Help! My Level is Disappearing!

Archive: 7 posts

EDIT: Okay, I think it's okay now. I just let it be for a while, and when I went back to work, everything worked! However, I am keeping this up just in case this happens again.

My level I've been working oh-so hard on is suffering the consequences of having too much in one place. The prettiest (or most complex) parts are missing from my level. I mean, they're THERE, but you can't see them. I tried everything; Using less complicated shapes, eliminating the hand-made checker background, adding whole structures instead of individual ones--everything. I think my only option left is to try and unpaste every item in the level, but that'll take forever. Here are some pics to help:

(Above)The top of the pillar is missing, as well as the bottom half of part of the platform to my right (you can see the cardboard supports just floating under it!)

(Above)The tops of the pillars are missing, and some of the segments of them too. I deleted the wall where you see the big gaping blue hole, though. The items behave like pop-in textures.

(Above)This one's ridiculous. I'm standing on the edge of the pillar, but it's not there. I'm sad.
Please help me . I've been working hard on this, and I have considered the problem, but never noticed it until it got really bad. I think I'd asplode if I lost this work, what with not being able to conjure up a good level idea for weeks now. Any suggestions? Or has it lost all hope? I want to keep it looking nice, too.

This happened to me on my recent project 'Slayer'... only thing I could do was revert back to a locked backup I published on my planet... from there I just made sure not to add to much again.

Sorry this isn't an ideal answer.

If you modify a circle shape, it takes a load of memory. I can see multiple half-circles and squares with rounded edges. Those shapes take a lot of memory because the position of each edge is stored - except in perfect circles. That may cause lag. That plus having homemade textures out of multiple materials.2012-02-26 15:59:00

I didn't know about the half-circle thing. I'll try it out.

try putting chunks of your level inside emitters and emitting them when the players get close. that's a common thermo saver solution

check your star menu in your popit and count the number of different materials you're using. the game accounts for all the textures it has to load and puts it on your thermo. your checker background/floor can be imitated by taking a picture of it and sticking it on one material.

make sure you're not using a horrendous amount of lights or have too many free moving objects anywhere in your level. anything that doesn't need to move needs to be glued to dark matter, the ground, or given 100% dampening.

if your level is pretty long, you might want to cut in half with a level link

It's starting to look better. I just let it rest for a bit and everything went back to normal. But just in case this happens again, and I wouldn't be surprised, I'll keep this up.2012-02-26 17:17:00
