Helicopter Attack, Paintinator Survival Chalenge by Hex Production.....s

Archive: 9 posts

The level is called Helicopter Attack, paintinator survival chalenge, its located in the South America right next to Timmy's Dream. I would only like about about 10 F4F participants at the moment, im interested in ideas on how to make the gameplay more interesting.

I had been working on a level for awhile and decided to take a break from it for a few days, during that break I made this and a story type level based off the same concept and gameplay. Right now this is the only one published, its based off the Heli-Attack flash game, you use the Paintinator to fight an infinite amount of helicopters. Each helicopter drops points and at the end you can shoot open a box for some of the objects I used including the Paintinator itself.

Hey man, you can call me Rambo from now on lol. I just spent 20 minutes decimating those choppers with the paintgun, man that was fun! I am not much a fan of mini-games but I can honestly say this one is my personal favorite from all those I have played. Where to begin? Well, let's start at the beginning lol. Allowing the player to choose their own music to play to is ingenius. I have not seen this done in any other levels and the fact that you are bringing such an original idea to the table even though this is only a mini-game is inspiring. I love the way you handled the background. It's looks lke an assembly line that is putting togther the choppers which not only adds some eye candy but actually makes sense within the context of the mini-game, very cool. The lighting was great and the choppers looked cool. I also loved the box at the scoreboard that rewards you with goodies when sho up. Again this is an original idea and it really was a great touch. Of course I have some suggestions so here they are:

Suggestions:

- There was some trouble with the cam zones. As far as I can tell you have 3 cam zones and the probelm occurs when switching from one part of the screen to another which sometimes results in a plasma ball to the face. Try readjusting the zones and test to make sure they are as perfect as can be.

- I like the design of your choppers but I would have liked a bit more decoration on them. You know, a few stickers here and there to really kick things up. This is easy for you to add so please consider it.

- Sometimes the choppers would get "stuck" and I would just be firing at them off screen. I don't know what you could do about this other then lower the barriers that they exit from.

- Half the time the point bubbles dropped in boxes that were inaccessible. I would manage to grab some of those bubbles by jumping around on the box but I could never get all of them. Was this intentional.

- Sometimes a chopper would dissolve from a single paintinator shot, strange. Don't really know why this happend but I thought you should know.

I am amazed no one else has commented yet, I guess it's because you don't have pics which is a shame. I gave this level 5 stars and hearted. There are definitely ways to improve things but the bottom line is I had a lot of fun and can only imagine how much better it would be when played with a group of friends. Really great work Hex and I encourage everyone to check it out

*EDIT*

Forgot to mention I have the number 1 score (that's only natural lol) and I formally challenge any other forum member to beat it

OCK must have found a sweet spot or something... cause after 6 or 7 plays I was only able to get about 1100.

Anyway I have to agree with OCK on the points he made. It's a fun challenge level that IMO is only about 75% done.

- I experienced inaccessible points boxes a few times. I'm sure you can fix that.

- Thank you for not forcing prize bubbles on me. The only suggestion I have here is that you put a glass front or even no front on the box at the finish. I was a little too eager to get into the box the first time and got barraged with prize bubbles. I have my own little mini -game when playing user levels..it's called how many of your prize bubbles can I avoid..lol. I hate them like the plague because of the profile error.

- Definitely put some more decoration into the look of the chopper...my sound was kinda low, but do you have the chopper sound effect playing?

- I'm not familiar with the mini game you based this off of, but are the moving pieces in the background supposed to resemble something from that game? Not to try and influence your level design, but it seemed as though they didn't do anything at all and that space could be used to make a more polished experience. Like moving the prize box/pistons into the third plane and leaving the chopper in the first two. This would hide any pistons attached and would look like your chopper is actually flying on its own. You would have to change the glass in the thin plane to a different material and decorate a scene. Make a / in the back plane so that the prize bubbles fall down to either the left or right. Then the player has to make his way to either side of the screen to collect the points from a hole while avoiding the plasma balls. Food for thought.

- Hide the mag switches that appear when the chopper explodes.

- Love the juke box!! Great fun little level with tons of potential.

I didn't get so very far in it...I'm a lot better at the flash version. You might consider recreating that arena. It would also be awesome if you added in weapons that drop from time to time. Though that might not work so well. I did encounter one glitch, or at least, I think it was a glitch. After I destroyed the second copter, a box dropped with points in it. But there was no way to get the points inside the box. 2009-01-02 01:00:00

The helicopters stopped spawning after around the 6th one I shot down.
Some of the prize bubble holders did not dissolve and fell down to the ground with the bubbles still inside. This happened twice.

With some touching up [ex. the gun on the helicopter could look more like a gun instead of a stick. The music player at the beginning, when tuning it, it will activate maybe two or three different music players instead of one] this level could please even the most picky person [me].

Edit: looks like what I've said has been mentioned previously.

Alright I will take a look at it tommorow, sounds like the point boxes arent dissolving on some of the choppers and maybe even a spawn glitch. I will also make sure to leave feedback on your levels.
I will also add some decorations to the choppers, I didn't realize there were chopper sound effects I will probably try to add that.

EDIT: Done, done, and done. Expect feedback for your levels by tomorrow.

Man, took me forever to find this thread again. Finally got around to playing this, and I'm about to replay it a bunch of times to try and get up on the board at a decent position (yeah right... no way am I gettin' over OCK lol).

I was having a total blast until about the 4th helicopter when it stopped spawning... don't know what happened, but this is a great mini-game. Glad to see high-grade creators doing this kind of stuff.

The music selector is amazing, albeit a little touchy, and I agree with most of what other's have said here positive and negative - it's mostly a small details thing.

Hi Hexagon,

I really enjoyed playing your mini game, but it felt like it was not a finished level that needs a little more work.

Pros:

Great concept. Who doesn't like shooting down helicopters.
I liked that you had a music selector. Nice touch.
It was fun.
It was fun with more than one player.

Cons:

The helicopter design is good but I think you may need to add more stickers and update the gun with a gradient sticker to make it look rounded. This may work.
The point system is a little strange. I didn't notice that the helicopters were dropping bubbles after being destroyed until the 3rd or 4th. Maybe you can change the point system to drop bubbles into a collection container near the score board and grab all the points you scored after you die or maybe make the helicopters drop a point bubble each time you shoot them. Just throwing out ideas.
The board just felt unfinished for some reason.

I really had a good time playing but it just needs a little more wow and after playing your other levels I'm sure you can do it.

Yeah thanks, a lot of the problem comes into the fact I made it over a busy weekend. I thought of a way to avoid the spawn issues as well as a better point system. I will probably implement them later on.2009-01-15 16:37:00
