Poll: Would you pay for The Memorizer in LBP2?

Archive: 20 posts

Would you pay for Level Kit DLC if the primary thing added was The Memorizer gadget?

In case you haven't heard, The Memorizer is a fantastic new item that LBP Vita is adding to that game. It lets a creator save player-specific data and use it across any of that creator's levels at any time in the future. This opens up a huge opportunity for epic creations that make meaningful connections regarding player actions over time and place. The possibilities are endless. You could have a proper RPG that spans multiple levels and tracks all the player's skills and inventory. Or maybe a non-linear story platformer series that adjusts opportunities based on what you've already done. Or a carnival of mini-game levels with a prize booth at the end. Or you could remember the highest level of difficulty a player has beaten in your arcade hame and allow them to resume where they left off. Or maybe a robot battle level where players configure their robots and you remember their configuration in future bouts. Or maybe you just remember their preference for music track. Or anything else you could think of.

It would be so great if we had something like this in LBP2, wouldn't it? But it would take work. Quite possibly a great deal of work. Somebody has to pay for that work. Would you be willing to help, by buying the DLC once it comes out?

[PS: There's other cool stuff coming in LBP Vita too. Lots of it. Sure, it would be great if there was just a LBP Vita Cool Stuff Kit for LBP2 that included all of that. But then LBP2 owners might be less likely to invest in LBP Vita. And Sony, fearing that, might likely say no to any such DLC. So I'm not polling on that right now. This is just about the Memorizer. ]

To get all the (PS3 compatible) Vita features in LBP2 would be great.2012-03-11 05:17:00

i find this really odd to be honest. absolutely no-one was up for a separate server for highly rated creators (?25 a year. you have to have at least two highly rated levels. people then pay 20p to play your levels on the separate server), but most people would willingly pay for something that should be free?2012-03-11 14:35:00

Probably, but I'd rather pay a bit more if it meant getting all the new features (where possible) from LBP Vita onto the PS3 platform.

...most people would willingly pay for something that should be free?

Why should it be free? It wasn't part of the original game you paid for.

Isn't that like saying: if you bought a house with a fitted kitchen but no dishwasher, and a nearby developer built a bunch of houses which did have a dishwasher, that you should be entitled to a free dishwasher?

Creator Pack 1 (http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en/game_guide/ps3/downloadable_content/creator_pack_1/) was free yet its contents were not in the original game I bought. I would not pay for this tool by itself but if it were bundled in a kit, then probably so.

I would pay for the new features in LBP2 but realistically, they won't do that becasue then we're "less likely" to buy the new game. Just like what it looks like Call of Duty does and what guitar hero/Rock Band used to do. I would hope though that they see that the big fans would both buy the DLC and pay for it all over again in a new game.2012-03-11 20:00:00

I think it's quite complicated. They won't make any money if they immediately add it to LBP2, but they will seem like cheapskates if they don't end up giving us that tool somehow. I mean, they know this is something everyone's always been asking for. Even before LBP2's release, I remember a certain "Magic Bag" was rumoured to be a new Powerup in the game. Everyone was excited, but it never came out. Releasing it on a portable console does show how simple it is to make such a tool.

But don't get me wrong, I know we don't live in the Care Bears' world, and I know MediaMolecule would rather earn money than seem kind and generous, but when gamers see what's possible to do with the Memorizer, they'll probably request Mm to add the tool to LBP2, and it will be tricky not to take heed of those requests (unless that tool turns out to be a completely useless damb squib!)

Maybe they'll add it later to the game though, just like they added water to LBP2 a while after the POTC pack came out.

So if a company once gave something away for free, then they always should in the future?

I once got a free Big Mac from McDonald's, so therefore all my future Big Macs should be free as well. Cool. I'll give that a try next time I'm there.

and I'm sure that was a promotional gimmick or coupon. That wasn't the case with the creator pack. It was hey, we have some new tools or updated tools for you guys to use. the slice n dice tool was free right? I didn't have to buy the Move kit to be able to use it. So they've already set a precedent with giving new tools for free. And knowing Micky d's I'm sure that "free" big mac came only when you purchased a large soda or some other item from the menu. Bundle?2012-03-11 21:58:00

Well, it was just for an analogy, so technically it was a complete lie.

