do a lot of copying and pasting now that I have posts on each site that are in the correct format for that site. Back when we were starting the podcast (around episode 1 and 2) we talked about getting a site but we wanted to wait until we figured out if anyone even wanted to listen to us in the first place. Perhaps we are getting to that point now. It is certainly something that Tom and I need to discuss.

So is that picture of the Japanese pancake? And that is not a dessert pancake?! That thing looks incredible!!! There were a lot of places in china that had Japanese food, but I never saw one of those. Then again, a lot of food can only be found in certain areas so I may have just been in the pancake hating part of China

That's a great question about Single and Multiplayer, and one that applies very well to LBP. I could certainly write a few paragraphs about it right now, but I will restrain myself and hold off for a future podcast :-)

Thanks again for the awesome feedback Trindall!

I agree that there have been a lot of half aced attempts at porting movies/tv shows to games but there have been some excellent ones.
007 The world is not enough on the PS2 was a great game from movie, IMO, as was
Ghost Busters,
a few of the Aliens games,
LOTR,
Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi on the SNES,
Goldeneye 007
Blade Runner (the one made my Westwood studios, the makers of some great P n C games) this was a brilliant P n C based on the movie, well loosely. Different plot but same idea
I may get shot here, but I liked the Enter the Matrix game *wince*
The Godfather
Spongebob battle for bikini bottom--great game based on the cartoon show
to name a select few.

for those that haven't seen the Mario movie, it came out in the late 80's and here is a taste

I saw the Mario Bros movie many many years ago and needn't have subjected myself to the trailer but... but wait... isn't that HIGHLY respected actress and opera director FIONA SHAW?

What the heck was she doing in it? I don't even remember the character of 'Lena' that she plays.

I'm beginning to get confused. Biorogue makes me think we are talking about movies turned into games, but rialrees makes me think that we are talking about games turned into movies. I guess we are just talking about cross-overs in general (movies-->games or games-->movies).

I only recently saw the Mario movie. I really enjoy watching terrible 80's movies, and I remember wanting to see the Mario movie but not getting to since I was young and my parents weren't very excited about it. It was entertaining to watch, but boy was it terrible. The only redeeming quality it has is really that it is funny to watch because it is so bad. There were a few scenes that made absolutely no sense and because of that I was entertained :-)

I'm enjoying this topic either way we go. BTW, the Jurassic Park game on SNES was incredible. It had over the head 3rd person exploration mixed with FPS sections. And there are a lot of good Star Wars games.

Oh... and... um...... I enjoyed Enter the Matrix as well...

Um... none taken.

Utterly speechless.

Utter - to softly speak
Speechless - without speech

Pun accepted?.....please?

The original question was crossover games in general be they games to movies or vice versa and I had forgot about the Jurassic Park game! That one was good.
I love watching 80's movies too, like Better Off Dead with that great line,"sorry your mom blew up, Ricky" Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Valley Girl, Earth Girls are Easy, Electric Dreams, the Fletch movies etc, etc. etc.
I hadn't seen Better off Dead in a while now. I love that paperboy on the bike that follow John Cusac through the whole movie "I want my two dollars!"
Wait, you said "terrible 80's movies" and all mine are good. Hmm..I'll toss in Howard the Duck

Ok, so that may actually be the most painfully strained pun ever. I'm surprised that, if as you say you hadn't intended it, you saw fit to flag it up as unintentional. Nevertheless it can go down in the ledger.

I have loved a few movie/game crossovers and also hated many. Mario Bros was truly horrible, as was as much as I could remember of the Doom movie. I found Tomb Raider to be vaguely watchable and really enjoyed the first Resident Evil movie.

As for the other way around: I really liked the LOTR action games and actually quite enjoyed 3rd Age even though I knew in my heart it was pretty lame. Obv Goldeneye is a given though I don't think I've especially enjoyed any other Bond games.

Jurassic Park, now that's a special case. I had a Jurassic Park game on Mega Drive and all I can remember about it was that it was really hard and not much fun, but I loved it because it was Jurassic Park! Jurassic Park even trumps Star Wars when it comes to making a game appealing by licence alone.

Has there ever been a good Star Trek game? I would like to know immediately if so.

heck yes there have been good star trek games.
Star Trek: Judgement Rites(DOS), Star Trek: 25th Anniversary(DOS), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek Pinball (don't laugh) The only ones I really really liked. ST: Elite Force meh, I played through it, but..it was ok..I guess.

Games to movies and movies to games... Both topics work for me. I think we're going to have to discuss both of those at some point on the podcast.

Of course all this stemmed from Battleship as a game-to-movie-to-game which, as far as I am aware, is the first atrocity of its kind.

Great Star Trek games... Let's see. There were a couple I played on the PC ages ago but I don't remember what either of them were called. One was a hex-based strategy game (loosely based on the boardgame version) and another was a point-and-click type of RPG thing. It played a bit like Captain Blood but with Star Trek characters instead.

Another great show guys, thanks.

Glad that you liked it Xenon! Thanks for the feedback :-)

Sorry about the double post but I wanted to stop by to say that we are NOT recording a full episode tomorrow so I will NOT be on the chat rooms at LittleBigPlanetarium because Tom is not feeling well. I will be conducting an interview tomorrow, but that is all that will be recorded. We hope to record the rest of the podcast early next week.

Great episode guys! I'm really glad you guys talked about Journey for a little bit, I played through that game today and was curious to hear what other people thought. (I personally loved it).

Looking forward to Episode 13!

Also, if any video game could make a good movie, I think heavy rain could. Though it wouldn't be even close to the same without interactivity, if the adaptation was done right, it could be amazing. (if they fix the plot holes!)

Oh and Taffey the word meme is pronounced meeem. Not me-me. I used to do the same

possible future discussions:

1: Just as Meccano inspired children to pursue a career in mechanics or construction, could LBP inspire a generation to become programmers or designers?

2: In light of all the bad press games get, how important is LBP in terms of offering an alternative argument? (teach kids to create and use their imagination, not just KILL)

3: would it be viable to have a separate server with a paid subscription for the creator who could then charge a small price for people playing his/her level?

4: Should Sony consider making a children's program with Sackboys and Sackgirls and get Stephen Fry to voice it?

@Valmassoi: Thanks for the feedback! Glad that you enjoyed the podcast and were happy to hear about Journey!

Great point about Heavy Rain! I actually haven't played the game through but I have played the demo and I was impressed by the excellent presentation. One of these days I will get around to playing it through...

@GribbleGrunger: Thanks for all of the questions. Tom and I really do appreciate these because it gives us a nice opportunity to interact with a lot more people on the podcast since we can't have everyone on the podcast at once They are great questions too! I really want to answer now but I will hold off until the podcast :-) Now if only Tom would get healthy again...

It turns out that we ARE going to record the podcast at 14:00GMT if anyone is interested in stopping by LittleBigPlanetarium's chat room to offer thoughts, opinions, or just chat a bit :-)

I posted last night saying we weren't going to record because I had been talking to Tom about how he wasn't feeling well and wouldn't be able to do the podcast, but he took a turn for the better and texted me this morning saying we were good to go :-D
