Background lights
Archive: 17 posts
Hey I was just looking around a bit, trying to find a tutorial, but I didnt look hard. I figured Id just ask here. I was wondering if there was any way to make light in the background? I tried putting light objects into the background with no luck, and hollogram doesnt cast any light. Also, light objects in the back layer just stop castling light at the last layer. So, its just a sudden wall of dark beyond in the background. Anyone know a way? | 2012-02-19 19:59:00 Author: ATMLVE Posts: 1177 |
Worked in LBP1 but not in 2 as far as i know... | 2012-02-19 20:58:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |
Have you tried taking the bee antenna object, turning it invisible, and placing it in the back thin layer? | 2012-02-19 21:45:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
Have you tried taking the bee antenna object, turning it invisible, and placing it in the back thin layer? I havent, but wouldnt it just bend into the normal layers? And if it didnt, I would guess that like everything else, the light would just stop at the end of the normal layers. Worked in LBP1 but not in 2 as far as i know... Yes, as you can see by my post, I was aware of this. | 2012-02-19 22:02:00 Author: ATMLVE Posts: 1177 |

If I can remember correctly, I think it stops at the first thick layer. I think if you make it brighter or the radius larger, all the layers or more would be visible. Sackboy's face is shadowed, though. He's facing opposite the light. | 2012-02-19 22:04:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
Have you tried taking the bee antenna object, turning it invisible, and placing it in the back thin layer? you can turn the bee antenna invisible?! is it actually a setting then? | 2012-02-19 22:31:00 Author: GribbleGrunger Posts: 3910 |
you can turn the bee antenna invisible?! is it actually a setting then? Yar it's a setting. a lot of lights have that setting... well all the ones you can stick on other objects somewhat like deco. *mew | 2012-02-19 22:35:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |

I'll be darned, I didnt know this either ! | 2012-02-20 01:38:00 Author: Butaneflame Posts: 64 |
only workaround i can think of is twisting a spotlight so that it faces the back. iirc one of the mm pick levels twisted a laser to face the front and made it rotate in their hub level, so i'm guessing it'll work for the back as well. if you don't know the glitch i'm referring to:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zelZjBdb2So | 2012-02-20 01:55:00 Author: Unknown User |

I think in most cases people are probably using the lightbox objects, which have a visibility setting on their tweak menu. You'll find them under "Lights" in the objects section of your poppit. As for background lights, yeah they worked in LBP1 but not in LBP2. Screwed up some of the visuals in my LBP1 levels, like my sunset effect which used a series of graded spotlights in the back layer. Most irksome! | 2012-02-20 07:53:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
You cant really have object lights in the bg. Only the global lighting works now. You could make your own lighting system with sticker panel in the background and use it like a filter but would take alot of tweaking to get right probably. | 2012-02-20 11:34:00 Author: L1GhTmArE Posts: 519 |
Yeah there doesnt seem to be a way, how disappointing... Now that I think about it, I dont think theres a glitch, because it seems to be in the games mechanics to not allow lighting in the 3D layers. And obviously, theres no way past that, youd have to re-code the game, or something. However, it seems that some people have learned from this thread, so its not a complete loss. | 2012-02-22 02:01:00 Author: ATMLVE Posts: 1177 |

I used a lot of invisible bee antennas for lighting in The Explorers level. The great thing about the antennas lighting vs the LEDs is that you can twist then depending where on the material or object you place it on. In many cases, the visible bee antennas was set to zero radius, and the invisible lights where bent around the surfaces to cast unique lighting and shading. I liked being able to cast the light the way I wanted instead of simply turning the radius way up. As for lights in the background, they show up when visible, but cast no lighting. It's very sad. I really enjoyed lighting the background and foregrounds in LBP1. Many of my LBP1 levels were destroyed with the new lighting. | 2012-02-22 02:22:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
hi there, Cymbol! did you manage to free sackboy from the evil clutches of the big black box? | 2012-02-22 07:32:00 Author: GribbleGrunger Posts: 3910 |
