A better Flame/Torch effect.

Archive: 13 posts

Hi Eveybody,

I have always been a fan of history when it came to school and college etc. so when I realized that the materials were available in LittleBigPlanet to make one awesome looking castle or something I jumped at the chance of trying it out. However, through much procrastination and a lack of enthusiasm, I ended up just toying around with stuff in create mode. This was when I found out that I really hate the Torch decoration. It is bad looking and is not very bright, but for a ship or something old like a castle there is no substitute. So I got to work.

Get out the Torch deco (POTC pack),
Place it on a wall,
Add an LED lights on top of it,
tweak this light so that they are slightly different colours when on and off,
Get a timer and tweak to 0.4 secs (up to you i like 0.3 or 0.4),
then attach the timer output to the LED light and the timers own reset.

When entered in to Play or Preview mode, the LED light disappears and the torch looks as though it has a lovely glow to it. Also, with the timer turning it on and off then the glow looks like it is flickering .

Not perfect but a nice way to make the torch look better if you can not find a replacement and you need it for effect.

Sorry if this has already been found, I am slightly slow lol.

Thanks,

Liam :star:

I thought decorations didn't cast light anyway (including all light based decorations).2012-02-20 21:56:00

They don'y. That's why you add the LED light behind it because when in Play mode the LED light disappears but it's glow does not, making it look like the decoration/Torch is glowing

Instead of just a timer, I'd start a new chip, add a randomizer (short on and off times), wire it to a very short timer (< 0.5s) set to directional (<->) and wire that timer to the LED which is set to Dimmer. If you want to get a moving flame from somewhere, get out the candle object (from LBP1), select its flame and copy it (L3). Dunno how it aligns with the torch deco, but sticking the flame to a bit of 0% brightness deco might help.2012-02-21 10:54:00

Lol, Strangely enough this is the new version that I am using. I posted the old one as a simple way of making the torch deco look good without having to go too logical as this can put inexperienced players off creating . Nice find though, really is strange how only a few hours ago I did exactly the same method lol. In regards to the candle flame, it makes the torch look really plastic so if you were going to use it I would make an object around it instead of using the torch.

I just put a piece of invisible holo or sticker panel and light it on fire to give the torch a flame effect.

i haven't tried it yet (stuck on kingdom of Amalur at the moment) but has anyone tried the new water material, shaped it like a flame, adjusted the animation vertically and stickered it red before then adding some extra light?2012-02-22 07:36:00

it would be nice to be able to adjust the flame height.2012-02-23 01:52:00

A different versatile way is to take a candle object from the Lights section and click L3 on the base of the flame. This old trick detatches a copy of a single flame, you can adjust height and colourof this flame and the glow without the need for an additioanl LED.2012-03-04 17:37:00

Haha I just made a candle like this using the same method for the flicker effect, and now I read it here! Funny how people can get the same ideas 2012-03-05 16:57:00

I have been doing this with the muppets light deco and it is so much more vibrant looking. No flame though just a way to turn deco into a light object. Always good to think outside the box to extend all possible resources.2012-03-13 08:09:00
