Are There Optimistic People?

Archive: 20 posts

I know I sound a bit stupid, but I just want to know. I've seen and heard so many negative things and people. They have no hope whatsoever. Give up. We're all doomed. We can't do anything about it. Honestly, I think too much of the tragedy in the world is publicized. What they need to make clear is that they're trying, and that they have been for a long time. Life isn't fair, but you shouldn't be so melodramatic. We've made it through loads of problems, ones even bigger than the ones we're experiencing today. Now, I'm not saying that we WILL make it, but it's not the end of the world (please don't take this as a chance to bring up that 2012 baloney). I'm just wondering why some people's spirits are shattered so easily.2012-03-10 15:17:00

I'm optimistic.
You do realise you've opened a negative thread...By giving out to people?...
I dunno, I'll get an angry response...But I'll laugh as I take it apart

If a pawn thinks it's a queen it'll be disappointed when it's unable to make a decisive move, yet together pawns act as a tide of force unequalled by any other piece. Pessimism and hopelessness can stem from a misapprehension of the power you can exert or your position with regard to your fellow pawns. This goes for nations as well as individuals.

Being a queen player is the sign of a noob, which in chess is synonymous with top-down and short-term thinking.

i'm both Optimistic and Pessimistic maybe you could say. but normally i'm more Optimistic thesedays then anything i think. well more like i do my best to avoid anything that is drama and or anything that could put stress in my life. i just try to relax and take life fairly easy no matter how lame life can seem at times. life is normally only as bad or good as you believe it to be. if something is hurting your life it's best to cut it out of your life. and also a good idea to never want to overly much in life. the more things you want, the harder and less happy your life will be IMO. *mew2012-03-10 16:23:00

Well hello, serious thread. ...Oh, what the heck...

I am sort of cynically cheerful. I see bad things throughout the world, but it doesn't crush me. You could say, I am either used to it, or haven't been terribly effected yet. Without having experienced anything other than life, I don't have anything else to compare it to. x3 So I stay neutral, vaguely amused, or just carry on about it.

Doesn't mean I do not forge forward with my personal morals, or try to make things better, but thats a choice I made. n‿~

To quote the world's shortest pessimistic poem:

Hope? Nope.

Every Anon I follow on twitter who keeps up with the middle east says its the end of the world because they think WW3 between Iran, Isreal, China, Russia, and the US is about to start and we'll all be blown away in a nuclear holocaust.(Because they've been threatening each other recently and preparing for war) Im hoping those countries are intelligent enough to realize that when you nuke your enemy, you will be nuked back and not start a nuclear war.. but when it comes to people who are religious they dont care because they think they'll be in paradise when they die..so who knows.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, stupidity is infinite, intelligence is finite..

Negativity and positivity are both contagious.
As we become inundated with news of war, murder, and human degradation, as well as the soulless manufactured profit driven interests of advertisement and (a huge slice of) commercial music, it's really easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of bad vibes.

But being aware is half the battle. I'm a bit of a new-age hippie at heart and I find this sort of thing pretty fascinating. I think if the common ground of worldly interests looked at the brighter side of life, then optimism would be easier to find.

On top of that, our faces use more muscles to frown than to smile, so maybe people simply enjoy the workout

It depends on your perception.

Most people are like sub atomic particles. They can be positive, negative, and neutral about anything.

But I've noticed the most pessimistic people are the "realistic" ones.

So if you wanna be happy, pretend that everything doesn't suck, and you're to go.

Or even better...work hard and try to make reality suck less for yourself and everyone else.

But...I guess in order to do that...you have to pretend things don't suck huh...hmm...

Is the glass half full? Or half empty?

Speedy says who cares. Just shut up and drink the water already.

I think people need to be realistic. Negativism is definitely bad, but sometimes optimism blinds people to the bad stuff that happens around them.2012-03-11 20:51:00

I think most people confuse pessimism with realism. A realist is not usually pessimistic, but just straight to the point about things. They look at things how they are, the straight facts. They put some thought through the situation. Pessimistic people usually see things in the worst possible way, even though it can be perceived at a more positive point of view or if it simply isn't bad YET. Yes, they may be realistic sometimes, but they can also just be making things harder on themselves. An optimist would usually see that things more likely have good outcomes. They may make the best of any situation, but can let it get in the way of reality sometimes.
I got this from ezinearticles:

This is the story about three guys, named, Optimist, Pessimist and Realist. They were all on a ship out at sea when there was a small explosion on the ship and it started to go up in flames. Each man's response to the situation was totally different, born from his particular viewpoint.

The optimist was just certain that all would work out just fine and simply went about his business.

The pessimist was certain the ship was sinking instantly beneath his feet and yelled, "Abandon ship," as he dove overboard into the icy sea.

The Realist assessed the situation, put on a life jacket and grabbed two more, one for each of his friends and hurried to the nearest lifeboat calling for his friends, Optimist and Pessimist to come jump into the lifeboat before it was lowered into the water.

Realist hopped in, just before it was lowered and scanned the ship deck where he saw Optimist surrounded by fire and frantically slapping at the flames with his jacket. When the lifeboat touched the water, Realist saw the body of his friend, Pessimist floating lifeless, dead from the impact with the icy sea.

Whether you come from the viewpoint of the pessimist or the optimist, in order to survive and prosper in the world, you need to harness the ability to learn the skills of a realist. The realist is a neutral viewpoint, neither pessimistic nor optimistic; a viewpoint that is concerned with the most effective response to any given situation as determined by the details of that situation.

So I think that a realistic person and a pessimistic person are two different things. In fact, they are. Realists, pessimists, and optimists. You can't really be realistic and pessimistic. If you are pessimistic, you doubt more than you think. Not saying that optimists and pessimists don't think, they just think in different ways.

Geez. You guys are making it sound like optimism is the plague. No wonder so many people have left this site.

Btw, I am an optimist. Go ahead, don't take me seriously as much as you want. It's okay if you don't wanna be happy with anything.

That's okay, we respect opinions here. Quite a pessimistic tone for an optimistic person. But again, that's okay. It does kind of sound like we're categorizing ourselves a bit seriously, but to me, it honestly doesn't matter what you are, we're all people. Just unique ways of thinking.
I hope that wasn't a joke though. I suck at getting jokes when they're thrown at me .

Hey, it's not like optimism equals happiness! Optimism is simply an attitude which makes people expect the best outcome for everything. Optimists think like "It's going to be alright" while pessimists think like "with my luck, this is going to get much worse for sure". But it's not like pessimists are always in a negative state of mind and optimists are always positive.

That's why I prefer realism. It's the rational option. Fearing the worst and hoping for the best, but without expecting any of those things or taking them for granted.

"Expect Oreos and you'll only suffer disappointment when all you get is lettuce.

Expect lettuce and things will seem brighter those rare days you get Oreos."
