The Hunger Games Part One: District 12

Archive: 4 posts

Hello LBPCentral! Today, I would like to show off one of my levels. This particular one is called The Hunger Games Part One: District 12. It's the first in a series of four levels based off the Hunger Games. Trust me, they get better as they go. Not to toot my own horn, but compared to some of the other hunger games levels I've seen, I dare say that mine are among the few good HG levels out there. I don't have any pics, but I hardly think that'll matter much. Feel free to give me feedback.

Like biorogue, I am not familiar with The Hunger Games. I think that is a good thing though since feedback from people who don't know the story can be just as useful as from those who do. With that, I shall begin.
I guess my biggest complaint about this level is that, after playing, I still don't know much about the story. I can tell that anyone who has read the book would probably easily recognize the characters and plot, but as an outsider, I didn't see too much characterization. There was mostly just names with dialogue. Also, there isn't too much explanation of what everything means. What is the setting? What is the lottery for? Why does the main character seem to be sacrificing herself for some other unknown person? Obviously, the lottery is not anything good, but unless it is meant to be some plot twist, it might be useful to give more information. I guess that's the point of this paragraph. It might be helpful to give background information and more character development (this is a story after all) for those of us who have no idea what is going on.
However, this level has some merit to it. I like that you incorporated some gamplay to correspond to parts of the story, breaking up some of the dialogue. Additionally, the ending was a good closing point. The level didn't just stop, it finished (if that makes sense). I would probably flesh out some enviorment detail since you already have all of your characters. For instance, when you hunting birds, it seems to be inside some kind of enclosure. The scene might grab more attention if its clear where we are.
Well, there we go. I noticed in your description that this is a level series, so maybe some of my previous questions may be answered in later levels. But still, it might be worth hooking players in with a more detailed opening. Overall, I think the level is pretty good, just needing some improvement in detail. Nice work and i hope to see more levels up.

UPDATE

I got around to finishing off yor level series and I'm glad the story came together in the end. I still am not entirely sure of the importance for some characters and plot but it now makes sense overall. I think this is a solid series.

Having no familiarity with the series, I could only play it as a stand alone level with no context...

(As in I am completely ignoring story)

It's very flat, very very flat. A line of point bubbles interspersed with some prize bubbles is not ver interesting to walk through, there are attempts at some background elements but most of it is walking oblong the flat of the stage. Having a scattering of points in the dorm room bit at the start with some bunk beds and things to swing from would have been fun a few bounce pads for pillows also would add to it.

You grab the bow, but I'm not sure what for and then die on a difficult to see electric door, a spawn point before this bit would have been nice and maybe something more complicated than a button right in front of the door. Like maybe you have to jump and swing over some electric fences and jump a gap to grab a wire that pulls out of the wall, cutting the power.

The next opportunity for some fun is the train, a bereft place for some platforming hijinx, a smoke stack, sneaking past a conductor... anything. Again as someone that has never read the books there is nothing much here to hold my attention, it may sound overly harsh, but the only time I jumped was to skip the prize bubbles as the looked like cut outs of sack people that had no relevance to me. The may be cool and exciting to people who have read the book I guess, but there is no built in thrill in getting them. You just have to walk over them, if they were in tricky places like maybe you have to jump on top of a pile of bowls to get one it would feel more rewarding.

In relation to F4F if you could take a look at my level Miserable Flying Weather (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=57390-Miserable-Flying-Weather-Back-To-The-Future) (queue me (http://lbp.me/v/yzhyj3)) it would be appreciated.
