Valve Rumored to be Making Own Console
Archive: 17 posts
Last month, Gabe Newell, the boss-man over at Valve, was quoted as saying, "if we have to sell hardware we will." (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/02/20/valve-if-we-have-to-sell-hardware-we-will.aspx) That sentiment may be closer to fruition than we all realized. TheVerge.com (http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/2/2840932/exclusive-valve-steam-box-gaming-console) has uncovered a number of difficult to verify, but believable rumors that all point to Valve entering the hardware race very soon. Apparently, Valve is working on spec hardware and software that other manufacturers would be able to license that will play PC games and support the Steam distribution system. Valve would be designing the hardware and software, but other companies would be producing it, sort of along the lines of DVD player technology. This would make Valve's hardware an open system much like what Google has been doing with Android phones. There are rumors that Alienware has already begun designing early prototypes. The system will be open to many assorted controller inputs, but Valve filed a patent last year for a customizable controller with swappable control sticks, so it's likely that something like that would be the controller that would be included with the system. The system is also rumored to incorporate biometric scanning at feedback, meaning Valve's system could be monitoring things like where the player is looking and what their pulse rate is, and incorporate that data into game design. If this is all to be believed, which seems like an exciting prospect to me, we could hear something more concrete as early as next week at GDC, or a little bit later at E3. None of these details have been confirmed by Valve, so file all of this under rumor, but it certainly makes sense. A fourth player in the console war, especially from a company like Valve who likes to open things up as much as possible to any and all interested applicants, could be a great thing. It also makes makes me wonder about Half-Life 3. When Half-Life 2 released, part of the deal of getting to play it was that you had to download Steam. Valve used Half-Life 2 as a way to get people to start using Steam. You know what a great way to get me to invest in a new home console would be? Putting Half-Life 3 on it. I was really dreaming about a console only for indie games, but this is close. | 2012-03-05 02:05:00 Author: majormel84 Posts: 398 |
I tried to think of any joke relating Steam to this console, but I still didn't come up with any. | 2012-03-05 22:27:00 Author: gdn001 Posts: 5891 |
I tried to think of any joke relating Steam to this console, but I still didn't come up with any. Well, since Valve's the one making this console, I guess you can say it'll pick up some steam in no time. http://i42.tinypic.com/2qu1wxu.jpg | 2012-03-06 00:29:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-XTjs2bCdk So its a regular console that plays pc game discs + steam dl's, or is it dl only system like Onlive? If the former, I hope this happens. So bad. Even better would be playing console games + pc games + steam dl's. They would hit the market so hard if it did all that.. | 2012-03-06 00:57:00 Author: Bremnen Posts: 1800 |
Finally, the Valveinator will rise and end this war within the PS3 and the XBOX, with it's kick-butt graphics, completely awesome controllers, and the best games of all the times. I hope they won't do anything like that. The business is not big enough for another console. And the economy is not wealthy enough for yet another console. Competition is good (well...a principle that is too capitalistic and stubborn for my likes) but too competition brings to lower quality products, as the low price chinese gadgets clearly demonstrates. With more consoles the market will be very scattered and revenues will decrease, especially on products exclusive to a certain platform. And exclusives usually are the best games. So...I hope not, as I hope Apple won't or whoever. Unless someone else steps out, but I doubt Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo will leave the biz. | 2012-03-06 06:45:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
they said the same thing about Microsoft. It was said there wasn't room for another console, the Xbox won't sell. Now look at it. But I agree with you here, although...you never know. LOL, just saw this this morning. Pic too big for here, but check it out. A companion cube PC CLICK ME (http://i.imgur.com/HATBU.jpg) | 2012-03-06 13:38:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |

Different economy and a brand that was able to force itself down the throat of consumers And with this brand, valve, the community seems to force it down their throats themselves. There is always a hype of what valve will do next. This has big potential. | 2012-03-06 15:07:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
So its a regular console that plays pc game discs + steam dl's, or is it dl only system like Onlive? I hate buying virtual data. You have to give in CC information, you depend on your connection speed, takes long periods after the purchase to actually start playing... I would keep buying physical data to the end! | 2012-03-06 16:40:00 Author: gdn001 Posts: 5891 |
I hate buying virtual data. You have to give in CC information, you depend on your connection speed, takes long periods after the purchase to actually start playing... I would keep buying physical data to the end! I love you. For me it's not about the CC info, but the need of a costant connection. I have been 3 months without connection the past years, that would have cut me out completely. And...if Valve (or someone else) bankrupts for whatever reason and the servers are plugged off? Nah I want physic media, even because more or less they cost the same amount of money as digital stuff. But in the physic media business, lots more people get money, the facilities printing the disc, sleeves, the distribution guys, the truck drivers, the store selling the games. Same money, but sustaining more people working. It's a no brainer for me. | 2012-03-07 07:07:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Update, console may not be coming anytime soon, but it will be coming. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/08/valve-console-not-coming-anytime-soon.aspx A rumor (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/03/rumor-valve-may-be-working-on-a-home-console.aspx) recently went around that Valve was working on a home console. While the company is definitely is keeping all options open, Valve says not to hold your breath for anything in the near future. Speaking to Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/5891697/shooting-down-rumors-valve-says-theyre-not-making-a-game-console-any-time-soon), Valve's marketing director Doug Lombardi said that the company is working on a number of things (including the Steam Big Picture mode, an interface for people who want to play Steam games on their TV via their PC), but that nothing's imminent. "We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we're building boxes to test that on," he told the website. "We're also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we've talked about a fair amount... All of that is stuff that we're working on, but it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware." When questioned further as to whether he thought that the company could one day do a console even if it's not on the near horizon, he replied, "I think that's accurate." And the full conversation (http://kotaku.com/5891697/shooting-down-rumors-valve-says-theyre-not-making-a-game-console-any-time-soon) is on Kotaku. | 2012-03-08 23:12:00 Author: warlord_evil Posts: 4193 |

So...I hope not, as I hope Apple won't or whoever. Unless someone else steps out, but I doubt Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo will leave the biz. I don't get it? What's wrong with another console? You say the economy isn't wealthy enough for another console yet people are constantly buying the next best thing. Apple, for example, just came out with ANOTHER iPad today. The differences between the two are very minimal yet I guarantee people will be waiting in line for it. And I also don't see how too much competition brings to lower quality products. Doesn't make sense. And you're defending exclusives? If anything, companies like Sony and Microsoft buying exclusives are the reason why the quality of games isn't as high as it should be. Example Person A wants to start a company. Person A needs money. Person A takes out a business loan. Person A creates Company A. Company A creates their first game. Lots of hype is built up, it looks good. Microsoft decides to make a deal with the company. Company A needs a budget for the game, so they accept. The game is now an exclusive. Game is released. It does well. Company makes a good deal of money. Company A pays off loans. Company A made a small profit. Company A creates their second game. It's "alright". It looks the same as their first game. It doesn't do nearly as well as their first game. Second Example Person B wants to start a company. Person B needs money. Person B takes out a business loan. Person B creates Company B. Company B creates their first game. Lots of hype is built up, it looks good. Company B releases the game as a non-exclusive. It does AMAZING. Company B makes a lot more money. Company B pays off loans. Company B made a huge profit. Company B decides to upgrade their engine. Company B creates their second game. It looks better, sounds better, it's better overall. Company B makes more money. Rinse and repeat. Besides, have you seen the Steam Sales? Valve could seriously destroy the competition with this thing. If done right of course. | 2012-03-08 23:48:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
