What do you think should be in a good bomb survival?

What do you think that a good bomb-survival should contain? Half of LBP levels are friggin bomb-survivals, but very very few are good ones. Soo, what do you think it should contain? :star:2012-02-21 19:51:00

Is there really anything you can do in terms of originality with a bomb survival?

Maybe you could have some thing chasing you, tossing bombs on you, but that feels like it would get stale faster than the typical bomb survival.

well.... have a massive environment... and then... then... theres a bomb somewhere... and no hope of escape... y'all still following?... yeah?... good. Anyway, you find the bomb and with 10 seconds to go you need to cut the right wires... and you could have somebody talkin in your ear giving you clues to the right one. A heartbeat would be present for audio and tears would flow down the screen. Bombs, environment and wires would be randomized to a certain extent.


That's pretty unique right?

Haha, this made my day! An original bomb survival! Seriously, you want to make sure players play it, don't make a bomb, shark or zombie survival. They are too random. A good game is a game where the user is responsible for its failure. This is why so many people hate Tetris. They say "ugh, I pressed the wrong button so I dided, this game is unfair." How about, if you MUST plague us with another ruddy bomb survival, you create one that is really silly. For example, invert the camera and so it looks like the bombs are coming up or better yet, YOU'RE the bomb. Make it so that you are the bomb trying to destroy an endless wave of sack things. You could use the 3d camera pointing down so it looks like you're facing down and whack a controllinator on it or something. I don't like these survivals though. It has got to a point were I load up the cool pages, filter out LBP 1 levels, and then avoid anything with the title (or near as) Bomb survival, zombie survival, total wipe out survival, shark survival or FREE TROPHY 4 U, LOTS TROPHIE HERT ME N LEVALS.....2012-02-22 10:25:00

Yes sorry, forgot about the horror of seeing a Justin Bieber level on the cool pages. Also, I forgot about EVERY WAY TO DIE levels. One is on the cool pages at the moment with 14'000 plays and was made BADLY on lbp1 and then republished under a lbp2 level. Makes me AnGrY ahhhh.2012-02-22 13:03:00

i don't know if that's exactly original, since it has been used in old bomberman games. but why not having the ghost thing on your level? once a player dies, he can keep bothering the others, but he can't score anymore.

also, maybe it would be intersting to make it this way: instead of killing the other players, you would have to kill sackbots that would follow each player. you can do something to protect your followers.

by the way, what are the best bomb survivals out there? haven't found any so far.

If you want to do anything original with ANY spam survival you really have to go WAY beyond the basic concept for originality and fun-factor. You are basically forced to use Sackbots (because of the logic they can hold opening many possiblilities when used right, and for bomb survivals you can keep them on one layer to create custom bombs that emit an instant exploding bomb in the background to make it kill)

Examples.


Status Effecting bombs - bombs that don't kill but can really be a thorn in the players side, examples are blinding the player's view, reducing the players movment (speed, jump etc. this is one of the biggest reasons for sackbots)
Unique attacking/moving bombs - Bombs that attack or move in a unique way, examples i made are shock bombs that release a eletric pulse that pierces through walls, Black Hole bombs that suck everything in.
"Anti-air" bombs or attacks - because people can just camp at a high spot till its safe.
True Randomizer - to greatly reduce the odds of "pillars" like above, basically pistons are forbidden

Versus mode + Life counter + End game logic when only 1 player remains - makes a better goal, instead of trying to get to the bottom, you are fighting to survive the longest against other players. The life counter is a MUST now because it gets any veteran player's nerves having to replay a level so soon

I've been itching to upload a video to show that it is possible to make a good enjoyable level that is spammed alot, but because of the dynamic emitter bug, fixing the problems mine currently have will ruin it (I did keep the emitting objects on a storage level, but recapturing all the emitters is going to take some time).

Make your Bomb Survival be something like Swiming Underwater and having bombs drop from above and you gotta swim in between the land below and the bombs above. Bombs Sink to the bottom and blow up the ground. Any pieces that are broken off rise to the top of the water and turn to a Dangeress Element like Gas or thunder.
This keeps players in between those

Basically, taking major advice from the people here is your only option. If you're desperate to make a survival level then it HAS to be something that is just as impressive as a beautiful platformer or an advance side scrolling shooter. Hopefully, if you could pull off making a new kind of bomb survival then you might be able to save us from the old kind of bomb survivals and we would never see them again. Of course eventually the new bomb survivals would be copied and then hated so really it is a vicious circle until people sit down and go "No, I don't wana do these silly survivals anymore" lol2012-02-24 09:25:00

True, true. But i think the idea of "pain-in-the-***-bombs-" really could re-invent bomb survivals.

That exacly why bomb survival is fun... it's random oh and zombie survival is not random

How to make bomb survival good? Make it better, bring it to LBP2 logic, no body even tried that, all of them still sittingi n LBP1 stone age. Also don't name level "Bomb Survival" because that name is cursed and people will dislike it just for it

LittleBigSnooth and Shadowriver are definite people to listen to. Make it original, make it modern, make it a new idea that's merely inspired by bomb survivals.

Let's toss around some ideas, shall we?

One things is different types of bombs. Like, have your basic timer one, a player seeker (set so can still be dodged), cluster bomb, etc. Make some real terrain, maybe even making it progressively progress to the right, complete with obstacles to doge. Maybe add in Sackbot enemies that throw explosives your way. As far as points, maybe instead of just time based, make it based on what you dodge. The harder it is to dodge, the more points it should be worth. Could even give the player some special abilities. There's tons of options, so use them.

dam you bomb-survival curse! Im afriad people will leave and dislike the lvl when they see just a little bit bomb survival-ish. But maybe if you give the right Introduction, they won't flee like legendary pokemons? ()2012-02-25 09:53:00

I am not sure Pixel. I kind of think unless it is really adventurous and different then you are still going to run into people that will simple dislike because of the type of level. Calling it something other than Bomb survivals will get you more plays but when they realize that it is a bomb survival they will not be happy and might feel a little used. But taking Shadowrivers advice and bringing it into the LittleBigPlanet 2 golden age.2012-02-25 17:48:00
