Brand new game engine developed by Quantic Dream

Archive: 12 posts

Since their release of Heavy Rain in 2010, French studio Quantic Dream has been pretty quiet. Now at GDC 2012, they?ve revealed that they?ve been hard at work for a new PlayStation 3 exclusive title. It will definitely learn from mistakes committed in their previous effort, but creative director David Cage said that their aim was to also create new tech for their next offering.

?We never thought it would work on a PlayStation 3,? said Cage at a talk during GDC. After messing around a little more, the team discovered that ?it could? run.

In a demo reel, Cage revealed the prototype and said that it won?t be related to their upcoming title. ?We wanted to see if what we learned on Heavy Rain could be applied to a different genre,? said Cage when he described his new title.

As their new prototype, ?Kara,? was revealed, a succinct disclaimer note read simply: ?NOT OUR NEXT PROJECT.?

That was all in real-time on a PlayStation 3, and Cage said that the new engine will give mo-cap a low-cost solution. The team is aiming for something along the lines of James Cameron?s Avatar movies, or something that?s even better.

This particular demo is already one year old, running on ?version 1.? Cage says that the team is currently working on a third version. While he wouldn?t say what the next game is, Cage said that the final title upon shipping will look a hell of a lot more realistic than this demo.

?I think you?re going to get much better than that in the game,? said Cage.

Looks good, and it's a nice little demo, but that seems it could be done in Heavy Rain's engine no problem...2012-03-08 16:44:00

Agreed. I didn't see any difference from that demo and Heavy Rain. In fact they looked extremely similar.

Also 1:22.

but... it does say that that demo is a year old and that they are currently working on the third version. A year is a long time (especially considering how quickly technology advances) and for all we know the latest demo may have extreame difficulties running on the Heavy Rain engine.2012-03-08 19:02:00

I see what you're saying however the purpose of releasing that demo was to show off the new engine. I didn't see anything ground breaking. To be honest if I saw that demo I'd think it was running on the same engine.

Yep, I'd buy her for a sexual partner.

And agreed, it seems like they just rebuilt the same engine again for no reason. Saying that, I have no doubts that this will be more efficient than the last one. But graphically, only a minor upgrade.

It's not exactly a "new engine" like most of you have been saying. It's a better motion capture system that allows them to port animations into the engine much quicker and more easily; it also allows for smoother and more accurate animations.

Their solution was Kara, a motion-capture system that pipelines actors' performances directly into the game engine with little editing needed. With it, they're able to shoot footage on the motion capture stage and almost immediately see how it appears in-game.

Whereas the company had 28 cameras in the Heavy Rain capture sessions, Kara uses 65. Ninety markers are placed on the actors' face, and ninety more are placed on the body.

The tech demo is okay. But the main thing about this video was the story. What a waste 2012-03-09 04:39:00

I agree. That could've been an amazing story. I hope they realize how much people would love a game like that and decide to build it.

One thing is for sure, they could've made a very interesting game out of it. But after all, if they're able to bring so much emotion in a 7 minute tech demo, I guess they could make much better things in a whole game.2012-03-09 10:14:00

Really cool video.... sad that's the end of it, it would had made for a really nice movie. ...while nice for a cut-scene... I still am just waiting for when they can make normal gameplay look that good and smooth graphics. *mew2012-03-09 12:35:00

Wasted story, so many possibilities.

Animation smoothness just seems normal.
