Co-op or Single Player?

Archive: 5 posts

While playing a level, would you rather play with your friends whether it be online or offline, or just go solo?
Some levels are single player only but seem that they could benefit with co-op. Would it be better if a level had that optional co-op just in case you ever felt like having an adventure with a friend or two? Do you prefer a level that is not strictly single player nor strictly co-op for a full entertaining experience? I ask this not just because of a level I'm making, but also I have noticed throughout many various levels throughout LBP that could sometimes benefit if you had the choice to play along with someone else or not.

Sorry if this seems confusing. lol

FIRST!!!

I think it depends on the moment and the mood of the player. Sometimes I am more than willing to join anyone that lets me, but other times I'm happy with being alone in my pod without my actions affecting those around me, since there isn't anyone.

As for a level, it's nice for a level to grant the player the choice to go solo or go on with a band of buddies, although, each side has it's own pros and cons, of course. Levels that are focused on 1 player gameplay tend to have sections and obstacles that just can't be done with more than one player, giving it a sense of uniqueness and sometimes thrill that make a level more enjoyable to play. on the other hand, levels that are more focused on multiple players coming together to play the level always have a more open and welcoming feel, although the obstacles tend to be simpler (but that doesn't mean all multiplayer levels are that way) than those of a single player level. Then theres always that level that is amazing the first time you play it, and it's even more amazing when you invite some of your friends. It mainly depends on the build of the level, also. If you are going for a multiplayer gameplay based level, it helps to have not to complex grounding (the floor of the level) and simple, but a bit challenging, obstacles 'cause there is always going to be lag in one or another multiplayer session. But when you are making a single player gameplay based level, feel free to go all out, just make it possible to traverse.

Hope this helps, see ya 'round

Thanks for that great response!

Yeah I'm making my level not strictly co-op and not strictly single player. The environments are nice & big, the story isn't affected by the amount of players so it is the same for everyone, but the gameplay will be different for each playable character. There will also be many environments but mainly in a city, and is easily accessable to solo players or groups of people.

The only thing I worry about is groups getting disconnected because of level links, but it doesn't matter because the single player experience is just as good as the multiplayer, & people could always just re-invite their friends when in a mission.

if you're talking about playing: then single. I always find multiple people irritating (unless i'm playing purely for the giggles)

if you count creating: then co-op create. I may work faster alone, but creating with others (mic included) is much more fun. (especially when the topics get crazy during heated logic creations )

Yeah it seems the majority of people plays levels solo anyway & play in create mode with friends. Couch co-op is better with levels with level links though because you won't get disconnected from them & there is more control over what everyone is doing.
