SACK and the BEANSTALK!! by thekillermiller

Archive: 26 posts

Almost 20+ hrs, and 4 weeks in the making. I present "SACK and the BEANSTALK!!"

I just published this last night, if you do a search for "beanstalk" it'll show up.

Make sure you play the one by "thekillermiller". (I was surprised there were other beanstalk levels....most of them were lame, but they had some cool ideas and stuff I didn't think about doing.) I hope to have a vid soon if I can get someone to record me playing. Either way here are some pics, there is a ton of stuff I'm not showing here....mainly the castle and the giant. Have fun! I love this game!! Been waiting for something like this for years.

I've had great feedback so far, some even saying it's as good or better than some of the MM created levels.

Have fun! Don't forget to heart me!

Really one hit that's it? Come on people!

Here these are reply's from the IGN forums:

"That was an amazing level! The final "boss" was really cool looking! I really liked all the enemies and creatures and such too. Very good job man!"

"I just played. Man was this good. I had more fun on this than some of the dev levels. Well done on this. I'm hearting and hearting you too for the awesome job on this. The detail and ideas behind it are fantastic."

"Holy crap!"

"I just finished playing this level, and it's EASILY the best level I've played.
Seriously, that was absolutely TOP Notch!
I gave you 5 stars man. perfect!"

"That beats half the levels the developers made. Seriously amazing!"

- So give it a shot!

Well, just to let you know, the members here usually look for the more active members' levels. Be more active, and more people will start to notice you.

By the way, I played it last night, well techinically, it would be this morning, since it was like, 1:30 AM. XD I'll be working on giving you detailed feedback/suggestions.

It's not personal, mate, I promise; the members here just give preference to active users because we get a lot of people who drop by, advertise, and leave. However, this still looks really good; I'm off to play right now, and I'll let you know what I thought. 2009-01-01 00:15:00

That honestly looks awesome. I love the art style.
I'll try it out after I get home from the gym.

It was really good. Some parts could use some polish, such as the more rocky areas, but overall it was really good. Also, use creature navigators! Your creatures liked to bump into walls and flip over. If you use creature navigators, you can avoid that. Also, fix the camera in the boss fight; make it more like the skulldozer's camera so you can see Sackboy. Flesh it out too; running and jumping over electrified glass gets a little tedious. Just mix it up.

The visual style was fantastic; very good job, and I'd love to see more from you.

Creature navigators:

Good call mate! I didn't know what those did. Guess that is what you get when you start building something without reading the directions. I was so excited to finally be able to create something I whizzed by the tutorials and maybe the first 5 story levels then I started creating SACK and the BEANSTALK!

Giant Chase:

Ya, I went back and forth on this one for awhile. My Temperature gauge is full so doing any edits at this point is a real pain. The skulldozer level is just the skulldozer so they had the ability to have a lot of other things going on, yet my level is the farm, the town, the beanstalk, and the castle....so I too would love to add more than just electrified glass, but I just don't have the room unless I cut something somewhere else...I'll see if there is anything I can do. I'll also try a different camera angle on this, but I didn't want people running into the electrified glass without them being able to anticipate it's there. The angle I chose was to help aid the player in anticipating what was in front of them.

Thanks for the feedback though. Appreciate it.

This was really some of the best work I've ever seen from a first level. It was cute and not difficult but there's nothing wrong with that. Really good job.2009-01-02 03:41:00

Very epic level! It felt like quite an adventure, going from the grassy lands, up the beanstalk, and then in to the giants castle. I loved the style of the level and the many creatures you created. They all worked very well together. The puzzles where pretty clever and humorously fit with the style of the level. Although, during the bean puzzle, I couldn't help but think that it would have been awesome to actually "plant" the beans and have the beanstalk "grow". However, that would probably take quite a bit of work to implement and you're about to overheat. Anyway, the level doesn't really need it, the thought just crossed my mind.

My only criticisms are those that Confused Cartman identified. Now that you know about creature navigators, throw them in there and I would also recommend changing up the camera during the chase. I understand your motive for it's current placement, but I think you might be able to find a compromise, where the player can anticipate what is coming up, and has a good angle to jump with.

OVerall, I really enjoyed your level and look forward to more from you in the future!

I played this late last night and have to say the level design if fantastic, I like how you created everything yourself especially the creatures, and overall it felt like one solid adventure, one minor thing though, i didnt think the electric bits fitted the theme of the level when your running from the boss, maybe a few obstacles matching the theme? nothing major though. So I messed around with the creature navigators last night....but in the end it ended up causing some of my creatures to get stuck where I didn't want them to. What am I missing how you supposed to use these things? Guess I'll have to go back and see if there is a tutorial somewhere.

For creatures that you want to move left and right, place a navigator on the level, then the creature, and then another navigator. So if a period represented a navigator it would look like this:

. <-- creature moves between the two navigators --> .

I can't believe this is your first published level. The look and feel fits in well with the LBP universe. The only thing that you might need to change is the electricity bits, maybe use fire or bits of rock with spikes instead. I can't wait till you release more levels.

You can check out my level The Underground Temple of Gold (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6969) if you want. Good job.

Well just to start...I don't give IGN much cred when it comes to judging good levels. 3/4 of the levels they deem great on the site are easily surpassed by many of the levels the creators at lbpc have dreamed up.

However, yours was a nice exception Here are my thoughts:

Pros

- Your detailed work on the enemies and especially the beanstalk were phenomenal.

