Piston Question

Archive: 3 posts

I've just noticed whilst making a level - does it matter which way round you make pistons as i'm trying to do a door that opens for the jade gate (see story mode for info on what that is) with 2 blocks that move by pistons but don't know if I have to position the pistons so the fatter end is on the 'holding blocks' or the moving blocks / or whether it doesn't matter.

Help would be nice

Edit: One more thing i'm stuck on - I can't seem to get the jade snake to go through it properly since it keeps re-opening then crushing the snake entirely

The way you put the psiton doesn't matter unless you want the piston to be invisible.

As for the other problem, you need a permanent switch. There are several ways to do this, but here's how I do it: Put a block of dark matter anywhere, and a block of dissolve on top of that. Put a key switch on the dark matter and a key on the dissolve. Now, let's pretend you want to open the door with a proximity switch. Attach the proximity switch to the dissolve. Make sure the key switch is set to directional. Attach the key switch to the pistons that open the door. If this doesn't open the door permanently, simply invert the key switch and it should open the door.

Now, what happens there? You may be asking. Well, when the player enters the proximity switches range, the proximity switch dissolves the dissolve material. This triggers the key switch(because the key is no longer in range) to open the door forever.

Wow, thanks a lot for the detailed answer - I actually meant a door that opens and closes for the jade snake repeatedly but somehow did that myself. Still helped a lot though! Have been stuck on the mystery of doors for ages lol. 2008-12-31 01:44:00
