Costumes on Sackbots Question.

Archive: 7 posts

Ok I have some questions about how much thermo do sackbots take up when using them in a level. I been confused if I should make my level single player or not because I don’t know how much thermo it may take up if up to 4 seckbots copy up to 4 players costumes. And do players when they enter a level take up thermo themselves too not even counting the bots that‘ll later copy the players? I’ve heard players costumes can take up room on the thermo in levels that don’t even have sackbots in them.
(Hard for me to test sense my internet is to weak to join my friends to test things like that out)
And going back on the subject on sackbots set to copy player costume, sense they’ll have the same costume on as the hidden player in the level, does that double how much thermo is used for that costume or does it not use up much more thermo sense the costume is already loaded on the player? When testing it seems like the first is true in that it takes up more thermo to have the bot copy the play’s costume even though the costume is already loaded in the game on the player. If that is 100% true that both the player and bot take up thermo and are not counted as one. That be a lot of thermo taken up. But no matter how I see it or whatever ends up being true, The best option seems to be to make the level single player only if i use bots. Sense you never know what super detailed costumes the players may or may not have on. *mew

Hey Fume.

Having two Sackbots wearing identical costumes takes a lot less thermo than two Sackbots wearing different costumes. This should also apply if its a player and a Sackbot (as long as the Sackbot it set to copy owner). Memory is used to load in assets, but multiplying the number of a given asset is much less taxing than the texture and mesh data of the asset itself.

Also I'm not 100% sure on how memory is managed in Multi Player, but I think the game has a built-in buffer to account for 4 players wearing completely different costumes which therefore shouldn't affect the thermo of the level itself in any major way if this is the case.

But as you said yourself, you will always get better performance if you make your level Single Player Only, with the difference being minimal under ideal conditions

^Well i would had thought it would not use much thermo to have a bot to copy owner costume... but it does, at least it seemed like it did to me... when testing after the bot copied my basic costume i wear the thermo jumped over 2 bars up... :'I *mew2012-03-03 23:20:00

Is that actually the case though? Because I have made levels with the thermo just over 3/4 full and when I invite a friend to come join me I get a message saying that other players cannot join as the level is "overheating". Clearly the level isn't overheating since I made it myelf and I know there's almost 1/4 of the max left. This would suggest that having another player join would cause the level to exceed the max thermo allowance and speculation around the forums has always been that thermo allowance in LBP2 has to account for player costumes, which are apparently big thermo eaters.

^ yeah that's why i'm confused and been worried how i should handle my levels sense i hear different things over time. i want to know how exactly how this stuff works. *mew2012-03-03 23:46:00

Daym... So it's 2 bars higher if the Bot is copying your costume (player 1) compared to if just uses the default wooden Sackbot costume? If so, that sounds like a case of very bad memory management

I'm not sure why this warning is in place, but I think it was put there to cover up the fact that the chance of divergence it getting extremely high when inside a level of 3/4th+ thermo. The host will get the "overheating" message to discourage inviiting players into their level...
I might be wrong, but I don't think the thermo visibly goes up when you invite players to your levels in general?

yes, unless my game is lieing to me, that is indeed the case. it costs me far less thermo to keep the bot wooden. so you can take a guess what happens when 4 players with detailed costumes join a game where 4 sackbots set to copy player. but like i said, i really want somebody to test this for me sense i can't really. :S *mew

yes the bar don't show that it goes up once people join... but some problems can sometimes come from people joining if i remember right.