True, but the paint tool wasn't free, so they've also set a precedent of charging for new tools.

That's not really the point though. The point was that saying it "should" be free just seems a bit arrogant. It implies that the time invested by the developer(s) of the feature has less value than that of the poster, or "I'm more important than you, so you should give me some money".

It's probably moot anyway. If Sony have any sense they'll bundle all the new Vita features into a true PS3 sequel, and charge you $60 for it.

I agree that it would be cool to have a pack that included everything from LBP Vita, and I agree that that isn't going to happen. The Memorizer all by itself seems like a huge feature to me, and one LBP2 could get without really diminishing the appeal of LBP Vita.

Regarding "they owe it to us for free": I think this is also like saying Uncharted 2 should be patched to add the new melee combat that came out in Uncharted 3. Drake ought to be able to fight like that after all. But nobody says that because we all know it's a separate game and clearly that would take some work ...just like this would.

More practically speaking, they were actively still hard at work on LBP1 when they put out the creator pack. And they were actively hard at work on the Move Pack when the other goodies were released for free. I have no reason to think anybody is hard at work on expanding LBP2's functionality at the moment. All those coders and testers and all the other essential people are probably now working on other things. People would have to be put to work on any new DLC, Sony would have to pay them, and that just wouldn't happen unless this work was going to generate revenue.

Because it can? Many things comes for free with updates in many other games , the reason why we have paid DLC is Sony model of distributing content... or rather how extra content on this gen consoles works

Just look Stracraft 2, each bigger updates new trigger blocks show up that you can use in your maps.

Pretty weak rationale. It's up to each business to determine the best strategy for its continued success. If they screw it up big time, they fail, which means no more LBP for anyone - although maybe that'd be a good thing for the serious addicts.

Anyways, I ain't changin' my mind 'til I get my free dishwasher.

In my opinion, we should get what we get in LBP Vita in LBP2. After all, you can take costumes from the PS3 version and put them onto the Vita version, can't you? So why shouldn't we be have the same tools? Just my opinion, but if they let us do that, then I feel like it only makes sense to give us the Memorizer, which so many people could find use for, even if we do get it a while after LBP Vita does.2012-03-13 02:59:00

Well whether it should or shouldn't be free doesn't really matter to me all i know is if it came in a kit with new DLC like the muppets or something then yes i would spend money to get it.
I honestly think they would make a lot of money from it as well. All they have to do is add it to the next pack and everyone will want it.

Hell I still think we should be able to buy new level space on our earth as well.

Well, I'm just going to throw in my opinion... I know very little about what LBP Vita is going to be like and stuff like that so, correct me if I say something wrong.

If I'm not mistaken, the PS Vita has a lot more features on in. For example: Touch Screen on both sides. If LBP Vita involves this any way, then there is no way MM can put it on PS3, so, you can't have all the features of LBP Vita on the PS3 if this is true. Also, since MM is putting a lot more things in LBP Vita, they will end up putting it in a LBP3 or something like that. I doubt they are going to finish the LBP Vita, and discontinue the LBP series, right? It took them a few years to make LBP2 so LBP3 won't be here until 2013 or 2014, sadly.

Anyways, if MM does put the "Memorizer" in a DLC pack in LBP2, people will get it whether or not it costs money. The "Memorizer" will change LBP2 in such a way that everyone will need to have it. I personally will definitely be buying it. And I don't agree that we "deserve to have it free". I don't think I need to give an example why because there is like 10 already in this post

I might be echoing what you were just saying, but in any case I agree that everybody would be patched to be able to play levels that make use of the Memorizer "technology", but Mm could (and I'm thinking would) sell the goodies needed to create such levels as a paid DLC level kit. This is what they did when they introduced water, for example, back in LBP1.

well the question was very specific. whilst i say i don't think you should pay for the Memoriser, i would concede that if it came with other features including new costumes, materials and stickers, then i would probably be happy to pay. not for just one feature though

Sounds like some one needs a new dishwasher.
