Return of the 3D Platformer!

Archive: 18 posts

I'm getting sick and tired of game sites saying they want the next 2d platformer. IGN recently said they wanted another top-down, 2d zelda! Ok, here's my problem(s) with this. For one, there have been MANY great 2d platformers released recently (Braid, LIMBO, the Trine series, Rayman Origins, etc.), and there isn't really any reason to want a "revolution" in them or anything. I personally want a "revolution"' of 3D platformers! Tell me, when was the last time you heard a game ompany release one of THOSE?

I'm talking games like the Jak and Daxter series, the Crash Bandicoot series, the Banjo Kazooie games, the Rathet and Clank series, Super Mario 64... the list goes on.

Back in the day, game companies didn't say, "I know! Lets make a Super Nintendo game with Atari graphics!" No, they aimed at making games fun (and making a profit, but there you go). Im a little tired of all these great game companies making FPS's, survival games, action-strategy games like Uncharted (granted it is a good game), and making silly rereleases of their games! STOP IT!

So IGN, if you're reading this (doubtful), if you're looking for a 2D gaming revolution, look no further than LBP2, possibly the most unrecognized game ever in my opinion.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

Well, they arent exactly new, but in a sense they are. Playstation released the 3 sly games on the PS3 in HD, and recently released the Jak and daxter series in HD as well. Although, it would be fun to see a new Jak and daxter game

I know you arent a fan of the re-release, but its probably the closest your going to get untill someone decides to make a decent, new game (Or until sly 4 is released )

Not at all! I enjoy the rerelease of the Jak games (bought them). NaughtyDog usually makes one franchise per system. However, I'm disapointed with them. Their new game is "the Last of Us", and it looks like it will be pretty similar to uncharted. Oh boy. Another survival-action game. whoopie. I just want asomeone to make a WHOLE NEW character franchise.2012-02-20 15:33:00

Lol what? How is Uncharted similar to the The Last of Us in any way other than the realistic graphics (ie same engine)?! Uncharted isn't a survival game lol.

Sorry, I meant strategy game. However, they do look like they will play the same way. 3rd person perspective, shooting stuff in an overgrown environment, you have a companion...2012-02-20 16:08:00

Donkey Kong 64... Banjo Kazooie... <3

SLY COOPER!

3D platformers are my favourite kinds of games, especially because they tend to be really long, and each level is full of secrets, so you can play them for a long time.

I really wish they'd keep making them. The only ones that I, personally have seen so far are Mario games, and I don't really like Mario games anymore. I find them too easy now, and it seems like they have to point out every little thing you have to do.

I miss challenging 3D Platformers!

Crash Bandicoot

There needs to be a new Crash game. There was one in development a couple of years ago but Activision fired the team -.-
*insert general Naughty Dog fanboyism*

I'd too love to see the return of 3D platformers. They felt beyond limitations, and when you were playing a truly exceptional one you knew that at any moment something crazy could happen - a new game mechanic perhaps, a new visual aesthetic, an original form of level design?

Although many modern games are good it seems like true imagination and creativity isn't found nearly so frequently in the industry any more.

My favourite game of all time is Rayman 2, and I don't think I've ever seen a game like it since.

I agree that the first 3 games were the best, but I also love Twinsanity, even with all its glitches and the massive amounts of deleted and unfinished content
Oh and getting to 100% on a Crash game doesn't mean you've completed it Crash Bash goes up to like 175% and beyond Pretty sure in Warped at least you can get 105%.

Rayman 2 will always hold a special place in my heart <3 But I love Crash slightly more

Crash 3 Warped is also one of my favourite games, but it's no Rayman 2

Oh, and I'm pretty sure it went up to 110%

To be fair they're quite different games I played through Rayman 2 last year on 3DS but I haven't played Crash 3 properly for a while. Or any Crash games actually, though I did play CTR like last week

There's 2 or 3 artists and one of the current co-presidents left over from the PS1 Crash days. Its nice to have this little dream that a new Crash game from ND would be a progression from what they did before with the series but I think we would end up in a situation where the game that the current staff would want to make wouldn't meet our expectations for a Crash game.

Games like Sly, Jak, Crash, Bajo Kazooie and Ratchet aren't really platforming games, They're adventure games. They do have platforming, but it's nothing more than a dumbed down shadow of its 2D self. And none of those games would be any good if their only gameplay side was the simple 3D platforming, so the developers mixed it up with combat and puzzles, thus making them adventure games.

For a game whose focus is solely and purely plaftorming, 2D is the way to go. Play Rayman Origins and tell me if it hasn't better platforming than Sly, Ratchet and Jak combined. 2D is more precise, more flowing, more intuitive and faster and the camera doesn't get in the way. The Super Mario 64/Galaxy games are the only 3D platformers that stand a chance against 2D ones.

^ I Agree with what you said. exactly what i was thinking.
2D or sideways left to right platforming games is the best way to go when making a pure platforming game. when it's 3D it's normally a lot better for it to be a adventure game that has platforming in it at that point. *mew

And by the way, people should look further than LBP2 if they want a 2D platformer. LBP2 gets much less recognition than it deserves, but it's the community and innovation of user-generated content that should get recognized, not the platforming. LBP's vanilla platforming isn't anything special, too sluggish and floaty unless you enhance it through a custom controllable sackbot.2012-02-20 22:29:00

I have to disagree, and yet agree with you to some degree. I agree that pure platforming is better suited for 2d. But the pure platforming itself isnt all to exciting by itself. I personally love ALOT of 2d games.

But i think it's silly to call 3d platforming dumbed down from 2d platforming. Here's a PERFECT example that no one has mentioned yet: Metroid Prime! Metroid was a GREAT platformer, and super metroid is one of my all time favorite games. Metroid Prime is practically the perfect example of a 3d platformer, albeit it is in first person point of view.

Rayman origins is a good game too. I have nothing against it, nor with other modern 2d platformers. I just think it's high time we have a new 3d platformer/Adventure (if you want to be picky about it ) game.

The Super Mario 64/Galaxy games are the only 3D platformers that stand a chance against 2D ones.

Also, maybe this could be inspiration to make a better, "revolutionized" 3d platformer. Ive had my fill of what can be done with 2d for the next fiew years...

I don't see how I'm being picky. All these 3D games we're talking about (Metroid Prime included) are simply adventure games. Platforming is a pillar of gameplay, but the gameplay itself isn't limited only to platforming. These games have combat, stealth and puzzles too, and those aspects are just as important (or even more so) than just the platforming.

I do love adventure games just as much as platformers though, so I agree about wanting more of those. Some of my favorite games are adventure franchises from the PS1/PS2 era like the Ratchet/Sly/Jak trio. Nowadays the videogame market is too bloated with grey-brown shooters.
