Need help! Something weird...
Archive: 13 posts
Hey guys, I'll get straight to the problem and it's a weird one. Basically, all the pistons in my current level have started firing off on their own and staying ON! It has nothing to do with switches, timers, tags or anything I am triggering. I can be just sat looking at the screen for inspiration then PING! they go off and I have to rewind my level to reset them. It's very random as well and It's definately like a glitch because when I check the switches they are all OFF. It's only recently started and I have no clue as to why it has started... Has this ever happened to anyone else? | 2012-02-27 23:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
Unless they are set to "input type: direction", this has no sense. Note that there was a glitch I saw one, which happens when you left the game running for too long in a level while unpaused. You have nothing else to do but restarting in another level, but building in pause mode. Not sure if it got fixed in LBP2, just saw it in LBP1. | 2012-02-28 00:29:00 Author: Unknown User |
I know it makes no sense at all. My level is a pinball table with multiple pistons that are attached to tag sensors so when the sensor goes near them they flick out, and what's happening is they flick out and stay out. The first time it happened I was creating a switch that had no connection to any pistons then suddenly I heard the sounds go off that are attached to the pistons then when I looked up at my table all the pistons where out and the only way I could reset them was by rewinding. I'm going to replace them later to see if that fixes it.... REALLY WEIRD!!! | 2012-02-28 08:23:00 Author: Unknown User |
It would be best to replace them. I do it with a lot of things because you can screw a lot of other things up if you start fiddling with the way things work when they are stuck in the middle of your level (sometimes unavoidable though ). Have you tried going into Play mode to see if the pistons are doing the same there as It may well be the glitch that caused all pistons and things to break or go funny. Can't really remember what it effected but I am sure it was only a LittleBigPlanet 1 glitch. I think your best option is too replace them and if it does it again then check to see that the switch or tag isn't breaking or is glitched in some way. I had it where I played in pause mode for a whilst corner editing the back wall and when I pressed play the back wall was no longer an object but a piece of material that you could walk right through as If it wasn't there. Very strange and very annoying. | 2012-02-28 09:10:00 Author: LittleBigSnooth Posts: 454 |

Yeah I tried that and it seemed fine... I've been working on the level for over two week now and this is the first time I've had any real issues, so it did put a bit of a downer on it... hopefully it won't affect it when it's published. I'll see how it goes later when I go back to it and replace the pistons if necessary! Thanks! | 2012-02-28 12:05:00 Author: Unknown User |
I think what pivottt and LittleBigSnooth are referring to is the "160 hour glitch (http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/160_hour_glitch)". Have you left your level running, unpaused, for a lot of hours in create mode? If so, it could indeed be that (assuming it hasn't been fixed, I don't know one way or the other). | 2012-02-28 16:22:00 Author: Dr C Posts: 122 |
Pistons can be really delicate. Maybe they're sensing the tag too early? What activates the tag? It could be that the tag is somehow making its way towards the pistons. That, or like the others stated, the 160 hour glitch (which I've never experienced at all or heard of until now). | 2012-02-28 20:06:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
Or... is the object just too heavy and unbalanced? Piston lag when subject to heavy strenght - and end up breaking. Else you could use movers, I just hate pistons. | 2012-02-28 23:31:00 Author: Unknown User |
So, these pistions firing off suddenly...is the tag sensor that triggers them set with a large radius to detect an unlabelled tag and are you creating with the game unpaused? Because if you started working on another part of the level that includes a tag of the same colour AND that tag is within range of the tag sensor linked to the pistons AND your game is unpaused, then it would definitely set off the pistons. | 2012-02-29 02:02:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

Actually I do tend to leave it in create mode, unpaused for a while when I go off for certain duties!! I never figured out why it started to do this. It wasn't any TAG sensors or switches as most of them are only active when the object carrying the TAGS go near them, and the object was no where near enough to set them off. One of my PISTONS was actually connected to the Controlinator and only activated when the X is pressed, and even that was firing off??? Well last night I resorted to replacing all my pistons and it is behaving itself again.. THANKGOD!!! | 2012-02-29 12:09:00 Author: Unknown User |
Actually I do tend to leave it in create mode, unpaused for a while when I go off for certain duties!! If you want the advice of a veteran, you should always work in pause mode, only ever unpausing briefly for testing purposes and then rewinding to your last paused state before continuing to build. That way you'll avoid a lot of issues, such as inadvertently triggering logic that ought to be in a neutral state when a player enters the level. | 2012-02-29 23:17:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
... Though sometimes you can't rewind else it freezes cause the level is too big ^^ | 2012-02-29 23:24:00 Author: Unknown User |
... Though sometimes you can't rewind else it freezes cause the level is too big ^^ Then don't rewind... >.> Just learn how to reset everything. | 2012-03-01 01:15:00 Author: Speedynutty68 Posts: 1614 |