- I liked how you implemented the fairy tale into the level, even if it was roughly done. It's personally one of my favorite olde children's tales and I was pleasantly surprised to see it done really well

- Loved the boss, as easy as he was. It was like an easy skulldozer, but much funnier

- You were extremely efficient with your shapes and materials that you were able to create a monster of a level that was pleasing to the eye. Great job!

Cons

-Extremely easy. I think I died maybe twice throughout the entire level on my first play.

-It was a little too MMish if you know what I mean. I think this follows under the category of "easy", which I mentioned above. But this would account for your large heart/play ratio, because it's extremely user friendly (which of course isn't a bad thing).

- There really isn't any replayability. No secrets, tricks, ect. to keep people coming back for more. Once again this accounts for your great heart/play ratio, and once again it's not really a bad thing either

SO, what I'm trying to say is your going to see a lot of success with this level because of the playability and the fun attitude your level brings (if that makes sense?) haha. I gave it 5 stars and a heart and I'm excited to see what you pump out next Great work

^^ So you found the troll pickup the first time through then? Huh, thought I hid that one pretty good.

Ya, I here ya with the "cons". SACK and the BEANSTALK was really just a good test the waters level. I wanted to do something basic till I got to grips with all of the tools. Still haven't cracked a lot of em wide open to see what I could do...I wanted to keep the difficulty in the mid range as it was something I wanted my daughter to be able to finish. She's 5 and she still has trouble with parts of it.

Thanks for all the feedback, rarely do people take the time to do so. I'll have to check out Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.....sounds fun.

Your level is quite fun. And though it might be easy enough for your 5-yr-old, it will certainly be a challenge when I play it together with several of my friends. We always seem to make levels much more difficult when we play in a group =) But that being said, it will be great fun to play in a group. Many other levels are not very suitable for group play.

I have trouble with the second set of clouds. Somehow I can't make it across until the little cloud is swaying back and forth from my previous attempts to cross.

The troll object was in plain view the first time I went through, and I had no idea how to get it. The second time I figured it out. Well done. So is the windmill! But on tiny nitpick there ... the sponge block on the sponge ground makes me nuts because I always end up grabbing the ground instead of the block.

You created a great every-man's level here. It's very long, and has a simple polish to it. I like all the custom stuff in it, the progressive challenge, and the vibrant look of everything. The little bit of dialogue there is, is very funny to me. You have some things that have been done before, but you've implemented them in a unique way - like moving into the background to avoid the electrified pillars, the swinging spiders (nice look), and the two cow door, and the color coded magic bean password. Your drawbridge was awesome too...

My favorite part, was really creative - the part where you pull carts to arrange them as platforms - I haven't seen that before, and it was pretty innovative.

...the look and design of the green giants is perfect. I like their spiked knuckles, and their mishapen cartoonish, but organized detailed look.

This really came off to me like a super fun, Garden 1.1 level... that raw, entertaining "day one" LBP level, and it's something I haven't seen for awhile. This is something I'd have fun running through with 4 people like Garden and World of Color. There's just something about green sponge that's always inviting and fun when it's put on the garden background.

Minor points -

make the stickers bigger on the magic beans, you can still see some brown underneath

the lower cow flipped over the 1st time, and I had to restart

a handful of points in the ground/beanstalk area have jumps that are higher than the natural jump height for sackboy, but they're not meant to be impassable. It slows down the run and hop fun in the level. Can't point them out exactly, but if they were a smidge lower, or smaller square shapes the whole thing would be more fluid.

Nice.

Okey dokey. I played it.

I said earlier that the art design was top-notch, and I stand by it after playing. The characters and creatures are well crafted-- especially the giant himself. There's plenty of variety in jumping, puzzles like the simple put colored object into same colored place but also stuff like shoving cows until switches, and there's a lot of scenery covered in such a small space.

There were some bothersome parts though. The camera when jumping on the beanstalk is a bit annoying. It doesn't make the area harder, but it was just obnoxious having it so far away and angled like that. It was also weird when after taking down the first troll creature. It'll stay where you can't see where you need to jump until the last split-second.

Coincidentally enough, the part right after that is that of the clouds. I didn't like jumping on the clouds. With the severely rounded edges, it makes it hard to jump off of them. I'd sometimes slide right off even after pressing jump.

Overall, I really enjoyed this level. Incredible charm, lots of fun, and plenty of variety. Though I personally do think it's chintzy when creators put "heart me" in their levels.

I just played this through, it was awesome! All the custom objects were great and the overall design of the level was beautiful and funny. I can't think of much to improve to be honest, but here are a few things that bugged me just a teeny bit:

The enemies jump at walls and such occasionally, nothing catastrophic but it's something you could improve. A more important thing in my opinion is with the giant chase. When the giant chased me I had to stop and wait at moments so my character was in the middle of the screen, it was kindof annoying because if you were too fast your character was on the right edge of the screen and you couldn't see the upcoming obstacles. A bit of tweaking with the player tracking should fix this? (not sure)
But those were just small things, overall it's in the top 10 levels I've played. 5 stars and hearted

I guess SACK and the BEANSTALK was just featured during X-Play on G4. Anyone happen to see it, what'd they say? Or even better is this broadcast on the net anywhere?

(My second level update.....bout 50% complete and I have all weekend to work on it. You guys are gonna freak!)

I can't believe this thread has got so little replies.

This is a sweet level - honestly... The platforming was so polished it made me want to do... stuff. Keep the good work up man, you're a very talented creator.
