Whoah, Attract-O-Stuff Slowed my Level RIGHT Down
Archive: 13 posts
Okay, maybe like 3 of y'all saw my tweet a few days ago about my level "lagging intensely," so yeah... Basically, my problem was that my level started bringing down the FPS seemingly randomly. By "bringing down the FPS," I mean that the picture got extremely choppy, and my camera transitions started jittering... Here's a photo of everything in the level at the time as soon as it started lagging. http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/1a46b12a186ea1cdd344c702641f5f72e1f3f2f3.jpg Now obviously the first thought that came to my head was that I made it too complicated, with so many little blocks, and that that is what was slowing it down, but today I decided to hop in to the level and fool around with it a little bit. Turns out that the long black strip of wood (with the bubbles going up and around it) with an Attract-O-Tweaker on it was to blame. I think I should point out that I already had built mostly everything there, and then I added the Attract-O-Tweaker, which is how it took me by surprise. As soon as I deleted it, the level started running at about the same speed as any other level, and I'm now able to keep working on this provided I don't use Attract-O-Gel. I've even added like, 2 more checkerboard walls and 7 more pillars since then and it works fine. I dunno, just figured it was worth posting, in case nobody else figured this out yet. Not sure how bad a level already has to be before it'll be affected, but considering how much junk I threw on to every platform there, most creators should be safe. Unless it happens much sooner than this, and I just got the "extreme" version... I did a Google search of this ("Site:LBPCentral.com __________________") and found nothing , so if there's already something about this somewhere I apologize. | 2012-02-25 02:47:00 Author: KlawwTheClown Posts: 1106 |
Maybe disable VFX :> | 2012-02-25 03:01:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
Maybe disable VFX :> I actually didn't have VFX turned on at all, I forgot to mention. I had the SFX turned off too, but that wouldn't make a difference I don't think. | 2012-02-25 03:06:00 Author: KlawwTheClown Posts: 1106 |
Did you have the effect all attached pieces enabled? Not sure exactly what it says but there's a tweak to effect attached things too. Although I doubt you never saw that. | 2012-02-25 05:59:00 Author: OneEyedBanshee Posts: 1370 |
Cool pic. I found the attract o tweaker has a high thermo usage when i added it to one of my level as a visual effect more than anything else but i can't say that it made the level lag or anything and i am using a lot of stickers also which can produce lag. My only suggestion may be that there is too much complexity in the level and even though you think the attrack o gel is the cause it could just be one of them. I would try to remove a lot of the complexity and then test with the attract o tweaker to see what happens. Also if you have the sticker panel material you could take snap shots of the complex parts like the checkered look and just place a stickered version of it instead. This will help lower lag a lot of the time. | 2012-02-25 06:10:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |

Well it all depends on how you take the photo due to lighting and then getting the right light effects with the sticker panel. Done well it doesn't look too bad and done very well it will look right. | 2012-02-25 06:43:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |

Nah, I didn't know what it did at the time, so I left it turned off. I know now, though. Cool pic. ...Thanks. I would try to remove a lot of the complexity and then test with the attract o tweaker to see what happens. Well, I am pretty sure it was the Attract-O-Gel because the lag completely disappeared when I deleted it. I even added tons more little squares and stuff afterwards and it works great still. I also have only used like, 5 stickers maximum. So far. Also if you have the sticker panel material you could take snap shots of the complex parts like the checkered look and just place a stickered version of it instead. This will help lower lag a lot of the time. Yeah, but when I create, I tend to get lazy and if I end up having to go in and redo stuff, I usually tend to just start a new level. I know it's a bad habit and all, but I can't help it. | 2012-02-25 17:06:00 Author: KlawwTheClown Posts: 1106 |
Are you sure it's not the score bubbles causing the lag? Try deleting just the bubbles and see whether it makes a difference. | 2012-02-25 20:18:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Okay, so I kinda started adding stuff after getting rid of the Attract-O-Gel and it's good now. (Well if I zoom out too far everything turns in to yellow "!" marks but I expected that) I do have bubbles in the level still, and the level's not lagging so... Yeah. Still think it was the Gel's fault. http://ia.lbp.me/img/ft/6ca2ae9ff69b67ca3d5cf2e723a8be94dd5a7e2e.jpg | 2012-02-26 04:41:00 Author: KlawwTheClown Posts: 1106 |
Haha, wow. Looks like you've got a LOT more done than when we were puzzled by this before. I've been told the attract-o-gel/tweak gives the level quite a bit of lag due to the altered physics in the specific object. It doesn't help that the smexy azz visuals clog up the frame rate even more! On a second note, You remember the terrifying encounter I had with the "Yellow ! Symbol" In Vinewood Swamp, right? Well it's quite unpredictable. At some points it doesn't show up at all, and sometimes big parts of the level don't even appear! So unless someone has a fix for this, I'm not sure about what to do about that... | 2012-02-26 05:13:00 Author: grayspence Posts: 1990 |
Not that it's a problem now, but perhaps you should add a strip of A-O-G outside the level that's similar to the size of the one you deleted and see if it lags again. Then delete it. If it lags when just sat outside the level not doing much then you know for sure it's the A-O-G but if not then it may well have been the complexity that the A-O-G added to that part of the level. I don't know just a thought as it would be nice to get a conformation on this for future references | 2012-02-27 09:57:00 Author: LittleBigSnooth Posts: 454 |
I was doing some messing around with sackbots and the attracto gel/tweaker a while back. I found that there seemed to be a problem with the holo that followed it (to control sackbot), in that it lagged behind occasionally. Is this a common problem? Has it been fixed? | 2012-02-27 11:02:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
